Why did almost the entire world celebrate the start of the new millennium in 2000 AD, which by any logical counting method, was twelve months early?

They were just acknowledging a new number to put at the start of their calendar.

Because Microsoft would have had to wait another whole year before unleashing the disaster known as Windows Me (Millennium Edition) on unsuspecting computer users - including me - at the time?  ;D
