I have one amazing story - please add your own:


One of my friends had a golden retriever which had a litter of 8 puppies.

He also had a female neutered cat  which somehow shared in the duties of looking after the puppies.
The cat would sleep with the puppies in the wicker basket
& help to keep them warm & protected.

When we tried to take the dog for a short 200 meter walk she
wouldn't leave her puppies unless the cat was in the wicker basket with her puppies!

We'd have to find the cat & put it in the basket with the puppies first &
then & only then would the dog go for a little walk.

How the hell could the dog work out that the cat was going to protect her puppies in her absence?

There's Cleopatra my neighbour's cat who lives across the road from us. She loves me heaps. So does her owner (well that's what my hubby reckons but that's another story lol).

Then there's Bella, my next door neighbour's groodle. I like Bella. She's a cutie. She loves supervising me when I mow the lawns.

And she loves it when I turn on the hose afterwards....to clean everything up.

We run around with the kids all chasing the water coming from everywhere.

It really amounts to awesome fun for everyone. Bella's tongue hangs out and her tail wags furiously. The kids tell her to sit, she sits. The kids then tell her to shake hands and she lifts up one paw.

Sure, let me tell you my story.

One afternoon about a month ago I found a young, beat up looking blue chested Parakeet sitting on the deck next to our Pool. As I walked up to him I expected him to fly away but he allowed me to pick him up. His tail only had one long feather that was broken in two places. Now if I were like another who posts here I would have pulled his head off and saved myself time and money! Never in my life have I ever had a desire to have birds!

We had an old bird cage and wild bird seed so he was good for the short term. In the next two weeks I bought him a bigger (25"x25"x32") cage, toys, food and an albino companion.

So now it has occurred to me that I have supplied them with free housing, free food, free entertainment, free utilities, free care.......Damnit!!! They are Democrats.

Must have been a tame one?

The cat has 20 razor sharp claws & long piercing teeth with a powerful bite.
It also seems to know how to fight:
The cat turns faster.
It gets behind the dog & drags it to the ground then bites into it's neck.
That way the dog is off it's feet - it can't run - it can't bite the cat &
it's neck is exposed for the bite.
That cat is impressive & really the dog had no chance of winning.

The cat is obviously a lot bigger than the dog. The dog didn't have a hope. Whoever videoed this was cruel by not stopping it before it started.

Cats are primitive and destructive. No matter how domesticated and well fed they are - they are all vicious hunters. At times I could throttle the one remaining cat that I'm stuck with through no fault of mine. I love our native animals and they have an abundance of food in my garden - so it's become a cat's paradise when my back is turned. Unfortunately if I didn't have this cat who is very territorial - I would have every other stray in the area coming in on the sly to hunt.

It wasn't the cats fault - the dog tried to kill it.

Our first dog had a really protective attitude of humans. One day, my neighbours were walking to the shops, when this dog came running out of the yard to attack them. These girls decided to make the dash in the other direction. My parents' yard was not fenced at the time. Our dog came running out to greet this neighbourhood menace in a way that only he knew how. The other dog took off running, and our dog was a hero for the week with our neighbours.

When introducing a new kitten to our last family dog, our dog "Sam" decided to take on the task of looking after the kitten. He basically became "daddy" for the kitten. Sam only died a few months later. However, the kitten had taken such a liking to him, that she was visibly searching for Sam for weeks after he had died. The kitten was a house-bound cat. And Sam divided his inside and outside experiences evenly. Every time the kitten spotted Sam come upstairs for a siesta, the kitten just had to announce herself to him, running over to Sam for attention.

Of course, it took "Sam" five years to work up enough respect from the other house cats we had before our kitten came along before he was treated like an equal with them. That included saving the elder cat from an attack by a younger neighbourhood cat. So, Sam was not going to make the same mistake of letting another pet hate him.

I had an amazing wolf hound cross years ago. Ben was huge, but a beautiful and gentle dog. When his friend Jo Jo the cat gave birth under a bed in a spare room - Ben came out with a kitten held delicately in his huge mouth and bought it to me - then did the same with the other 2 kittens. Jo Jo used to suckle Ben when she was a kitten and he would lie there placidly while she kneaded away, so she was quite happy to share in the mothering of her kittens with him and Ben was more than happy to help.

Am going to have to record one of our cats for posterity.  He's the most vocal cat I've ever heard and is on the cusp of actually speaking in Human.  Meanwhile, he has to be the Pavarotti of felines, the way he can project his voice.  It's monumental.  And he's close to speaking in throat-singing, the most astounding example being last Sunday evening when he topped even himself and would have been heard at least 100 metres away

He's able to meowl 'Hello', although it comes out more as 'Heerowww'.  And he has a fairly extensive vocabulary generally; certain sounds for 'food', others for 'go out?', etc. He doesn't mix his sounds up, they have remained constant over several years

Our other cat is a contender for Most Beautiful Cat in Australia and is a back-chatter.  His noises are softer, sweeter, but if you say 'no' to him, he sounds off like a little kid and always has to have the last word as he stomps away

Our Pavarotti cat was poisoned by some filthy renters about eight months ago. It left him with only 20% kidney (or liver) function according to the vet.  He used to be a complete pig, foodwise.  Now, he is allowed to have only special, bland stuff. When we try to vary his diet by including a tiny bit of chicken or tuna, etc., he projectile vomits several times in following hours, so unfortunately for him, he's stuck with the bland stuff. Still, he's managed to almost regain his former weight and is getting pretty cocky again.  He'll be 16 soon. He's still missing his lifelong companion who died a couple of years ago at 18.  I still miss the other guy too and dream about him sometime. He was the Jesus of cats

Keep your bloody cat on your own property. Why on earth do cat owners think its ok to let their cats wander. Would you let your dog wander? Any cat on  my property is fair game.

It's time they grew up.

I was watching a movie last night where the opening scenes showed a father taking his teenaged son into the woods with a gun. A deer comes into view, nibbling the grass and being utterly inoffensive to anything alive or dead ... and then, under the direction of the father, the kid shoots the deer stone cold dead.

What then follows is the father mussing the kid's hair and telling him how 'proud' he is of his son, and that he loves him, and how he's some sort of an American Hero in his father's eyes.

Amazing stuff. Truly amazing. Not a thought for the poor deer that one moment was a beautiful creature of nature grazing in a quiet and beautifully forested landscape ... and then the next moment a hot, steel slug tears into its flesh and reduces it to a collapsed heap of dead meat with blood trickling out of its nostrils.

Amazing stuff. Truly amazing. Not a thought for the poor deer that one moment was a beautiful creature of nature grazing in a quiet and beautifully forested landscape ... and then the next moment a hot, steel slug tears into its flesh and reduces it to a collapsed heap of dead meat with blood trickling out of its nostrils. Killing for pleasure or ritual makes you feel sick. It can only nurture bloodlust. I might have seen the same movie Herbert. Didn't the son become a serial killer and hunted and stalked women the way he would a deer?

I read an article by a "bird enthusiast" who killed a presumed extinct bird so he could photograph it just to prove that it still existed. As this rare bird existed - then it possibly had a mate.

As a one-time woodland idiot myself who shot a kangaroo and a pig, I can vouch for the fact that the motivation for doing these things is that you risk nothing of your own safety whilst through the remote means of a bullet from a gun you deprive the life of innocent creatures.

Take a camera with you and leave the gun or bow-and-arrows at home.

Grow up. It doesn't matter how many animals in the woods you slaughter, you'll always be a small-penis man until you wake up to where you really fit into the scheme of things with regard to your personal importance. The graveyards are full of human beings who once thought themselves above it all because they could exercise life and death over defenseless animals of the fields and woods. A friend of mine is getting her dog put down next month. She figures that her dog is too sick to be having a good quality of life for the next few years. At 13 years of age, the dog is passed her good years. I was around last week, and the dog was as happy and energetic as ever to see me. I figure that my friend will have several thoughts about euthanising the pet and companion she has had for over a decade.

It's a hard decision, but most people don't make it lightly. The dog might have moments of energy, but most of the time it could be seriously arthritic or have some other ailment causing it considerable pain. Animals hide their pain for a long time before we see it.

What is worse than euthanising a pet who the owner believes is suffering are those people who won't let go of their pet and leave it in debilitating pain until it dies naturally. I've seen some horrible sights. These people can't let go and put their own feelings before that of the animal.

Sometimes you're not 100% sure whether you're doing the right thing. We can't ask the animal whether it's ready to go.

I've had to have several cats put down, and I can imagine that with dogs it's a lot worse emotionally. I was surprised to hear that my 'tough Aussie' neighbour across the road cried his eyes out when they had to have their 18 year old moggy put down. He's a gun-nut and won't have flowers in the garden because it's 'sissy'. And he had for years always referred to the cat in negative terms in case someone thought he was a 'poof'.  ;D

Cried like a girl at the vets.  ;D He's lucky bull-queers didn't try to follow him home.

I've said it before. I've seen a bikie come out of the vet's office choking on his tears because his cat had to be put down. And a woman I knew whose boyfriend was a leathered-up bikie told me he was a big sook with the cat at home. That's another crying session in the making for some time in the future.

I will know when, but at 19 he's still doing everythingoOK according to the vet, who is a friend.
But his medication costs more than mine.

After 25 years of pet ownership I have absolutely no doubt that the veterinary industry operates as an extortionate racket that preys on pet owners' feeling of guilt and emotions. I've been suckered many times over the years, but I'm getting better at avoiding it now.

Our rescued 13-year-old tortoise-shell cat passed away in 2014. According to my father's story, the cat came into the dining room, where dad was reading the paper, and meowed a few times. Dad asked what was up. The cat wobbled a few times, fell over, and died. Dad did not mention this, but I think he cried a bit.

My friend's dog is probably worse off than she really shows. I was probably around there during a time when the dog was at her best. Four or five visits to the vet in the past 4 months is a good sign that the dog is ready to be euthanized. April 3rd is the day she visits the vet for the last time.

All my cats over the years would go and lie-up during the daytime somewhere on the property where they never used to. They would start doing this weeks before any hint of disease.

They always removed themselves from the central 'den' as much as possible.

My old cats did the same Herbert. One in particular had started walking across the road when the street was quiet and lying in the sun in front of this rented house. The woman who lived there called Cat Care who told her to take it up to one of the vets in the area where he was put down immediately. He was healthy, but just old. When I got home from work that day Sukie didn't come in for dinner.  I rang all the vets first thing in the morning. but the culprit vet didn't tell me what had happened. I put up ads everywhere. An anonymous caller saw my sign, contacted me and told me what had happened.

I don't get angry often, but I was upset. The vet who did it got blasted and warned that the cat should have been held for 24 hours. Cat Care also got blasted and I think I said a few harsh things to the woman across the road. She left shortly afterwards. Cats have no rights.

Thinking about it logically a few months later - maybe he was sick, but I didn't notice. Going across the road alone was something that he didn't do, unless he came for a walk with me and the dogs. He was a big beautiful cat - scared of nothing.

You've sure had your dramas, Mantra. All very upsetting.

My all-white long-haired fluffy tom 'Pinkie' started going next door and disappearing under their house all day long a few weeks before he was diagnosed with feline AIDs from a bite.

And then my all-black female started removing herself to the Potting Shed all day long within weeks of her dying of a tumour in her sinus cavity.

I now have the experience to know when it's time to get the cats checked out at the vets before they otherwise have to endure weeks of pain and depression because I'm not reading the signs.

Two teenagers were out joy riding and not giving a damn about running over people's pets. The cat itself ran across the road to 'safety' where it coughed a few times and lay down to die. Mum had to put the cat in a box and cover the body with a blanket and wait for the owner to come home. Frickin' idiocy.

cats are not meant to be roaming wildly.

they are meant to be contained on the owners property.

I have captured 4 cats here and want to get more .

I've got three cats, and they're like little human children once you know and understand them.

They are close to being a perfect finished product of evolution just like sharks are. There's nothing more they need to evolve to be the perfect killing machines that they are.

You want to save a small percentage of Australian wildlife from feral cats.

Why???

How many people living in Australia go out of their way to see our native animals in the bush? 2%? 5%?

I agree the native wildlife that are small enough to be prey for feral cats should be protected against being killed by this introduced species of killer-predator.

We should make selling a cat illegal unless the cat is neutered. Then gradually do away with cats altogether. That then just leaves feral cats which can be shot or baited.

Great post Sprint .I love that you foster cats...they get such a raw deal from people and have done forever. We need many more people like you.

I am getting my cat this month from a cat shelter and she has had a terrible life..she has been chipped vaccinated and desexed...and loved by a carer to re socialise her after her terrible life on the street, she was found starving ( Skin and bone) with a litter of starving kittens. I am ready to spoil her rotten of course...

No one animal is the problem.. man is the the biggest problem and danger to our world.

Unfortunately terriers do kill chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits etc. It's in their DNA.

For all my whinging about cats AG, if they're cared for - they get a sense of what they're allowed to kill.

I opened the back door for the cat the other night and he rushed in with a big rat in his mouth. He's so quick. Thank God the rat was already dead. When they're alive he wants to play with them inside and they always escape.

He knows now that if he dares touch a bird or even looks at it the wrong way he'll be in trouble - so he sticks to rodents. He brings frogs and lizards inside occasionally, but holds them in his mouth gently so they're not hurt.

yes, would have been a cat.

I trapped 4 cats who were roaming around our place.
Within a week we had many birds in our backyard who were not there before.

That is so sweet...he doest want to hurt them. I really admire the skill set of a cat, even though it is the one thing they are hated for by conservationists...they are the ultimate hunter, voted the single most deadly and efficient hunter in the whole of the animal kingdom-the domestic cat.

That they might occcasionally take a native species is incidental to me.. they only really kill what they need to survive.. and you cannot hold that against any animal..they would not go into a chicken pen and maul a bird for fun..they do this to mice sometimes and rats...but they do eat it eventually.they are playful and have a macabre sense of fun sometimes..yes.

They are very friendly and will love you til the end...they are intelligent,and deserve to be looked after by intelligent pet owners who love them enough watch out for them. They have saved whole families from burning house fires, intruders etc.they will guard you/a family the same way a dog would..but a cat would never turn on the annoying toddler in the family and kill the child one day, out of the blue. like a dog often can.I dont hate dogs because of a bad few..I wish pp would do the same for cats...

But cats stray and some strays become feral.

If all cats are neutered there is no increase in the feral cat base and their numbers can be reduced and controlled (elimination of all feral cats probably impossible now.)

Cats are too small to really harm a small child or (careless parents and kids not reading the signals from the cat) imagine a cat the size of a labrador tho.

But these are big birds and cats do not hunt in packs -these are a fresh kill, all the birds have been killed at roughly the same time due to the uniform state of decay..most likely the work of men.. and I doubt even a dog come to that there are just too many if done by any animal in fact~ would only be one or two birds at most if killed by a cat or a dog ..

I have not called for extermination of all cats. Any cat must be neutered, then the number of feral cats does not get increased by strays. Gradually the domestic cat would disappear then feral cat numbers can be kept under control.

Cats are just too good at hunting.

Cats as pets are part of our inherent culture, and therefore they belong here just as much as we do.

But I agree there needs to be far stricter controls on not just cat-ownership, but very especially dog ownership. I have a dog across the road that spends most of its days chained up and whimpering pathetically all day long from Separation Anxiety. When the owners are home it's treated well and allowed to run freely in the backyard. Its downfall was that it never stopped tearing the clothing and sheets off the washing line and spreading them all over the yard.

I would also make it law that a neighbour's cat is allowed to roam onto other people's property under Universal Feline Rights clauses.  8-)

I had a Lebanese around the corner from me who boasted he threw bricks at any cat that strayed onto his property. That sort of cruel and immature attitude would be severely punished under Universal Feline Rights legislation.

Some cats definitely have 9 lives, but there are plenty of them who get trapped somewhere and aren't noticed until it's too late - if they're noticed at all.

All cats owned as pets mist be neutered.

I repeat I never, ever called for the mass extermination of pet cats but we need to reduce feral cat numbers and the way to do that is to ensure domestic pets are neutered.

Dog ownership comes with obvious problems—non stop barking and so on. Dogs are also big enough, unlike domestic cats (hate to see what a feral cat can do to a child tho) to harm children whereas cat problems are more easily hidden—and cats can escape a backyard by jumping a fence and dogs can’t. Demi was a stray and was obviously mistreated as a pup.

Dogs, wild dogs are a problem but wild dog packs are easier to see and eliminate than feral cats.

But cats, even domestic ones, eat native birds and other wildlife and I call for cat numbers to be encouraged to drop.

True fact: My cats have killed introduced species of birds to Australia by 100 to 1 natives ... hence they have been doing a valuable service in preserving the habitats of our native birds.

You're right but you don't over do things like that.
You can see if a cat is enjoying a pat.
I bet the bite was just a friendly nip - not a vicious bite that tore flesh off.

You're brave Herbert. After reaching out a couple of times to pat a stray and getting scratched - I'm very wary of cats I don't know well. Like dogs - unless you get a cat as a kitten and understand its foibles and they know yours - they are unpredictable.

I generally distance myself from cats unless I'm feeding them. They're always nice when you're doing that.

My neighbours opposite couldn't scratch their cat's belly even though it was 18 years old.

Ruffy the cat who was dumped on me as a kitten loves his stomach being rubbed. I hate doing it because it's such male behaviour. That's where it all falls apart!

My large 'Sooty', and then 'Gizmo' - both males, give me no trouble at all, but Muffin's a female and flings herself about the moment she catches the scent.

I buy the treatments online at bulk to keep costs to a minimum, and then only apply these tubes when my flea-combing the cats show an excess number of fleas. Combing them for fleas has been very successful over the years for keeping the populations down.

... comb ... comb ... comb ... then check comb against background light ... and if any movement can be seen, then pull the fur-with-flea off the comb with a moist tissue and pop it into a waiting zip-bag with all the others. Works a treat.

I've used the 'spot' treatment on my cats with very limited success. Unless you make your cats live in a shoe-box with the lid on, there'll always be fleas waiting to jump on them in the house and the garden. And then the 'spot' treatment itself is far from 100% efficient.

After many years of frustration over the flea problem I came up with a solution that uses Wet Wipes, a flea comb, a kitchen zip bag, and a bowl of cat biscuits.

Throughout the day the cats jump up on the desk here to eat some biscuits, and that's when I run the comb through them and trap the resulting loose fur in the tissues and seal the wads in the zip-bag. After just a very few of these combings there are no more fleas showing, and the cats appear very relaxed, with no scratching.

Well said. I took in an abandoned male cat that was dumped when the owners moved house, and which showed signs of aggression as seen in the video. We were otherwise very close, but he always had a hair-trigger to suddenly pounce and bite me. With no children in the home I kept him. Died of Feline AIDs after a brawl with a stray ginger cat that eventually got run over by a truck.

I used to have a cat that brought home pieces of pizza rather than mice or birds. I would find them under the lounge and behind the toilet etc. One day (it had been going on for months) i met a neighbor who told me about how he and his family would go out the back veranda to eat pizza and a cat would run past snagging a piece. Every time.

One time i saw him do it to a mate who was eating a blueberry muffin and waving it around while he talked. The cat ran past him and snagged the muffin and took it under the bed.

  cats can get along with dogs and are very gentle and playful-  dogs are bigger aggressive and annoying to most cats and cats go into fight mode to protect themselves   ( habit)- but lovely to see them let their guard down sometimes

Cats use that strong middle claw on their front paws for grip. They have amazing athletic skills.  It makes you feel sorry for those cats who are declawed which is cruel. It leaves them very vulnerable and physically disabled.

well it happened - my Tom got to my female - so its  trip to the vet for her and soon- it was a very loud and painful experience from what I heard- it was my fault-but the time has come-

I made the mistake many years ago of not desexing a young Tom until he was about ten months old. He started fighting with other cats and getting abscesses. Once he was desexed - he became a peaceful house cat.

I would have thought the shelter you bought the cats from AG would have desexed the cats before you took them home.

It's a pity you didn't get him done when he was younger as

no not a natural pairing is it- I always think that the cat is smart and would not dare touch the rat whilst  the owner is there so close- for the same reason I hate dogs with small children and babies- makes me shudder
