Title: Oz Rabbi Ignored Sex Abuse Warnings Say Parents
Post by falah on May 9th, 2012 at 10:24am
Rabbis in Australia seem to wield a lot of power over their communities - even to the point of being able to stop parents from protecting their own children in some cases.

Is a culture of ignoring rape accusations acceptable in Australia?

Rabbi ignored warnings on sexual abuse, say parents

David Cyprys leaves Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday

ONE of Australia's leading rabbis told a man whose son had been allegedly sexually abused by a youth group leader at a Melbourne Jewish school that the child would not need counselling because he was under eight years old, court documents say.

David Samuel Cyprys, a former security guard at the Yeshivah Centre in St Kilda East, has been charged with 53 offences, including six counts of rape, allegedly committed against 12 boys between 1982 and 1991...

...In court documents, the parents of two separate boys said they went to Yeshivah Centre director Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Groner in the 1980s to complain about alleged molestation.

The parents of both boys said no action was taken, with one woman saying her son was abused for another three years after her complaint.

One father said he told Rabbi Groner in 1984 that Cyprys had ''interfered'' with his son. '' He told me that [the boy] wouldn't need counselling because [he] was under eight years old,'' the man said in a statement.

''Rabbi Groner told me he had spoken to psychologists before and they had told him because the children are so young counselling would not be necessary. Since that day I never heard another word.''

The mother of another boy said she called Rabbi Groner in 1987 after being ''shocked out of my brain'' to learn of alleged abuse of her son.

''I recall when I mentioned David Cyprys' name to Rabbi Groner he replied, 'Oh, no, I thought we cured him'. By this I was sure that Rabbi Groner meant this sort of thing had happened before with David Cyprys,'' the woman said in a witness statement.

Rabbi Groner, who was Melbourne's most senior Chabad rabbi, died in 2008.

The court documents say Cyprys, who owns a locksmith business, has been affiliated with the yeshivah for many years. He was employed as a security guard, was a co-leader of a Jewish youth group there and was a martial arts instructor who recruited students from the school.

Cyprys, 44, of Balaclava, also supervised young males at the mikvah baths attached to the Yeshivah Centre, which are used for the spiritual cleansing of Jewish males.

''The accused was seen as a role model by members of the Jewish community who trusted him in the company of their children,'' the summary of charges says.

The alleged victims, who were aged between seven and 17, say they were abused by Cyprys at locations including the mikvah bath house, Elwood houses, his van, Gan Israel youth camps and Yeshivah College.

''He was known as the 'key master'. People knew this, and still do, and we were afraid of his reputation as being able to access everybody's houses and also because of his martial arts prowess,'' one alleged victim said in his statement.

''Cyprys was never shy about touching up kids. He was never violent, but you were scared, because he had the keys to everything, and he was a black belt at karate.''

Another alleged victim said Cyprys was ''a lot bigger and stronger than me at the time''. ''He had me pinned and cornered. I felt sick to my bones and wanted to die, I was so afraid.''

The man said that...''For some reason, the Jewish community in Melbourne covers things up,'' he said in his statement...

Rabbi Groner.

One could say the same about any belief, whether you recognise it as religion or not.

It is easily objectively proven that multiculturalism, or egalitarianism have neagtive effects.  These beliefs are religious in nature, because there is no proof of any benefits the beliefs deliver, nor any need for proof because the faith is strong.

So then, if "religion" is to banned, what do we do about these equally, if not more destructive ideologies?  Religion by any other name....

All you can do is present facts and hope the sacles fall from peoples eyes.  banning it doesn't do poo, and doesn't fill the need for people to explain the unexplainable.

Right but other races actually exist don't they. They are clearly not religious in nature, it is religious not support your fellow human beings.
There obviously is proof of their benefits, a key one would be people not suffering but I don't expect you to care about that.

I dont think faith should be banned but organized religion is another thing all together. If you could see it from afar you would probably want religious organizations to stop taking advantage of your beliefs.

How does lying to yourself and others fill the need?

No good saying theres "obviously proof" if you can't provide any.  It's sure not rational, or supported by anything at all to say people don't suffer under egalitarianism.  Sounds like faith to me.

Wheres the cut off point though?  When does an ideology, a belief or even a common interest get labelled "religion" for political reasons?

Making up an explanation for something that has no explanation eg. the creation of the universe, or the first sparks of life can't be called a lie unless there is a proven alternative.  Might be highly unlikely to be true, but still as valid as any other explanation.

Article 18 of the Universal declaration of human rights gives people the right to believe in religion your non solution is a clear violation of human rights.

I would call falah a hypocrite for pointing something out about the jews that muslims are also guilty of.

The arabic word for hypocrite is "munafiq".

Child brides are rampant in Saudi Arabia, the homeland of Islam, muslims will claim if you marry a child it is not pedophilia.
You could sign the petition here if you want to help with some diplomatic pressure to end this child bride stuff.

Eh in a society without religion they would just find new authority positions to abuse.

People just need to look out for this garbage on a personal level, they always strike in the shadows of a culture. Only so much you can do against slithering filth like pedos.

Strangely enough, I agree with you. They will tend to gravitate to any position of authority where they can have contact with children. That includes the priesthood as well as schools, drama groups and just about anywhere else where they have an opportunity to prey on children.

Rabbi knew of molest rumours

THE ex-principal of a Melbourne Jewish school has changed his evidence about his knowledge of alleged paedophilia and conceded he was aware in the early 2000s of rumours that a former security guard had molested children.

The former security guard at Yeshivah College, David Samuel Cyprys, is contesting 53 charges - including six counts of rape - allegedly committed against 12 boys between 1982 and 1991.

In a witness statement, former principal Rabbi Abraham Glick said he had only recently become aware of accusations against Cyprys. He also said Yeshivah Centre director Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Groner had never divulged to him the names of alleged sex abuse victims.

But under oath in the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday, Rabbi Glick said he wanted to change this statement. ''I'm making that amendment because I said Rabbi Groner never divulged the names of individuals and I am now saying that is not 100 per cent accurate,'' Rabbi Glick said.

''There were two times when he named individuals.''

He said Rabbi Groner told him in the early 2000s that either an alleged victim or his father had complained that he had been sexually abused.

Rabbi Glick, who still teaches at Yeshivah College, said he had suspected at the

time that Cyprys was the alleged molester. ''It's a small community - you can hardly sneeze without everybody knowing about it,'' he said.

''There were all sorts of rumours flying around, and I suspected at the time it was David Cyprys. Rabbi Groner may even have told me it was David Cyprys, I don't recall.''

Magistrate Luisa Bazzani asked whether the rumours had resulted in a requirement that Cyprys be supervised around children at activities such as camps and martial arts lessons, where the abuse is alleged to have occurred.

But Rabbi Glick said Cyprys had no longer been involved in these activities when the rumours were circulating. ''He was already married. I don't think he was involved in camps or anything of that sort.''

However, he said Cyprys had been a security guard at the Yeshivah Centre in St Kilda East, which includes the school, for a few years from 2000.

''I did not believe that Rabbi Groner would have allowed him to act as a security guard unless he felt that he was currently not a threat to anyone,'' Rabbi Glick said in his statement. He said that since making his statement he remembered receiving a call from Rabbi Groner shortly before his death in 2008.

''He said to me that he had been approached by a mother who advised him her child had been molested by David Cyprys. She was agitated, she was threatening to take police action. He called me to ask me if I had knowledge of that. I said I had no knowledge of that.''

Rabbi Glick said he also wanted to clarify his statement that he had no recollection of any child or parent making a complaint to him about Cyprys molesting children. In fact, he said, he had no recollection of complaints made while he was principal from 1986 to 2007, but last year a man had advised him he had been molested at a camp when he was a child.

''What I'm clarifying is that report to me was made to me last year when I was no longer principal. It wouldn't be true to say the report was never made to me,'' he said.

Meanwhile, David Kramer, a former friend of Cyprys, said in a witness statement that Cyprys had told him he was having a relationship with an alleged victim, who was aged between 11 and 14 when the alleged abuse occurred. (Mr Kramer is not the same man as the convicted paedophile and former Yeshivah College teacher of the same name, whom police are seeking to extradite from the US.)

''What he said was sickening to me but appeared normal to him. The way David approached the subject was as if he was speaking about an adult female,'' he said.

Mr Kramer said in the statement that Cyprys had told him Rabbi Groner was aware of the situation...

Chabad Rabbi Blames His School's Abuse Scandal On Homosexuality

After decades of senior Chabad rabbis covering up child sexual abuse at Chabad's flagship school in Australia, a former principal of the school says that an alleged child rapist's homosexuality could have been cured and implies that homosexuality is at the root of the abuse scandal that is rocking Melbourne's Chabad community.

Rabbi Avrohom Glick, left, with accused child rapist David Cyprys last year

MAGISTRATE Luisa Bazzani will announce on Monday whether the case against alleged rapist David Samuel Cyprys will proceed to trial.

In the Melbourne Magistrates Court last week, Rabbi Avrohom Glick, Yeshivah principal from 1986 to 2007 and presently a teacher and head of Jewish studies and student wellbeing at Yeshivah, gave evidence at a committal hearing for Cyprys, who was charged with 53 offences, including rape, against 12 boys, during his long association with the college and the Chabad community.

Before Rabbi Glick began his testimony on Monday, prosecutor Andrew Grant told the court the rabbi wanted to change a key point in a written statement he made to police late last year, in which he had stated: “Rabbi [Yitzchok Dovid] Groner never divulged to me the names of individuals that brought complaints to him.”

However, asked by Grant to set the record straight, Rabbi Glick said in court that Rabbi Groner had in fact told him Cyprys was the subject of a complaint by a parent regarding molestation.

Rabbi Glick said that in “the early 2000s”, Rabbi Groner told him of a complaint by a parent of one of the alleged victims and, although Cyprys’s name did not come up at that time, he “suspected” he was the individual Rabbi Groner was talking about.

Around that time, Rabbi Glick said he had become aware of rumours in the Yeshivah community that Cyprys was homosexual, which led him to suspect it was he the rabbi had alluded to.

But shortly before his death in 2008, Rabbi Groner had divulged Cyprys’s identity to him, Rabbi Glick told the court. “He called me and said to me that he had been approached by a mother who advised that her child had been molested by David Cyprys. She was agitated, threatening to take police action. He called me to ask if I had knowledge of that. I said I had no knowledge of that.”

Rabbi Glick said Cyprys became a youth leader and teacher and may have been involved with transporting students who attended the Gan Yisrael camps until the 1990s. As a security guard and locksmith who ran a security firm, Cyprys was also “subcontracted” for maintenance jobs on campus, he said. He was also a martial arts enthusiast who ran classes for boys.

Around the time the rumours started, Rabbi Glick was approached by the father of a student, urging him that Cyprys should not be employed at the college because of his sexual orientation. Rabbi Glick recalled responding to the parent that Cyprys did not work for the school and he was not his employer. Rabbi Glick added, “I told him Rabbi Groner would not permit Cyprys to work as a security guard if he was a threat to anyone.”

Asked by Bazzani if the rumours resulted in precautions being taken to protect students, Rabbi Glick said Cyprys was no longer involved with the school at that time.

Rabbi Glick had become Yeshivah principal in 1986, the year after Cyprys ended his studies at Yeshivah College and had “not very much” contact with Cyprys and “very little” contact with Jocelyn Searby, a consulting psychologist at the school, with whom Rabbi Groner had close ties.

Questioned by Cyprys’s barrister Marcus Dempsey about procedures in the 1980s to deal with young teenage students who believed they might be gay, Rabbi Glick said they were told “it was not Jewish practice” but they would not be asked to leave the school unless they were “promoting those practices”.

Rabbi Glick said he knew of no student at Yeshivah in the 1980s and 1990s who was openly gay. Asked by Dempsey: “Was homosexuality something to be cured from?”, he responded: “My understanding is that homosexuality can be cured … my understanding is that in most situations, the answer is yes.”

He said students had recourse to shluchim [mentors] to discuss these problems and could go to a religious studies teacher, to Rabbi Groner or to himself for counselling. Asked if he knew whether Cyprys had been counselled by Rabbi Groner, he said he suspected so, but Rabbi Groner “did not keep meticulous records”.

When questioned by Dempsey on Tuesday, Senior Detective Lisa Metcher  said she had found no evidence in her search of Yeshivah records that Cyprys had been counselled.

On Tuesday, the court heard police testimony about two alleged rape incidents involving one of the boys.

Detective Senior Constable Tamara Annette Cornelissen gave evidence about one of the alleged victims, who had mentioned the act of “penetration” in a police interview. Two such incidents were identified in the interview.

Cornelissen confirmed the victim’s claim in his statement that the accused “covered my mouth to stop me screaming”.

Thankfully, the AJN printed a brief opinion piece by the paper's national editor that deals with some of the problems with Glick's comments:

Quote:
    Further cause for concern
    ZEDDY LAWRENCE

    COMMENT

OVER the past two weeks, the claims and allegations that have surfaced in the Cyprys hearing have shocked the community. That such abuse may have occurred in the first place is alarming enough; that the school seems to have failed to take appropriate measures when fears were raised is equally disturbing.

But these are not the only concerns that have emerged and that will doubtless be discussed over the coming days.

One is the issue of attitudes towards homosexuality, in particular that it can somehow be “cured” as if it were an illness or abnormality. Such a claim is an affront to the gay and lesbian community, and indeed to all those who believe in equality irrespective of sexual orientation. In this day and age, that a teacher responsible for student welfare at a school could hold such a view will no doubt raise eyebrows and prompt debate about his suitability for the role.

On the subject of homosexuality, it should also be made clear that such a sexual orientation has nothing to do with paedophilia. The two are quite distinct and it would be wrong for anyone to draw the impression from reports of the case that being gay and being a potential child abuser are in any way connected.

What the AJN didn't report is that many people believe Glick is still lying about what he knew and when he knew it. Some of those people claim to have evidence that proves it.

An open letter was sent to the Yeshiva College mailing list this week by a community member who wants the community to stop Glick and other Chabad honchos from using community funds to defend themselves from the criminal and civil charges that will probably be filed against them. Bruce Cooke wrote that:

Quote:
I have previously written openly about the absence of transparency and accountability at the Yeshivah Centre and resulting abuse of power. It is now clear that the ramifications of this unchecked power has had a devastating effect on the safety of children under the Yeshivahs' care.

Almost exactly one year ago, I called upon Rabbi Glick and the leadership at Yeshivah to stand down pending the outcome of the Court process in relation to the alleged sexual abuse of students at Yeshivah College. No one has resigned of their own accord. No personal apology or even approach has been made to any of the victims or their families.

Rabbi Glick remains one the Yeshivah Centre’s highest paid employees and most powerful individuals. As well as being, Head of Student Welfare, he is a Trustee of the organisation and a member of its spiritual leadership, the Vaad Ruchni. Over the years, Rabbi Glick has received millions of dollars in salary and benefits from the Yeshivah Centre.

Most of the current Executive remains from that lengthy period of abuse and cover-up.

The matters before the Court, including allegations of rape of students by a former employee or contractor on the premises, underscore the need for change at the Yeshivah Centre. Those who failed the children must be held to account.

Regrettably, with a Mugabe style regime running the Yeshivah Centre, it is highly unlikely that either Rabbi Glick or the Executive will do the morally correct thing and resign from their positions.

Accordingly, Rabbi Glick and the Executive must not be allowed to waste any further community funds defending themselves and the results of their long term failed leadership. Their war on accountability & transparency and refusal to confront their mistakes must not be rewarded with access to communal monies. In compromising the children they have surely forfeited any rights to call upon funds collected from Shule membership fees, school fees, government funds and donations from the wider community.

The costs required to resolve the sexual abuse scandal and ensuing damages claims must be the sole personal responsibility of Rabbi Glick and the Executive, and they must make that public undertaking accordingly.

The Yeshivah Centre exists on donations from the immediate & wider community not to mention very generous government funding...
