AmoK DVD Shrinker shrinks DVDs up to one fifth of the original size without any noticeable quality reduction.

Due to the smaller file size the copy can be burned on a "normal" 2.5 or 4.7 DVD-R. The DVD's menus, subtitles, audio tracks etc all stay preserved. Though, if you want only the original film can be be copied/ripped.

AmoK DVD Shrinker uses an open source DLL (ShrinkTO5), which offers excellent quality with high speed. The GUI is easy to use but offers all necessary options. Please note: AmoK DVD Shrinker cannot burn DVDs. AmoK DVD Shrinker only shrinks the DVD and optionally creates an ISO image.

Some DVDs are protected from copying. At least in Germany it is prohibited to actively remove a copy protection. Therefore, AmoK DVD Shrinker offers no functionality to directly rip a copy protected DVD (DeCSS). On the other hand, AmoK DVD Shrinker supports the popular and freely available Machinist2.dll. replace the one MS removed. It's a top little program, and being free makes it even better. I can
wholeheartedly recommend it.

For those others of you who are (ab)using Windows 8, here's a great little tool to customise that
horrid new Start Screen in Windows 8. I use it too, and the results are very good.

It's a stand-alone program, which means nothing actually installs. Perfect for people
like Aussie.  ;) And it's only 3.3 megabytes in size.

Found this to be very good.  Cleans all the rubbish that websites leave behind and also does a great job of cleaning the registry (gives you the option of backing up the registry first)    ;)

Aussie I think you could alleviate your problems, with an up to date Anti-Virus and if you want to an anti malware programme malwarebytes free is good

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, and regularly backup my system. Haven't had a problem since I don't know when.

I use EaseUS 5.8 Workstation (the full, paid version) and I'll recommend this one, too.

Using Tweaking.com - Windows Repair:

When you first run the program you will be introduced to 4 steps before the repair options. These steps are highly recommend to do before attempting any repairs.

Step 1. Clean Your System Of Infections.
Trying to fix a system that is currently infected is obviously a very bad idea and can make things worse. An infection can hijack a machine and keep part of the repairs from running correctly. Since only part of a repair will work the
other part that failed could end up causing problems. Rule of thumb before working on a system is to make sure it is clean. Even if you think your system is clean doing a scan before hand is a good idea.

Doing a check disk on the hard drive is a good idea. This will have Windows check the file system on the drive fixing any problem it finds. Corrupt files can break a lot of things, including the repairs. So making sure the file system is good is a must.

Step 3. System File Check (SFC)
The built in Windows system file checker is a tool that checks that the Windows files are intact, the correct versions and not corrupted. This is a good idea to do before doing repairs as if a file is corrupt and we try a repair that needs that file then the repair will fail.

Step 4. System Restore & Registry Backup
Doing a system restore point is a great idea to do before doing any repairs. If any unforeseen problems happen after any repair than a system restore can put
the system back to the way it was before the repairs. This is highly recommended.

Now, here's one I heard about that you'd be mad to pass up. I nearly did, because I figured it
was too good to be true, and that the gent concerned was 'geeing me up'. Well, I went to the
site for a look-see, and Lo and behold, it was true.

So, I pounced!


Adobe CS2 Available for Free, and it's LEGAL!!!!

Apparently, so the story goes, their registration/update server died, and rather than fix it, they
simply shut it down and discontinued all support. But, incredibly, the software itself is still on
their website, and is available for FREE, LEGAL DOWNLOAD by anyone who wants it. The whole
CS2 suite is available for those who wish, or individual components like Photo-Shop can be d/l'ed
separately.

From the Adobe website: -[color=#ff6600]Adobe has disabled the activation server for CS2 products,
including Acrobat 7, because of a technical issue. These products were released more than seven
years ago, do not run on many modern operating systems, and are no longer supported.  Adobe
strongly advises against running unsupported and outdated software. The serial numbers below
should only be used by customers who legitimately purchased CS2 or Acrobat 7 and need
to maintain their current use of these products.[/color=#ff6600]

It runs just fine on Windows 8 64-bit, without needing Compatibility Mode, so you Win 7 users
shouldn't have a problem

I'd actually been using an older version (Photo-Shop 6) since 2001, but only for the odd bit of
photo-editing, but had never tried to actually create anything with it. But since getting this, I've
been teaching myself how to create my own 'sigs', Farce-book cover photos etc. it really is fun
and I've learned a hell of a lot in the few weeks I've had it.

ago, I couldn't have done these, or even known where to start.... Yes, there's a sig for OzPolitics

I have a question if anyone can help me out ....First, a bit of background. I work from home with 2 computers, computer 1 is the main PC used for work, and the other is a secondary pc that I use when the wife is busy on PC 1. Both PC's are networked. We want to get a tablet or laptop as well but that would only complicate my problem further. My email currently comes to me via Windows Livemail ....

my problem is that with livemail, If I send an email with PC 2, it does not appear in PC 1 sent mail box. Email recieved appears in both, but not sent. To get around this, I usually BCC my own email address however I would rather not do that. I was told I could get around this problem by using webmail, but I was also told that webmail only stores the email messages for a short period of time, after that they get deleted. For the purposes of the busness I need to keep all my emails long term. Does anyone have a solution?

Get your own domain and hosting. then you can use webmail and never have to worry about it being deleted by the host (unless you dont pay your bill)

An alternative would be to use some kind of synch software. I have one called bamboo but it isnt the best out there.

The advice I received seems to coincide with Spot's comment.

Ok, boys and girls, I have a real treat for you today.

This is more for those who like to get creative than those who are into customisation or
system tools. I have played with this myself, with quite satisfactory results (see screenshot).
I knocked the four-page site shown up in around 1½ hours, and it is fully-functional.

Description
IE PassView is a small password management utility that reveals the passwords stored by Internet Explorer Web browser, and allows you to delete passwords that you don't need anymore. It supports all versions of Internet Explorer, from version 4.0 and up to 10.0.
For each password that is stored by Internet Explorer, the following information is displayed: Web address, Password Type (AutoComplete, Password-Protected Web Site, or FTP), Storage Location (Registry, Credentials File, or Protected Storage), and the user name/password pair. You can select one or more items from the passwords list and export them into text/html/csv/xml file.

Using IE PassView
IE PassView doesn't require any installation process or additional DLLs. In order to start using it, just copy the executable file (iepv.exe) to any folder like, and run it. After running iepv.exe, IE PassView scans all Internet Explorer passwords in your system, and display them on the main window.

Types Of Passwords
IE PassView utility can recover 3 types of passwords:

• AutoComplete Passwords: When you enter a Web page that contains a form with user/password fields and a login button, Internet Explorer may ask you if you want to save the password, after pressing the login button. If you choose to save the password, the password is saved as AutoComplete password.
  Be aware that some Web sites (like Yahoo login page) deliberately disable the AutoComplete feature, in order to avoid password stealing by other users.
  
• HTTP Authentication Passwords: Some Web sites allow the user to enter only after typing user and password in a separated dialog-box. If you choose to save the password in this login dialog-box, the password is saved as HTTP authentication password.
  
• FTP Passwords: Simply the passwords of FTP addresses (ftp://...)
  
  Password Storage Locations
  Internet Explorer stores the passwords in different locations, depending on the version of IE, and the type of the password:
  
• Protected Storage: The 'Protected Storage' is a special secret location in the Registry that was used to store all the passwords of Internet Explorer in versions 4.0 - 6.0
  The Registry location of the Protected Storage was HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider. Starting from version 7.0 of Internet Explorer, the Protected Storage is no longer used for storing passwords.
  
• Registry (Storage2 Key): Starting from version 7.0 of IE, all AutoComplete passwords are stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\Storage2 Registry key. The passwords are encrypted with a key created from the Web site address, so it's not possible to get the password without knowing the Web site address.
  
• Credentials File: Starting from version 7.0 of IE, HTTP authentication passwords are saved in the Credentials file of Windows, together with other network/login passwords. The Credentials file is located in the following locations: ◦Windows XP/2003: [Windows Profile]\Application Data\Microsoft\Credentials\[User SID]\Credentials and [Windows Profile]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Credentials\[User SID]\Credentials

Many years ago I downloaded a little program, initially it was a Desk Accessory but as the MacOS developed I could extract the program from the DA file.

It was called McSink, as in everything bar the kitchen sink, later sold commercially as Vantage which I bought. It was a little program for cleaning up text. You could turn all uppercase text into all lowecase or capitalise words or sentences. Its find and replace was good and included control characters like tabs and carriage returns. Strip control characters got rid of garbage characters. Comma delimited text could be converted to tab delimited text and you could copy a “column” paste that into a fresh worksheet, process it then paste it back into the same or a different position in the original worksheet.

Was designed for graphic designers, letting them clean text up before adding them to a book or brochure, etc.

I used it to prepare untidy text files before importing it into my database program. Not an Intel program so have to run it on legacy systems so doubt I will ever use it again. This program ran faultlessly from OS3 to OS 9.

A freeby little game I also downloaded also worked on a range of OSs but under OS9 I had to stop just before the final winning move or the game would crash.

I've been beta-testing for MS and others for a few years now.

It started when I had to write an installation and setup booklet for the Vista preview while doing one of my computer courses.

Well, I couldn't write accurate instructions if I hadn't actually installed it myself, could I?

And it went from there.

Anyway, I'm using the 8.1 beta now, and it looks pretty good, but is buggy, as you'd expect.

I tried TClockEX ~ but it was loaded with viruses.

Also can't find a Spamfilter for my email client (Thunderbird). Not even my expensive TRENDmicro anti-virus app's anti-spam function works with Thunderbird.

Tried to install Windows Live Mail ... wouldn't install ~ twice failed.

I'll be setting this Windows 7 up to be as optimal as I can get it, and then I'll be returning to Windows XP on my other PC with this Win7 crap only as a backup on rare occasions.

Another week of road testing this Windows 7 jalope and I'll be back at the helm of my Good Ol' reliable Windows XP again.

Every app I ever downloaded would immediately install and work beautifully with Windows XP.

Win7 ... the 'Paint' is crap. No digital clock. No spamfighter in the email client. Half my Startup software doesn't startup despite me ticking the boxes. The Control Panel format is shyte compared to WinXP.

I'm toying with the idea of using my Win7 PC as a speed bump outside my place. Slow the hoons down around here. 

Or maybe use it as a lobster trap next time I go fishing. 

I'm not complaining, mind you.  8-)

The Trendmicro anti-virus people keep emailing me to say I haven't installed my latest purchase from them. But I have, I've checked a dozen times.

The reason it's not there is that it comes standard with Linux Mint. You don't need antivirus programs with Linux either.

I have Windows XP in my Virtual-box. The only thing I use it for is "Basecamp" for my GPS. It always strikes me as strange that you pay for Windows yet can't customise it very easily. I prefer Cinnamon to Mate any day, and I'm warming to Nemo as a File Explorer in  Mint 15, although I swapped it for Nautilus in Mint 14. 

Couldn't for the life of me work out why I was getting advertisement overload. I'd forgotten to reinstall "adblock".  If you use Firefox or another mozilla based browser, it's a free add-on.

It's easy. I have it working now on Firefox. No ads on this forum for example.

If you want to carry out basic edits of images, GIMP is much better than Irfanview, and there is even a Windows version.

Maybe we're talking about different things. Adblock is an Add-on for the Firefox Browser. All you do is open the Firefox browser, go to tools, add ons and search for Adblock. Install it and no more ads. There are no instructions as far as I know.

A little bit of help

the wife has a heap of music on her computer in wma format and she wants to put some of them on her phone.

She has a 8mb memory card in it and I try to put some 4 songs on to her phone and it ran out of space.

what is a good easy program so she can transfer the music from wma format to mp3 format she is not too good on workings of a computer, so something nice and easy would be good for her

Yes. I got my wife a computer with Windows 8. It's like KDE Plasma on Valium and the splash screen is appalling.

When I installed it, it wouldn't do anything without a Windows account (Live or something) - and it has these inane coloured boxes for email etc.  The email itself would not work without a Live account, so I installed Mozilla Thunderbird, which has no such nonsensical requirements.  I was tempted to wipe the lot and install Linux.

To access the hard drive, you have to click on a small chevron on the task bar.  Why do people pay for this garbage?

She just told me that the printer stopped working, so I did the usual trick of restarting the computer and the printer. It wasted 15 minutes of my time updating Windows before it had even loaded and then it kept shutting down after each cycle of updates.

At least with Linux, you can update while you're doing something else, and restarting takes 60 seconds at the most. 

The best place for Windows Internet Explorer is inside a Virtual box.

Thanks for the tip. It just made me angry.  Win 7 was ok. I only touch that computer when I have to.

The thing that annoyed (and amused) me most was that the native email application required a Windows log in (or was it Live?) before you could do anything. That is so Apple Mac. There is no native pdf support either. You have to install Adobe or something, and the Adobe updates are so invasive. It's insane that you can't just install Windows and then just click on a pdf file to open it.

I remember Unlocker. Do you still need that? Pity you can't just kill the process like you can in Linux. It's weird that you need a non-native app to do something so basic. Very shoddy. 

In summary, Windoze has double the install size with 1/5 of the useful features and a whole lot of time wasting security crap installed on your computer to protect their precious proprietary operating system from piracy (heaven forbid).

It is different, and there is a learning-curve.

But it doesn't look or work much differently to Win 7 if Classic
Shell is installed (as shown in this pic of my Win 8 desktop).

And no, it doesn't 'suck' provided you do tweak it somewhat.

I have heard nothing but complaints about Win8.

I think Win7 is the best thing since sliced bread

Can you think of any audio software out there that you can download (for free, hopefully), where you can view the different streams individually? Like if you hear a conversation, and you want to listen to one specific person talk without the background and foreground murmuring, and you can just shut off the streams irrelevant to listen to one specific stream of audio? Thanks in advance.

World Sacred, sorry for the delay, had a couple of days away. I can't think of anything that will actually work while you are streaming.

However once you have an actual video, Audio Extractor can extract audio/sound or background music from videos.

You are correct to be worried, the internet is a playground for confindence tricksters. Don't ever install anything unless you know exactly what it's for and what you are going to be doing with it. Most download sites are fakes, providing modified versions of software bundled with various malware and virus type programs.

Even with the more reputable vendors, you will have to learn to sort the wheat from the chaff, as they often come bundled with toolbars and bloatware that modify the user interface to trick you into installing them even when you think you are opting out. Unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, NEVER install ANYTHING onto your computer, it's not worth the hassles. Wait for someone who KNOWS and not just someone who will casually say 'oh it's okay I've been doing it and I've had no real problems'.

Certainly never install any programs that profess to 'clean your registry', you will only do irrepairable damage and have to reinstall everything. Get a free anti-virus like Avast or Windows Defender and use it in conjunction with Windows Firewall. Revo Uninstaller is a good tool for removing any accidentally installed stuff. For a Browser I'd suggest Firefox with a few basic add-ons like Noscript. Every major application as a popular free version, do a bit of research and download them from the publishers website, not some 3rd part file or torrent host.

As you may be aware when Windows downloads updates they are left stored on your hard drive in the Winsxs directory taking up lots of space.
This explains it

The WinSxS directory is a large consumer of disk space on Windows Clients and Servers. Over time, the WinSxS directory steadily increases in size.     So why is this?     One cause of this is Windows Updates. To allow the ability to uninstall an update, all the previously installed versions of Windows Updates are kept in WinSxS directory even when they become superseded by an update released in future. This accounts for Windows updates taking a lot of space and it continues to grow significantly as more and more updates are installed.     So how do we cleanup the WinSxS directory? Well, with each service pack released, we also give the option of performing a cleanup that removes all previous versions of the files updated by the service pack. However, service pack 1 released well over 2 years ago, and there has not been another service pack since. Think about all those files updated by security updates and hotfixes?  Up until today, we have not had the ability to cleanup these files.

FBackup has a simple interface and guides you through the process of defining a backup job using a friendly wizard that asks you:
1/.Where do you want to store the backup (the destination).
2/.What do you want to backup (the sources).
3/.How do you want to run the backup (using full backup that zips the files, or

mirror backup that doesn't zip them).
4/.When do you want to run the backup (you can schedule it to run automatically or run it manually).

Once a backup job is defined, you can run it manually by pressing the Backup button (or F6), or if you add a scheduler it will run automatically. FBackup can easily back up sources from local drives (including USB connected drives) to destinations such as USB/Firewire connected devices or mapped network locations. It creates either standard zip files (when using "full backup"), or exact copies of the original sources without any compression (using "mirror backup"). The best thing about this freeware backup software is that it protects your data for free.

Automatic backups
You define a backup job, set it to run automatically, and forget about it. FBackup will automatically run the backup at the scheduled date, so you have the benefits not only of having your data protected, but you'll also save precious time.

Backup with standard zip compression
When using "full backup", the sources will be archived using standard zip compression. FBackup uses ZIP64 compression, which means that it can create zip files over 2GB in size. Also, you can password protect your backup zip files.

Multiple backup destinations

This way, if your computer suffers a hardware failure, you'll have your data safe on an external location.

Backup plugins
You can load plugins for backing up or restoring specific program settings or other custom data (like game saves, email data, etc.). Once loaded in FBackup, these plugins will list the sources needed to be backed up for that particular program in "Predefined Backups." Backup open files
If a file is in use by another program at the time of the backup, FBackup will still be able to back up that file, because it uses the Volume Shadow Service that Windows provides. So, as long as you're using Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2008/2003 Server (32/64-bit), FBackup will back up those open files. As an example, you will be able to back up your Outlook emails and settings without closing the program first.

FBackup is a free data backup software, it is not recommended for full system backup (disk image backups).
