The Hon. Chris Bowen MPHome Events The Hon. Chris Bowen MP   :)
The Hon. Chris Bowen MP   :)
When
August 5, 2026
11:30 am - 1:30 pm

National Press Club Of Australia
16 National Circuit, Barton, Canberra, ACT, 2600
Event Type
Speakers
The Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, will Address the National Press Club on “Energy Security in an Uncertain World”.

As Australia endures the second global energy crisis in the 2020s how can we fortify our grid and economy from uncertainty? Renewable energy is not only the lowest emissions form of energy and the cheapest, but also in many senses the most secure form of energy. As the Minister has said: the sun has to travel 150 million kilometres to get to the Earth, But it does not have to travel the 150 kilometres that are the Straits of Hormuz. With battery technology now hitting its stride, and Australia third in the world for storage uptake, we are seeing the transition’s promise begin to deliver – with declining wholesale prices and more households taking up renewables. Challenges remain, but this most recent disruption only underscores the need to keep going.

Today Mr Bowen will talk about the importance of renewables, and he will help make sure Australia does not go down, the dangerous and expensive path of nuclear power.   :)

What about thorium !

Aquifers and river systems are collapsing and large areas of Australia are on the precipice of longterm water shortages. Thorium desal along our coastline. It's waste product, salt, used for creating a sodium and chloride battery economy so to supply the world.

Thorium reactors to supply energy for data centres.

Thorium water and electricity to build intensive agriculture.

The global clean energy revolution is failing to displace fossil fuels fast enough to meet climate targets due to surging overall energy demand.  While renewables overtook coal in global electricity generation in 2025 and investment hit record highs, fossil fuel consumption also reached all-time highs because new clean capacity primarily serves growing demand rather than replacing existing infrastructure.

The planet can no longer play diversion games while we burn our world out of the Goldilocks Zone, collapsing our civilisation.

Time to bite the bullet and invest into a thorium future.

A large scale working reactor is always another 5 years away.

8 year old thread Bobby !

A 2-megawatt reactor humming in China’s Gobi Desert runs on liquid salt at 650 degrees instead of water, and last year it pulled off something no reactor had done: it swapped in fresh thorium fuel while still running, like a car refuelling at 70 mph 112 km

https://www.autonocion.com/us/reactor-china-gobi-desert/

A Danish company is building a thorium reactor that fits in a shipping container and runs on the nuclear waste other reactors leave behind, turning material that needs storing for 100,000 years into waste that lasts 300, and wants to build one a day like a car

Read the whole thread -

the last post was  May 12th, 2025.

It has been going for 8 years because I have followed this subject for that long.

2 megawatts is tiny -
large coal power stations have 1000 mega watt turbines
and many have 3 or more of them.

forgiven

Oz doesn't need nuclear power, because we are 27 million people living in a sunny country ranked 6th in land area globally.

The problem is the mainstream belief that currency-issuing governments need  'taxpayer money' to fund the transition to green - and taxpayers don't want to fund the transition.

The problems are energy density, intermittency and storage. ::)
