Title: Emotional training saved my life.
Post by aquascoot on Oct 7th, 2026 at 9:00am
Dave's post on delayed appointments got me thinking.

Saturday just past,  2 big mastiff looking dogs broke through my front gate.
They started chasing 2 horses in front house yard and wife was very emotional.
Then they both latched onto my old Doberman who has cancer and had him.pinnedvon the ground.
Now I love that dog like my child and I snapped

Got a broom and started laying unto these dogs.
They were actually not trying to kill him, more play fighting in retrospect  but I didn't know that at the time.

Neighbours , a concreter and a retired fireman turned up.

Just then owner turned up and let's just say had a bad attitude.

" leave my smacking dogs alone" he bellowed.

I ran at him with the broom.

Now we were standing face to face.
He was a BIG dude.

I said , have a swing, you can spend years in jail
My wife was screaming.
The concreter was screaming.
The dude tells my wife " you need a muzzle bitch".

It was then,  quite suddenly, I regained my self control.

He and his sons had the dogs by the collars but they weren't leaving.
The concreter really wanted a fight.
I could see broken jaws and head injuries ,maybe myself or my wife but I didn't want to just back down.

I said to the son. Mate let's load the dogs up in your car and get your dad put of here.
I know he loves his dogs, sorry for belting them, my poor old bloke has cancer.

The son softened.

The bloke and the concreter were still shirt fronting each other.

The son got his dad our.
I got the concreter out.

Situation settled.

I truly think if punches flew it would have been a disaster.
Broken bones, jail terms, dogs on people , awful.

I took wife inside and calmed her down

We got dressed cause we were going out.

And here's the funny thing.

The BIG guy who owned the dogs pulled up as we were heading out.

He almost had tears in his eyes.
He said he had shamed himself in front of his son
He spologised to my wife who just explained she loved her horses and wad scared they would go thru a fence
He shook my hand ( nearly broke it with his grip)

And THEN  my concreter mate comes running from next door to defend me.

I assured him it was all cool.
He said he still wanted to bash the C.

Mate , I said,
Then you might go to jail.

Very grateful for the training.
I think, as a 65 kg guy, it saved my life

Hi Aqua,
correct me if I'm wrong but I think as a farmer -

you're allowed to shoot dogs that are attacking your stock?   :-/

I had similar incident few years back when neighbor's dogs attacked my goats.
I used a pick handle on one of the dogs but the neighbor was apologetic right on, apparently one of the dogs was doing that to other neighbors as well and he knew that damaging livestock is a serious offense.

Question:

In Australia - as a farmer - you're allowed to shoot dogs that are attacking your stock?

Answer:

Yes, farmers in Australia are generally allowed to shoot dogs that are actively attacking or worrying their livestock, but the rules are governed strictly by state and territory laws rather than a single national rule.

State-by-State Rules

Queensland:
Under Business Queensland guidelines, roaming domestic dogs or wild dogs may be shot only if you reasonably believe they are attacking or likely to attack livestock, the dog is not under someone's control, you hold a valid firearms licence, and the land is subject to a rural fire levy.

Western Australia:
Under Section 34 of the WA Dog Act 1976, a property owner or handler can lawfully shoot a dog found attacking livestock or poultry if there is no other way to stop the attack, and you must notify the police as soon as practicable.

New South Wales:
Farmers or their employees can lawfully seize, detain, or injure/destroy a dog on their property if they reasonably believe it may injure or kill farmed livestock.

Victoria:
Landholders have legal rights to protect their stock from threatening dogs on their property, though community discussions on Facebook indicate a general consensus that actions must be directly tied to an active threat and local police reporting rules may apply.

Key Legal Requirements

• Active Threat: In most jurisdictions, the dog must be actively attacking, chasing, or posing an immediate, unavoidable threat to stock. Shooting a dog merely for trespassing or after it has already fled is generally illegal.

• Firearms Compliance: You must hold a valid state-issued firearms licence and use an approved firearm type safely.

• Notification: Several states require you to report the shooting to the local police or local government rangers within a specific timeframe.

• Owner Liability: Dog owners whose pets escape and harm livestock face heavy financial liability for vet bills, lost stock, and major council fines.

If you want to check the exact rules for your region, tell me which state or territory you are located in so I can provide the specific legislation.

I have 2 pigging dogs next door. If they got out of their yard and came after me, I don't care how much I have loved them for the last 5 year, they would be dead if they came after me.

If you own a shotgun, do own reloading and don't want to kill use rock salt instead of lead shot.

Since when it not getting into a brawl something to do with "emotional training"? Did you have to go to anger management classes?

Hi there  freediver.

When loved ones are threatened and the perpetrator is on your property , his blood is up, he is twice your size.
Bystanders arrive and escalate the situation.
Your partner is insulted.

I would suggest getting to an outcome where the perpetrator comes back , apologies, shakes your hand and no one gets whacked requires emotional control.

Please set out in detail what YOU would have done in this situation  ;)

For starters, I wouldn't have gotten into a fight with dogs. The last bloke I saw do that ended up stabbing himself.

As for emotional training.
There was a lot of aggressive energy.
From the animals and the animal instincts in the humans.

2 cycles of parasympathetic breathing and I was able  to calm myself and see that the son was also calmer then his dad.
By approaching him , it was de escalated.

If I hadn't practiced those techniques I think I would have a broken jaw.
And , what sort of a man, when an intruder tells his wife " you need a muzzle bitch " would slink off inside to display he has good anger management skills.

What woman would accept that .
It's disgraceful  :-[ :-[

For starters, I often feel, that when the videoing start…it’s like “game on” and I reckon that it escalates tensions for the “actors” to show off.

But, the situation cooled with sensible calm approach (tensions can happen unexpectedly and quickly, before one can recollect their thoughts about the sudden situation) and the big guy apologised and said he was ashamed how he acted in front of the son and shook hands with Aqua.
So it’s settled as far as I think.
Why aggravate it any further, they are all neighbours and as the saying goes, keep your friends close and enemies closer.
I’m certain no more drama will ensue. So a bit of respect has been restored, rather than unresolved seething anger or backlash.

As for it all happening so fast with animals… that’s why humans react quickly with panic, because they are our babies, and we humans have trained our animals to be dependant on us for care, feeding, safety, and companionship. Trust is built that way. We are their family.

Yes Sophia.
I have had to intervene when Jack Russell had brown snake bailed up.

I think snakes and wild dogs trigger a primitive part of our brain and we become very primitive in our reactions.

In truth, should have taken 30 seconds to put on gloves , bike helmet , boots before intervening with dogs or snakes.

Very hard to calm down and we need to practice this.

I have been in one road rage incident where druggie was pounding on window

Instructed daughter to lock doors and we filmed it and drove off when safe.
Found that less triggering to be honest.

If he had got into car however, I don't think "anger management  training" is going to help.
Not with a druggie behaving like a wild animal.

If I didn't exercise such emotional control , I might have responded

Can you see how learning the skills of emotional control help us to develop emotional intelligence and self regulate ?

How could it cloud his judgement when eventually he consciously controlled them from initial reaction?
Perhaps emotional training = emotional taming?
It’s definitely an ongoing lifelong training/taming for us humans.
Do we surprise ourselves when we react the way we do given sudden situations?
Do we feel satisfied or regretful after?
As they say about hindsight.

It’s definitely a lifelong taming of our selves.
There’s mainly 2 reactions in a situation that maybe either won’t understand the other.
Example: reacting to save or, a stunned “bystander” effect.

There’s stories of people going into save someone from being beaten to death by some toxic person, or jumping in to save someone that’s drowning, only to lose their life for such “heroic” acts.
And there’s people that may feel stunned and just stand there quite numb.
Why are there these 2 types of reactions? So vastly different from each other.

We each may not know which one we are, until such situation arises.

What "emotional training" are you talking about?

The gift which keeps giving.

In business you can destroy your business by losing it with a customer.
Hence we train our brains to control our emotions.

Part of this is breath work but a lot of it is realising , every time you feel " upset" or " triggered"  you must refresh this immediately  to

" this isn't happening TO ME  this is happening FOR ME.

so when you are stuck in traffic or you see litter on the footpath  or the sink is full of dirty dishes you think

" this is an opportunity to not  yell at my wife or be a little whining sook but to man up and humbley fix the problem ".

I call this working on your emotions.
Gym training to strengthen the mind.
Done on a daily basis.

It might save your business.
It might save your relationship.
It might save your life .

It's the reason I am not attacking you at the moment for your silly questions.
Rather I am using them as a micro suck , a little petty annoyance to help me exercise my higher / better self.

I thank you for providing this opportunity for personal growth

I would hate to see you watching your kids play.

I have no doubt that dog would lay down his life for me.
So, no, I am not going to put myself in lockdown to stay " safe".

Now, my wife trying to keep the dogs from chasing her horses through a fence ?

Am I also to observe this from the bedroom window as part of an anger management strategy  :-[ :-[ :-[/quote]

Your emotions are clouding your judgement Scoot.

What "emotional training" are you talking about?

You are quite triggering with your rather ignorant posts suggesting I should abandon my dog to being attacked.

Now , I will do 30 seconds of deep breath work to gain emotional control.

Ahh , that's better.

"Freediver, you are not dealing with me in good faith."

If I didn't exercise such emotional control , I might have responded

"Freediver , you are a dead set moron."

Can you see how learning the skills of emotional control help us to develop emotional intelligence and self regulate ?

So the emotional training that saved your life is breathing and telling yourself a little mantra about personal obstacles?

Incorrect.

Lots of practice on a daily basis to master the emotions.
10,000 hours to mastery.

There were two parts to the eventful day …
all within a relatively short space of time.
First it was about the animal world and intervention. So emotions went up there out of concern for animals welfare:
Second it became about human intervention and dealing with different emotions with concern.
And luckily, third part averted. (Injury, police, reports, hospital etc)

Correct  sophia.

Freedriver thinks it's simple to just de escalate  from a very hieghtened state.
It's not

And bad outcomes are not surprising.

It looks easy to play the piano or play golf.
But both take hours and hours of conscious training.

And controlling your emotions in a super charged scenario is more challenging then tapping a piano key or swinging a golf club.

These skills really need to be trained.
I really thought I had that down, but now realize more training is necessary

But in our cotton wool  society , people aren't going to be prepared for a serious conflict , at all.

How many people have done repeated first aid and CPR courses but would freeze if they witnessed a collapse at a gathering.

Preparation , over and over is the key and you are going to have to create stress in your daily life and then practice calming yourself.
Cold plunge or meditation are really ways of creating stress

We are but mere human, we always surprise ourselves! Yes we learn from mistakes and make mental notes not to repeat mistakes. Just that…there’s always new mistakes waiting in the wings  ;D

But in our cotton wool  society , people aren't going to be prepared for a serious conflict , at all.
Sadly that’s the gist of it. Like I mentioned earlier, those that respond to emergencies and those that freeze up with that ‘by stander effect’

How many people have done repeated first aid and CPR courses but would freeze if they witnessed a collapse at a gathering.
I have for one! And I have stopped to assist in road accidents, also I was first responder not long ago to an elder female that was on the ground in an isolated carpark. I happened to be lost looking for an address and found her. I was cautious as I approached praying she wasn’t dead! I knelt besides her as she clutched her left side of chest, I wondered if it was heart or ribs. I asked her to take a deep breath and it hurt, yep she fell and broke her ribs. When ambulance came they asked me how I knew when I said it’s suspected rib fracture/s. Stuffed if I know, I just did! And it ended up being correct. There’s just something about 1st aid training that gives us a better perspective and less fear when dealing with injuries.

Preparation , over and over is the key and you are going to have to create stress in your daily life and then practice calming yourself.
Cold plunge or meditation are really ways of creating stress
I find deep slow breaths really help, a lot!

Will be doing more of this
From chat gpt

The Core Practice: Resonant Breathing

Resonant breathing means inhaling and exhaling for equal lengths of time to hit a rhythm of exactly 6 breaths per minute. This specific frequency synchronises your heart rate, blood pressure, and brainwaves into a state of "cardiac coherence," which dramatically strengthens your parasympathetic nervous system over time.

Daily Routine Architecture

• The Cadence: Inhale for 5 seconds → Exhale for 5 seconds (no breath retention or holds).
• The Volume: Keep your breaths smooth, quiet, and low in your belly. Do not gasp or hyperventilate.
• The Micro-Dose Strategy: Practice this for 5 minutes, twice a day (e.g., once right after waking up, and once during a lunch or afternoon transition).

How to Anchor It Into Your Day (Habit Stacking)

Consistency beats duration. Instead of trying to find a spare 20 minutes, "stack" this 5-minute practice onto habits you already do every single day:
• The Morning Commute / Coffee: Use the time while your coffee is brewing or while sitting on public transport to quietly count your 5-in, 5-out breaths.
• The "Clear the Screen" Transition: Before you open your laptop to start work, or the moment you close it for the day, close your eyes and take 30 resonant breaths to create a psychological boundary.
• The Habit Trigger: If you find yourself scrolling mindlessly or waiting in a queue, use that as a cue to drop your awareness into your belly and slow your breathing cadence.

Would you like to tell us more about all this emotional training you do?

Sure but we must first acknowledge I have explained this already.
Now YOU do lots of hours a day of training in being distracted which is why I must explain it again.

The program of emotional training  by aquascoot to learn emotional resilience.

During the day , on multiple occasions, an event will occur causing a triggering of frustration
Examples
Light turns red
No milk in fridge.
Dog barks and wakes you at 3 am
Big queue at servo
Dinner too salty
Rain wets washing
Forget to put bins out
Cut off in traffic
Bit of dust gets in eyes.
Black ant bite.
Power bill up a bit.
Long commercial break
Phone goes flat.
Spill drink
Mild toothache.
Stubb toe.
Wife snores.

And a million more.

These are called by aqua. " Micro sucks".

By immediately catching yourself being a tiny bit negative, immediate reframe, gratitude for life, 30 seconds of deep breathing, reminding yourself that pain is unavoidable but suffering is a choice, choosing not to suffer and to be at peace when things don't " go your way "
Smiling and laughing at yourself for being such a pussy that you even got slightly annoyed.

You are building the mental muscle to handle bigger and bigger threats to your peace of mind.

Am I a Master guru , who was able to remain like a Buddhist monk in the face of a dog fight on my property?
Not yet.
But I was able to calm down quicker then the dogs the horses the dog owner , he wife, the neighbours x 2 and heir partners x 2.

But I haven't done my 10,000 hours to mastery.

However , I have done an hour of calmly responding to you and smiling at the progress you have provided for me.
Like I say
An antagonist is the gift which keeps giving.
I must thank you for this good conversation

Marlboro Man indeed.
But physical strength requires lots of physical exercise.
And mental strength requires lots of mental exercise.

In all seriousness try this.

Take a chair into your bathroom and sit there for an hour and see if you can remain calm.
If you can't , recognize that your core energy is negative and you are using distractions like  food tv media alcohol drugs to cope.
That's not tough that's weak.

Weak people need pot , alcohol, phones, tv , sweet food, mouthing off about trump.
It's not strength , it's weakness.
They need a crutch to cope. :'( :'(

Geez I can’t believe it! There must be something in the air for such confrontational aggressions?
At 3.30 pm today I went to pick up library books on hold, then before going to buy seafood I felt like going for a punt at the pokies.
I parked nearest the entry where and in the outdoor smoking area saw a few tradies sitting around probably having an after work beer etc.
Half hour later I decide I will walk out $50 in front.  :)
As I walk out the entry area, I noticed 2 elder guys on my left stopping to look at something.
There was an argument between 2 guys in the car park.
One was pointing the finger and mouth going, the other one turned to walk away nodding his head.
Then the finger pointer said something that made the other guy go back to him.
I walked to my vehicle and opened door, I looked over at them thinking if I get my phone out to video it, it will escalate. As I went to drive off I see 4 guys on the grass arguing and another tradie started hopping with his fists ready to box, the 4th tradie put his hands up in surrender and nodded no and stepped back.
I noticed a man in a car nearby opposite and he looked as if he was trying to look occupied with something in his car but he had his door open and looked ready to jump out.
I drive out of carpark, happy to see the tall young tradie put his hands up to not fight.

Should I have gone back in to tell security?
Well nothing happened and I’m thinking they all had a bit to drink!

But what a coincidence! I thought of you Aqua!
Me makes a note to go earlier to pokies before tradie Knock off time (I was dog sitting all day until 3pm)

Interesting sofia.

Tradies  drinking ... Cope
Pokies ...bit of a cope.
I usually see tradies eating pies and Red bulls...cope.

Low consciousness living. Combative, dark energy , asleep , numb , unthinking masses
Sort of like a cow or a sheep.
Not surprising it's a place with animal like behaviour.

Bushwalking , art galleries, beautiful cathedrals and architecture
Joy, thriving , gratitude, high vibration , collaborative expansive
Higher consciousness living
Not likely to see a punch up break out in an art gallery or cathedral or bushwalk

I imagined Aqua like this :

Aqua is actually a close doppleganger for Tony abbott ;)

My advice -

don't yell and carry on in such situations unless you are prepared to back it up with your fists.

You did well to avoid fisty cuffs.
