Greens reveal new leader after former head steps down :)
Wed 30 September 2026 Yahoo News. David Shoebridge is the new leader of the Greens after Larissa Waters stepped down due to ill health. The former barrister and NSW state member has been selected to lead the party after just four years in federal politics. The deputy leadership has landed with Steph Hodgins-May, who entered the Senate in 2024, replacing Janet Rice. Senator Shoebridge is renowned for his forthright approach to attacking political opponents in Senate Estimates hearings and press conference, along with his stances on defence and foreign affairs, including his opposition to AUKUS. :) Larissa Waters has stepped down as Greens leader due to health issues. The party, which has a primary vote of about 12 per cent in most opinion polls and holds the balance of power in the upper house, voted for the new leadership team during a two-day policy meeting in Sydney. Senators Shoebridge and Hodgins-May announced their joint ticket on Wednesday morning. :) While only in parliament for a little over two years, Victorian Senator Hodgins-May has appealed to young voters through sharp social media posts and spearheading the push for a 25 per cent gas tax. "We are excited by what we can and must do as Greens," a statement from Senator Shoebridge and Senator Hodgins-May said before the leadership vote. "This is the time to build our movement as the home for every Australian who want action on the climate crisis, a fair return from our resources, a secure home and income, and to not sell out our independence to the US or the one per cent." The new leadership comes days after Senator Waters' decision to step down from the leadership due to deteriorating health issues. The Queensland senator took the reins after the disappointing outcome at the 2025 election saw the minor party lose three lower-house seats, including the electorate of former leader Adam Bandt. |

David Shoebridge and Steph Hodgins-May to lead Greens in fight against corporate greed
2026-09-30 greens.org.au Senator David Shoebridge and Senator Steph Hodgins-May have been elected to lead the Australian Greens to challenge the growing concentration of corporate power, with a plan to take on the institutions that have left working people falling behind. Senator Shoebridge was elected Leader at today’s Party Room meeting alongside new Deputy Leader Senator Steph Hodgins-May. Today’s ballot follows Senator Larissa Waters’ decision to step down from the leadership to prioritise her recovery from kidney disease. Both Shoebridge and Hodgins-May have been leading voices against growing corporate influence in Parliament, taking on the gas lobby, AUKUS, AI tech corporations and fossil fuel billionaires. A lawyer, campaigner and parliamentarian known for fearlessly holding power to account, Senator Shoebridge cut his teeth in law. He represented workers, challenged attempts to restrict workers’ compensation, advocated for survivors of child sexual abuse and held employers accountable for unsafe workplaces. A powerful voice for the NSW Greens in State Parliament, fighting corruption and backroom deals, he has taken that work to the Federal Senate. In the Senate, David has led the fight to grow popular campaigns against the hugely wasteful AUKUS nuclear subs, AI corporations and their ‘pervert glasses’, and exposed Australia’s defence industry involvement in the genocide in Palestine. An ambitious and energetic voice for a generation locked out of politics, Steph has quickly become one of the strongest opponents of corporate greed in Parliament. Before entering the Senate in 2024 she took on the world’s biggest polluters, working with Greenpeace and Pacific Island communities. Steph has been a fierce opponent of the cosy relationship between the Albanese government and lobbyists for Woodside, and a leading campaigner for a minimum 25% tax on gas exports. A mum of two young kids, Steph has fought to take profit out of early childhood education and care, and build a truly universal system that delivers the high-quality, safe and affordable care that families and children deserve. Australian Greens Party Room leadership team: Leader: David Shoebridge Deputy Leader: Steph Hodgins-May Whip: Nick McKim Manager of Greens Business: Sarah Hanson-Young Party Room Chair & Deputy Whip: Penny Allman-Payne Senator David Shoebridge, Leader of the Australian Greens said: “Now is the time to build the Greens as the home for every Australian who wants action on the climate crisis, a fair return from our resources, a secure home and income, and to not sell out our independence to the US or the 1%. “The economy isn’t working for people. Millions of Australians can see that something is fundamentally wrong when people working full time can’t afford a home while billionaires get richer and big corporations buy off politicians. “We want to build an Australia where your bank balance, your postcode or where you were born do not determine the life you get to live. “Whether it’s in Parliament, Estimates, or leading the movement, the Greens will take on corporate power, defend your rights, rebuild strong public institutions and stop politicians from selling you out. “The answer to the rise of One Nation and the far right is to give people hope, and make people’s lives better with real economic and environmental security. It is as simple as a meal before school, as clear as no new coal and gas, and as challenging as holding back the wave of US billionaire tech bros and their vampire data centres. “Labor has proven they can’t stop One Nation because they made the conditions for them to thrive. The Greens can. ”Between us, Steph and I have taken on AUKUS, gas companies, lobbyists, billionaire AI companies, and the Labor Government. “I want to thank my parliamentary colleagues for their support and I look forward to working with Steph as Deputy Leader and the rest of our team as we take on the challenges ahead. “I’d also like to thank Larissa for stepping into the leadership at a challenging moment and leading our movement with courage, compassion and extraordinary generosity. She brought people together, listened deeply and never lost sight of the values that unite us. I wish her all the love and strength in the world as she focuses on her health. “We also thank Mehreen Faruqi for her work and dedication as Deputy Leader, Mehreen is a formidable force against the far right and will continue to have a critical role in fighting for a more just Australia. “For our supporters, members, and all those relying on the Greens to fight for you, I want you to know that we are ready to fight the billionaires, the big polluters and everyone trying to turn us against each other while they hoard wealth and power. “The ultra-wealthy and powerful have enough people fighting for them. Our job is to fight for you. “We are not here to manage a broken system. We are here to replace it.” Senator Steph Hodgins-May, Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens said: “My generation has grown up seeing politicians sell out our future for corporate greed - delaying action on climate change while housing, childcare and the basic things people need to build a good life become harder and harder to afford. “Rich corporations are screwing us over because Labor, Liberals and One Nation are letting them write the rules. |

Every time I look at the Green in my electorate the guy / girl I would have to actually vote for turns out to be a nutter. |

Excellent Choice ... now Australia has our own Zohran Mamdani like leader.
Green's trump card at the next federal election is it's position on AI. The Greens new AI spokesperson requires guardrails — and a ministry. David Shoebridge believes Australia should look to Malaysia on balancing the U.S. and China. https://www.politico.com/news/2026/09/13/greens-new-ai-spokesman-david-shoebridge-talks-data-centers-01073669 Defence Shoebridge served as the party’s spokesperson for Defence and Veterans' Affairs since entering federal parliament in 2022. He is a prominent opponent of the AUKUS nuclear submarine pact, arguing it compromises Australian sovereignty and poses long-term environmental risks, and has advocated redirecting the projected $77.5 billion savings toward conventional capabilities like domestic drones and anti-submarine warfare. Shoebridge’s defence portfolio also includes Foreign Affairs and Digital Rights, where he has aggressively challenged government transparency regarding arms exports to Israel and military accountability in Afghanistan. Finally, quality representation for people who don't agree with Labor, Liberal, and One Nation's goose stepping. |

ai :
David Shoebridge is a primary opposer of the AUKUS treaty and argues that Australia’s close proximity to the United States and President Donald Trump represents a sovereign risk to the nation. He has consistently advocated for distance from the United States, viewing the military and strategic alliance as a threat to Australian independence. Shoebridge has accused the US government of interfering in Australian domestic politics, such as labeling the Trump administration’s criticism of Australia’s online safety laws as an "extraordinary intervention." He has also criticized the Australian government for complying with US extradition requests, describing actions like the detention of Dan Duggan as "doing the bidding of the United States." As the new federal leader of the Greens, Shoebridge’s platform explicitly aims to "not sell out our independence to the US," marking a shift toward a more confrontational stance on foreign policy compared to previous leadership approaches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosecution_of_Daniel_Duggan |

Title: Re: Greens Reveal New Leader - David Shoebridge Post by LameDuck Donald on Oct 1st, 2026 at 8:49am Labor and the Coalition have established a bipartisan parliamentary committee on AI to examine workforce impacts, skills, and the technology’s risks and benefits. The Australian Greens have criticised the government’s approach, with new leader David Shoebridge and Senator Sarah Hanson-Young demanding stronger regulation, an "AI safety act," and that the government not "outsource Australia's future to tech bros." While the government offered the Greens a spot on a new AI committee, reports indicate the offer was conditional on Shoebridge not being the representative, following his viral interrogation of public servants on AI and bureaucracy. The Greens continue to push for a moratorium on data centres and stricter copyright protections against an "opt-out" model for AI training data. David Shoebridge is LLON's worst nightmare. |

Albanese says new Greens leader’s remarks ‘somewhat concerning’
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said he was concerned the newly minted Greens leader David Shoebridge had criticised the Labor party during his first speech at the helm yesterday. Shoebridge declared he wants the Greens to replace Labor, casting his party as the one that can “beat down One Nation”. Albanese said the remarks were “somewhat concerning” at a press conference in Tasmania this morning, adding: I think that at a time where we see a rise of a far-right wing party, senator Shoebridge took the opportunity to actually criticise Labor. Yet it's Labor rolling out rouge American AI. Forcing data centres on communities. Pushing up power and water costs. Squandering on nuke subs. Building public housing for military Americans while ignoring Australians. Overseeing a cost of living crisis. Selling weapons to Israel, so they can murder civilians with. Passing draconian laws. Spending like an American drunk sailor in Thailand, so to drive up inflation/rates etc etc. |

Australian Greens co-founder Drew Hutton has launched an extraordinary attack on the party he helped create, challenging new leader David Shoebridge over the Greens' stance on Hamas, transgender issues and the slogan 'globalise the Intifada'. ‘I'll ask the new Greens leader, David Shoebridge, the same question I asked Mehreen: will he issue a statement supporting a two-state solution, condemn Hamas and criticise the use of 'globalise the Intifada'?' Hutton wrote. 'And how are the Greens going to fight One Nation when they think a man can be a woman, won't criticise Hamas and continually wear keffiyahs and have no idea how to communicate with ordinary Australians. |

Section 92 of the Australian Constitution states:
“Trade, commerce, and intercourse among the States… shall be absolutely free.” The High Court has consistently interpreted this to mean: ✔ The Commonwealth cannot prohibit private interstate trade. ✔ The Commonwealth cannot force private businesses out of existence. ✔ The Commonwealth cannot compel private firms to surrender assets. ✔ The Commonwealth cannot create a monopoly by eliminating competitors. This is exactly why Chifley’s 1947 bank nationalisation failed. The Court ruled: The Commonwealth could create a public bank. But it could not force private banks to close or surrender their assets. Doing so would violate Section 92’s guarantee of free interstate commerce. This precedent is still binding. And the Greens’ supermarket plan runs straight into it. |
