Title: AN unusual play on things!
Post by lisa.greek on May 23rd, 2012 at 2:55pm
Tony Abbott has made much ado lately about tainted votes in Parliament. Let’s examine just how many tainted votes each side actually has.

By The Derp’s reckoning there are a total of 8 tainted votes between the House Of Representatives and The Senate.

First cab off the rank (pun intended) is of course The Speaker of The House Of Representatives, Peter Slipper. Mr Slipper is accused of rorting the Cabcharge system and of sexually harassing a staff member, James Ashby (see Slippergate Smells A Lot Like Utegate and Slippergate Update May 5 2012).

Mr Slipper is an Independent, so the score so far is:

ALP – 0
IND – 1
LNP – 0
Second tainted vote is that of Craig Thomson. Mr Thomson is accused of misappropriation of HSU members funds. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. This may actually prove to be a Liberal Party beat up (see How Jackson, Lawler and Abbott Tangled Thomson With The HSU, Comin’ Under Fire), however Tony Abbott insists this is not the case, so we’ll count Mr Thomson’s vote as being tainted.

Mr Thomson is an Independent, so the ongoing score is:

ALP – 0
IND – 2
LNP – 0
The Manager Of Opposition Business, Christopher Pyne is allegedly involved up to his eyeballs in the Slippergate affair (see I Think I Smell A Rat) which makes his vote unquestionably tainted.

Ongoing score:

ALP – 0
IND – 2
LNP – 1
Deputy Leader Of The Opposition, Julie Bishop was also in contact with Ashby before any charges were laid against Mr Slipper (see Opposition Slipper Story Slips), so her vote must also be counted as tainted.

Ongoing score:

ALP – 0
IND – 2
LNP – 2
When we think of taint, naturally one’s thoughts turn to the Member for Indi, the vile Sophie Mirabella. Mirabella is under a cloud at the moment for allegedly misappropriating funds from Alzheimer’s sufferer, the late Colin Howard QC (see Mirabella In Hot Seat Over QC Lover’s Dying Days and Sophie Mirabella under pressure to give vulnerable old man’s estate to charity). Until this matter is resolved, Mirabella’s vote is most definitely tainted.

Ongoing score:

ALP – 0
IND – 2
LNP – 3
Serial coward, hypocrite and liar, Tony Abbott’s vote must also be classed as tainted as he has a civil case against him for defamation (see Union Official Sues Abbott For Defamation). Interestingly if the plaintiff Mr John Setka wins the case, Abbott, who already has a huge mortgage outstanding, will be bankrupted. This will mean he has to leave Parliament altogether. Because of this we have to count Abbott’s vote as also being tainted.

Ongoing score:

ALP – 0
IND – 2
LNP – 4
The Derp won’t bother including Kelly O’Dwyer’s vote as being tainted for her stunt which was discussed in The Derp yesterday (Liar, Liar, Kelly O’Dwyer), nor that of the other LNP member involved in the rather pathetic stunt, Senator Eric Abetz. It hasn’t been included as this was more an act of stupidity, and if we had to count that as being tainted we would also have to include serial buffoon Joe Hockey as well. These are more tatty than tainted.

To find more tainted votes we now move to the Senate where we find none other than the hokey pokey gal, Mary Jo Fisher. Fisher was found guilty of assaulting a security guard earlier this year.

Ongoing score:

ALP – 0
IND – 2
LNP – 5
Next up is close acquaintance of Tony Abbott, Senator Bill Heffernan. Heffernan has recently been accused of a homophobic assault on a fellow Liberal Party member (see Heffernan Accused Of Homophobic Assault On Lib).

Which brings the score to:

ALP – 0
IND – 2
LNP – 6
As our voting system is boiled down to a Two Party System, we will also adjust the scores down to a final total between the two major parties.

Mr Thomson, before becoming an Independent was a member of the ALP, so his tainted vote has been allocated to the ALP.

Mr Slipper was previously a member of the LNP, so obviously his vote has to be allocated to the LNP.

This brings the final adjusted score for tainted votes to:

ALP – 1
LNP – 7Perhaps Abbott would be well advised to not push the tainted vote meme anymore as his party is seven times more tainted than the party he is trying to smear as being tainted.

An Update - same link as above:

After the original tainted vote scorecard was published by The Derp on May 21, additional scores will need to be added.

Following Craig Thomson’s historic speech in the House Of Representatives, Leader of the house, Anthony Albanese uncovered another member of Parliament with a cloud over them.

The Member for Hughes, Craig Kelly neglected to update the register of MP’s interests after the August 2010 election.

Kelly was a director of several companies associated with Sydney furniture importer DV Kelly, a company founded by his parents. ASIC records confirm that Kelly did not officially resign from these positions until March 2011.

This brings the Two Party Tainted Score to:

ALP – 1
LNP – 8
It has also been brought to The Derp’s attention that the ALP Member for Eden-Monaro also has a defamation suit against him y Liberal pollsters Lynton Crosby and Mark Textor over a tweet posted by Dr Kelly on October 1, 2011. Dr Kelly’s vote has been added to the scorecard.

The updated scorecard so far then reads:

ALP – 2
LNP – 8
NB. There are potentially two more tainted votes, both in the Senate. These are the votes of Senators Bob Carr and Barnaby Joyce. Both Senators have had complaints lodged against them by James Ashby, the plaintiff in the Slippergate affair. These have not been added as they are contingent on the success or failure of the civil case brought by Ashby against Mr Slipper.

If Asbhy’s case against Mr Slipper is vindicated, then the votes of both Senators Carr and Joyce will be added. (Carr to the ALP score, and Joyce to the LNP score).

yeah right... because failing to update a register is equivalent to stelaing $500,000 fromt eh HSU, taking secret commissions and lying to parliament.

what an idiotic post which happily ignores all misdemeanours from the ALP and treats draig Thomson as a naughty boy instead of a serial embezzler and criminal.

But you forgot some tainted ALP votes.

1. The PM who told a huge lie = tainted
2. K Rudd who visited a strip club in the states. I think strip clubs demean women. Rudd went on to become PM.
3. Joel Fitzgibbon forced to hand in his ministerial badge after it was revealed he accepting gifts from a female Chinese national. He also forgot to update his pecuniary interests but put it down to 'untidiness'.
4. The ALP MPs who decided to support the concept of 'guilty until proven innocent' legislation.

Can the Libs ever win an election on their own or will they always need the support of minor parties to beat Labor?

How many votes has Thommo cast in the last 4 years.

As for the other "tainted vote" the only person making a big deal out of it is the creator of this thread
