Housing is a basic human right because safe and secure shelter is essential for human survival, health, and personal dignity.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services.”

Every person has the right to an adequate standard of living, which includes the right to adequate housing (ICESCR, article 11).

Does that actually mean anything? It sounds like promising someone a piece of string of adequate length. Australian housing has gone well beyond what is adequate for our health and well being.

Which Australia has been a signatory to for over 50 years.
