I think the Government's stance on taxation benefits for various benefits being reliant on vaccination is a good thing. But, disturbingly, there are going to be parents who will forsake those benefits and not vaccinate. Probably not a lot, but at a local meeting last night, I spoke with two couples who were quite adamant that they will forgo any financial benefits to keep their children free of (their opinion) dangerous vaccines. Strangely, they agreed with the local school policy of vehemently discouraging anything with peanuts coming to school in kid's lunches because Miss P has a peanut allergy! Not surprisingly, they did not agree that their non vaccinated children were a risk - as long as Miss P was not exposed to anything peanuts at school.
So, the removal of financial benefits is a wet lettuce leaf slap to many parents - should vaccination be compulsory? Unless of course medical opinion deems the risk to the child too high? |

It's no longer a decision I have to worry about, as all my kids/step-kids are well
and truly grown themselves now (I even have a step-grandson... :) ). But when we did have to decide, we both opted for the needle. None of the kids ever suffered from any major side-effects, none had autism, ADHD or any other developmental issues. And none ever caught the diseases they'd been vaxed against, although some of their un-vaxed friends did. Regarding the current debate, I was initially inclined to agree that making it virtually mandatory to vax was a good idea, although I opposed the proposed penalties for non-compliance and the implication that only welfare recips don't vax. But I have changed my mind. I now believe encouragement and education to be the way to tackle this issue, not mandating and penalising. On a lighter note: Back in 1997 I took my step-daughter Becka to the doc for her booster shots as she was about to start school. As you can imagine, she was a bit apprehensive about the affair so, to help her to realise that there was nothing to be afraid of, and as I was overdue for one anyway, I had a quick word with the doc, and rolled up my sleeve for a tetanus booster. And of course, it hurt like Hell. 'See, darling, there's nothing to... F^%K!!!... ..be scared of'. Here's me trying to smile and reassure her, and all the while it feels like I've just had my whole arm amputated... It worked though, she had hers without a murmur ('and it didn't hurt at all, Daddy, only a little'). Ya gotta love 'em! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |

currently society locks up those that are a danger to society such as criminals, mentally ill etc, why don't we just lock up kids that aren't vaccinated because of the danger they pose to the rest of society? Is this solution any better for you? |

I also think the Government's stance on taxation benefits or various benefits being reliant on vaccination is a great idea, but it should also be combined with unvaccinated children not being permitted to attend school until all vaccinations are up to date.
If that doesn't move the nonbelievers to compliance, then couple it with a $100.00 per day penalty, per child, until they vaccinate. If that doesn't move them to cooperation & compliance, then home detention for the parent in lieu of actual imprisonment could be a next step. The last step would then be taking the children into protective custody, & then vaccinate them before returning them to their parents. Problem solved, beers for everyone (vaccinated that is). |

As a mother, I put my parenting decisions above all else. Nobody knows my son better than me, and the choices I make about how to care for him are no one’s business but my own. Never. Say what you will about me, but I’ve read the information out there and weighed every option, so I am confident in my choice to revive a debilitating illness that was long ago declared dead and let it spread like wildfire from school to school, town to town, and state to state, until it reaches every corner of the country. Leaving such a momentous decision to someone you haven’t even met and who doesn’t care about your child personally—now that’s absurd! Maybe I choose to bring back the mumps. Or maybe it’s diphtheria. Or maybe it’s some other potentially fatal disease that can easily pass among those too young or too medically unfit to be vaccinated themselves. But whichever highly communicable and formerly wiped-out disease that I opt to resurrect with a vengeance, it is a highly personal decision that only I and my family have the liberty to make. The bottom line is that I’m this child’s mother, and I know what’s best. End of story. Politicians, pharmaceutical companies—they don’t know the specific circumstances that made me decide to breathe new life into a viral infection that scientists and the nation at large celebrated stamping out roughly a century ago. It seems like all they care about is following unexamined old rules, injecting chemicals into our kids, preventing ghastly illnesses that used to ravage millions and have since been erased from storming back and wreaking mass havoc on a national scale, and making a buck. Should we really be listening to them and not our own hearts? I am by no means telling mothers and fathers out there what to do; I’m simply standing up for every parent’s right to make his or her own decision. You may choose to follow the government-recommended immunization schedule for your child, and that’s your decision as a parent. And I might choose to unleash rubella on thousands upon thousands of helpless people, and that’s my decision as a parent. It’s simple: You don’t tell me how to raise my kids to avoid reviving a horrific illness that hasn’t been seen on our shores since our grandparents were children, and I won’t tell you how to raise yours. Look, I’ve done the research on these issues, I’ve read the statistics, and I’ve carefully considered the costs and benefits, and there’s simply no question in my mind that inciting a nationwide health emergency by unleashing a disease that can kill 20 percent or more of its victims is the right one for my child. I don't think the measures they're introducing are unfair, it's a bit of give and take and I don't think will make much difference one way or the other. But I will strongly oppose any attempt to make it compulsory, and anybody who values themselves will too.

I think that for the greater good of all the Australian people, if people need to be vaccinated from disease, then the government, who is required and obligated to protect the people, must do what it reasonably needs to do in order to protect all the people under it's protection. Vaccination is both proven and reasonable.

No one is completely safe from infection, but vaccination can mean the difference of getting a full blown case of say measles, which may be deadly, a very mild case, or not getting it at all. On the other hand some unvaccinated people can be faced with the virus, but not get the infection. Those that are unvaccinated become unaware carriers of the virus, that can pass it on to those more susceptible to infection, whether vaccinated or not. The only way that viruses can become virtually eradicated is by breaking the chain of communicability through mass inoculations. By the way, the virus is still out there lurking, looking for a host, but as long as there isn't a chain of communicability easily available, it won't spread and will eventually seem to "die out". Vaccination is the key to stem the spread, & keep the ever living virus at bay. There is no other proven way. Get vaccinated, & hoist a beer to those who worked hard day and night for us to have these wonderful vaccinations, allowing us to live almost free of deadly disease. :) |

As a result of the long period since there had been any cases of the disease, Spain had no stocks of the diptheria antitoxin and had to get some delivered from Russia. While highly effective in children, the immunity conferred by the diphtheria vaccine wears off with age, and adults who have not had a booster shot are often vulnerable to the disease. Diphtheria is often less fatal in adults than children but it can kill at any age. Prior to the introduction of vaccines, diphtheria was widespread in Spain with multiple epidemics over a period of centuries. The disease was so common and the symptoms so severe, that 1613 was known as “The Year of Strangulations”. Besides lying about the risks of vaccination, the anti-vaccine movement has routinely diminished the seriousness of the diseases reduced or eliminated by injections. Enough is enough. it's time to stop being polite about people who oppose vaccination. Raven is sick of hearing politicians give parents the right to be ‘conscientious objectors’ to vaccines. Sick of the myths about vaccination, such as causing autism.

Yes they can for several reasons. 1. Young children might not be immunised. Vaccination is the administration of the vaccine, immunisation is the formation of an immune response. So in the first instances, children get the vaccine, but don't fully form the protective immune response, thus they rely on herd immunity to protect them. This is why children get multiple doses of some vaccines spread out over years. 2. Some children have allergic responses to vaccines, thus meaning they can't be vaccinated, they again rely on herd immunity to protect them. |

If you told the same parents you were going to inject the kid with free recreational drugs or alcohol they probably would have been the first in line.. |

Many points here..... I've had the two shots... no side effects... but it remains a matter of concern to me that there seems to be a campaign that says the only chance of survival is having the shots.
WHY? I suspect that the two shots I've had are nothing but a test bed for any possibility that they may actually work. How would I know living in a quiet area where everyone keeps to themselves....?? At 72, and having SEVERE cardiac artery issues at 51 - I am way beyond my time..... no symptoms or signs yet......... |

I say yes. A vaccination isn't a drug in the normal sense of the word. Did we all object when Polio was eradiated through vaccinations. I am pleased I was of an age to dodge that bullet. It is for the benefit of the population as a whole. The numbers and benefits stack up verses the death rate in the population if we didn't mass vaccinate. I think not vaccinating is a selfish act and the anti-Vax propaganda is all BS. I have had 2 different vaccines. 2 doses of the Chinese vaccine. (No ill effects) 2 doses of Pfizer. (Nothing but a sore arm for a few days) Here in the UAE the numbers of new cases has dropped dramatically and we are all back to living nearly normal lives while still adhering to social distances and wearing masks in public. It works.i |

There's only one issue I have with docking payments for not vaccinating, and that's the system is hard to correct when they make a mistake.
We got Govt letters for both our kids advising they had missing vaccinations, and two for our youngest, all of course they'd had and were in the 'blue book'. I thought the medical centre may not have done their bit, but they had and it took hours on the phone and visits to the medical centre and medicare to sort out. One was the result of a vaccine batch number not entered correctly! Apparently we had some payments docked which I don't care about but I had to get it sorted for school enrolment. For a single parent working full time to sort it out would be a total headfkuc. On parent forums I've read stories where they keep trying but they just can't seem to get it sorted out. |
