Join Greens: Labor MP to gay marriage proponents

SENIOR government backbencher John Murphy has said people in the Labor Party calling for the law to be changed to allow gay marriage should join the Greens.

Mr Murphy also said Prime Minister Julia Gillard should put the issue to a referendum, which he believed would be defeated. ''Let the people of Australia speak. Why don't we have a referendum with the election?''

His comments come after gay marriage received a boost from its legalisation in New York State.

Although Ms Gillard opposes gay marriage, its Labor supporters, including leading left-wing senator Doug Cameron, are trying to get ALP policy liberalised.

Parliamentary time has been set aside on August 24 for MPs to give feedback from consultations in their electorates on the issue. This follows Parliament passing a motion moved by Greens MP Adam Bandt.

Mr Murphy said the notion was ''insulting'' - he consulted his electorate on issues all the time. ''I don't need a motion to go and listen to my voters.''

He said Muslims in his seat were even stronger than Christians in not wanting the law changed.

''People are questioning why we are going down this path - there are so many important things the Labor Party has to be dealing with. They do not include same sex marriage.''

Mr Murphy stressed he would be happy to see a civil register for gay unions. He rejected casting gay marriage as a human rights issue. Discrimination against same sex couples had already been eliminated, ''and rightly so'', he said.

''The bulk of gay people aren't looking to get married anyway. Not even Bob Brown wants this for himself.''

Just like the democrats in America, the labor party will be overtaken by socialist, communists, progressives, environmentalists ect. There will not be 1 labor member left that is not a loon.

I'm still waiting for the enlightened Greens to endorse my relationship with Candi, my 6-year-old pony. I want our relationship to be given formal recognition. I want to marry Candi.

Wait in line, Greens' human equality first ... then you can put your personal wish for enforcing bestiality onto innocent animals to us all.

Because it doesn't REQUIRE a referendum ... OR a plebicite
Nor does legislation on carbon permits

Governments are elected to GOVERN
Not to run to the polls every fortnight on every piece of legislation that someone disagrees with

WHENEVER I next hear the words REFERENDUM. PLEBICITE or MANDATE ... it will be too soon

What a stupid response from the MP.

This debate is no longer supported by a minority few.  Is he basically suggesting Labor no longer represents the majority of society on social issues? I understand making "tough" decisions on economic policy, considering the majority of people in Australia aren't economists.  But when it comes to social policy? FFS. Recognise the majority of Australia supports gay marriage. Recognise, you idiot MP, that your constituents support gay marriage.  Move on already from your own bias, you buffoon.

So you're saying the demographics of the Labor party will change, just like they have for the Liberal party, who are now controlled by the loon right wing nutjobs?  Soon moderates won't exist there, and the party of Menzies will cease to exist as it once was.
