Temperatures will reach 39C (102F) this week in the Spanish capital and south-west France, with no rain forecast until at least Friday

Firefighters west of Bordeaux are reporting a relatively good night, our correspondent writes, with the fire stabilised – but not under control

In the Gironde region, which includes Bordeaux, the wildfire has burned more than 42,000 hectares, with 240 homes destroyed - see drone photos here

"[It] reminds me a little bit like Pompeii," one resident of Bordeaux tells us. "It was quite difficult to breathe"

More than 300,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain in recent days.

Over the weekend, dozens of wildfires burned over 1 million acres in the US state of Oregon. Thousands are under evacuation orders as the fires have burned homes and forced the closure of major highways.

In Canada, thousands of lightning strikes from storms over the weekend also ignited fresh fires in British Columbia. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said this is one of the worst wildfire seasons on record for the country.

The Bureau of Meteorology declared an El Nino event was under way in June, and since then, the water temperatures in the Pacific – one of the key indicators of the phenomenon – have risen faster than any other occasion in history. El Nino tends to drive temperatures higher on the east coast of Australia, making fire seasons longer and more dangerous.

Models are only as good as any data it receives. If the grid resolution of the data is low, there is low confidence. The data is too sparse to accurately predict anything.

For the exact “instrument accuracy” number, you need the instrument-specific performance spec (often stated in mission/algorithm documentation). From the sources I pulled here, I can give:

    GLM pixel/ground sampling size (8–14 km) but not a single official “instrument accuracy” error (e.g., 1–2 km RMS) from the NOAA pages I found. "

France has arrested 162 people in connection with suspected wildfire arson since July 6 as the country battles an unprecedented wildfire season, Interior Minister Sebastien Lecornu said Monday.

He added that "security forces are fully mobilized to identify arsonists. They will be found, arrested, and held accountable for their actions before the courts."

Lecornu said nine out of 10 wildfires are caused by human activity, with most resulting from negligence such as discarded cigarette butts, barbecues, or construction work carried out without proper precautions.

He urged the public to take preventive measures, including postponing construction work in high-risk conditions, clearing vegetation around properties, and avoiding smoking near dry vegetation.

The minister also said some fires had been deliberately set, stressing that arson is a criminal offence punishable by up to 15 years in prison under French law.

Climate adaptation at its limits.

A climate scientist says Earth is "passing the limits of adaptation" when it comes to withstanding the effects of climate change.



JOHAN ROCKSTROM: Ninety percent of the heat caused by our fossil fuel burning is not in the atmosphere causing the temperature rise, which has led us to the climate crisis we see today - it's in the ocean. Fifty percent of the carbon dioxide from the greenhouse gases we add is not in the atmosphere trapping heat. It's actually stored, half of it in the ocean and half of it on land. So a healthy planet has this extraordinary biogeophysical capacity to buffer and dampen, basically cool the planet. We're seeing, unfortunately, increasing indicators of our planet losing this capacity. Not that we've crossed the tipping point, but forest systems are getting weaker and no longer able to take up as much carbon. The ocean is warming faster than we had expected. Ice is melting faster than we had expected. This is a stress response of a planet that is trying to do everything it can to buffer and dampen change. And when we come closer to the end of this capacity, then of course, the risk is very high that the impacts hit back even harder on our societies.

Pine bark beetles are bad. They impact forests that have not been properly managed. Fire kills the pine bark beetle.

Not according to the FAO, harvests are generally increasing, although all crops are subject to periodical declines due to drought etc. it has always been that way, and unless you have plans for multi-hundred acre greenhouses, always will. 8-)

Heatwave deaths may have increased, of course the other side of the coin is cold deaths have dropped by more than the heat deaths. 8-)

What about malaria? It was called the Ague in Ancient Britain, so it is not a heat related condition. 8-)

Extreme weather events are just that... weather - NOT climate. And of course as people grow richer they own more. It costs more to replace, nothing to do with climate or weather. 8-)

So how many millimeters has the ocean risen in the last 30 years? If the glaciers and polar ice is melting rapidly perhaps you can show that.
