Title: The United Nations Security Council
Post by Armchair_Politician on Oct 8th, 2026 at 3:19pm
I think it’s time that the United Nations Security Council gets a much needed shake up. It’s clearly become beyond useless, an expensive joke on the rest of the world when you have nations like Russia and China behaving the way they are and able to veto any UNSC resolution for any reason they choose. I think it’s high time that Russia and China is booted out of the UNSC and/or the power of veto to be permanently removed from all members of the UNSC. Otherwise you can have Russia invading Ukraine illegally and vetoing any and all UNSC resolutions that support Ukraine either philosophically, financially, materially or militarily even though Russia is clearly the aggressor. This situation shows the current setup and rules of the UNSC has become redundant. Russia should not be permitted to rejoin until it withdraws all forces from Ukrainian territory, including that which it has illegally annexed. China should not be permitted to rejoin until it stops its hostile activities in the South China Sea and rescinds its illegal claims to islands in that area, as per the court decision against its claim.

No mention of the US being booted too ?

Ai, all vetos last 12 months united nations ?

In the 12 months leading up to October 2026, the United Nations Security Council recorded a total of eight vetoes. These were cast across two main geopolitical conflicts: the war in Gaza and the conflict in Ukraine.

Breakdown by Country and Topic

Russia: Cast four vetoes, including two related to amendments on a draft resolution concerning Ukraine and two on other matters (including sanctions on North Korea).

United States: Cast three vetoes, all related to the war in Gaza (including resolutions on cease-fires and humanitarian pauses).

China: Cast one veto, also related to the war in Gaza.

This period marked a significant increase in veto usage, with the seven vetoes in 2024 being the highest number since 1986, and the four vetoes in 2025 continuing the trend of deadlock on major international crises. The United Kingdom and France did not use their veto power during this specific 12-month window.

The veto power is there because it is pointless to pass a resolution that one of the major powers opposes. The UN will never function as a way for the US to force China's hand or vice versa.

It is also important for the major democracies to have a veto, otherwise the UN could just become a committee of dictators. Or China could buy everyone's vote.

The UN is a toothless tiger. Changing the paperwork won't change that reality. But getting all the leaders together in one room might still actually achieve something, even if it isn't readily apparent.
