Title: Secret plans for Waste dump for WA?
Post by keithy on Sep 13th, 2007 at 4:11pm

Secret plans for Waste dump for WA? - A rail line from Port Hedland thru Chichester Ranges, to link up with the Adelaide-Darwin line?

Sounds expensive - if this is so, and - what is it for?

John White's Nuclear Fuel Leasing Group (of which Pangea is a partner) proposed restricted area in WA or SA for the "High Isolation" nuclear waste repository. Pilbara has several restricted Dept of Defence areas. There are several uranium deposits in the eastern Pilbara.

Pangea proposed a high level international nuclear waste dump in the Savory Basin (marked on map at left by radiation sign).

That was stopped in 2003 when a promotional video to investors was leaked.

Is the Savory Basin dump back on the agenda? Why else would Fotescue Mining, Lang O'Rourke and Austrack be outlaying $millions for this isolated area rail line?.

Well, Prime Minister Howard did promise, on 27 April 2007 to repeal Commonwealth legislation prohibiting nuclear activities. WA's legislation against uranium mining and nuclear waste dumping would need to be overthrown.

Did Howard give guarantees to John White et al - so they could get started on this costly rail line?

After all, the National Council of the Liberal Party in June unanimously endorsed an "international" high level waste dump, nuclear reactors, and uranium enrichment.

Because it is not our problem.

Australia has a superpower: and that is to kick some Nuclear cowboys in the head.

Who needs cowboys running the Nuclear power industry...we have the power to hold them to account.

There are some genuie reasons for aussie becomng a storage of used uranium.

1/ We are the source of much of it.

2/ We have the space, geological and political stability.

3/ It would be commensurate with us being a safe supply of uranium. ie offering uranium rods on a swoppa rod style. can only buy a new rod, when the old one is returned.

I don't like the idea. it is valid though.

The value of holding Nuclear cowboys to account in an age of terrorism is priceless.

Election campains really don't need sqillions if they aren't shacky to start with.

Do we deal with coal waste?

What other dangerous wastes do we deal with after the selling of the raw product?

It would be commensurate with being a prostitute.

Title: Greens say govt of signed nuclear deal
Post by freediver on Sep 18th, 2007 at 6:28pm
http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Greens-say-govt-of-signed-nuclear-deal/2007/09/18/1189881483158.html

The Australian Greens say the federal government has quietly signed up to US President George W Bush's global nuclear pact without any public announcement.

Greens senator Christine Milne said the government signed the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) at an International Atomic Energy Agency meeting in Vienna, Austria, on Sunday night.

The US Energy Department stated after the meeting that Energy Secretary Samuel W Bodman and officials from 16 other nations, including Australia, had agreed to increase international nuclear energy cooperation through the GNEP.

Other countries involved include Russia, with which Australia agreed on the sidelines of last week's APEC summit to allow to buy Australian uranium for its expanding atomic energy program.

Senator Milne speculated the development brought Australia closer to allowing an international nuclear waste dump.

Sydney accepting nuke facility: ANSTO

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Sydney-accepting-nuke-facility-ANSTO/2007/09/19/1189881591407.html

A new survey has found a growing number of people believe the nuclear facility in southern Sydney is safe, the federal government's nuclear agency says.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) says it conducted a survey which revealed people are more comfortable with a nuclear reactor than they were when last surveyed in 2004.

The ANSTO telephone survey of 550 people, which included residents of the surrounding areas of Sutherland, Bankstown and the Illawarra, found 90 per cent of respondents see the presence of an Australian nuclear science and technology facility as important.

Perception that a new nuclear reactor is safe has risen 12 per cent to 77 per cent over the past three years, ANSTO said.

"With reference to the current public debate on nuclear power, 83 per cent were comfortable for ANSTO to play a role with nine per cent opposed," said ANSTO general manager of public affairs Andrew Humpherson.

I reckon dump as much uranium waste (that we dug up and sold for anyway) in the 'wasteland' that is WA(aste) State.
Who knows, all that extra radiation might stimulate some economic growth for the State and make the kangaroos turn carnivorous.  ;D
