Title: Moon landing... why was it such a big deal?
Post by DonaldTrump on Feb 27th, 2007 at 2:56pm
Just out of curiousity, does anyone else think the moon landing has been blown out of proportion when it comes to 'landmark' events of the 20th century?

For example, the first human to be launched into space, a Russian, 'Yuri Gagarin,' has been long forgotten, whereas, the first man on the moon has been forever remembered.

To me, the first man in space is just as good, if not BIGGER, than the moon landing.

I think that the moon landing was merely 'prettier' on film and the Americans managed to 'advertise' it much better. Hence making it a bigger event in history.

Does anyone else share my views?

Space is harder to define than landing on the moon. It's just a progression from the first manned flight. Landing on the moon is also far more technically complex. You have to escape a gravitational field twice, not once, and the second time without on the gorund support. Actually touching something seems more meaningful than just getting high.

Is there video from the first Russian in space?

Probably a black and white fuzzy screen.

True. But don't you think this Russian guy deserved the coverage that Neil Armstrong did?

That depends. How high did he get, and what was the previous record for height?

Even if what he did was special, he doesn't deserve the same level of fame as Armstrong. Not that it really matters anyway.

he probably did get alot of coverage, but over in the USSR.
it was during the Cold War years, so i don't think the US would have wanted to give a Russian Communist the limelight.

I saw it on the telly that had been set up in the classroom. To a 10 year old it was a very big deal,i will never forget that.To be able to go out into your backyard at night and look at the moon then the next day see those blokes walking on it was kind of sci-fi and reality tv all in one.Our imaginations were running wild with ideas of tours of space, looking at earth from your flat on the moon, kicking a footy 20 miles etc etc.
That and 911 will be stuck in my minds eye forever

Of course it happened!
I believe that the conspiracy theorists are communists who couldnt accept the fact that the west got to the moon first.
