Title: electricity is overtaking petrol and diesel Post by Sprintcyclist on Jun 6th, 2026 at 4:29pm
Norway's EV transition has produced an outcome that economists modelling transportation systems said could not happen for at least another generation — petrol and diesel fuel sales have collapsed so completely that several major fuel station chains have gone bankrupt, and Norway's government is now planning for the complete end of liquid fossil fuel retail within this decade.
The mechanism is simple and ruthless. As EVs reached 82% of new car sales in 2023, petrol stations serving a dwindling fleet of combustion vehicles became economically unviable. Fixed costs — land, equipment, staff, compliance — remain roughly constant regardless of fuel volume sold. As volume fell, unit economics collapsed. Circle K and Uno-X have closed hundreds of Norwegian stations. The infrastructure of the fossil fuel era is physically disappearing. What replaces it is already being built. Norway's Recharge network — the country's largest EV charging operator — has taken over many former fuel station sites, installing high-power EV chargers on the existing forecourt footprint. The economic logic mirrors the EV transition itself: the new infrastructure is cheaper to operate per vehicle served than the old infrastructure it displaces. AI is making Norwegian EV charging smarter than fuel stations ever were. Recharge's dynamic pricing algorithm adjusts charging prices in real time based on grid electricity costs, demand at individual stations, and drivers' battery states — routing charging demand across the network to prevent congestion and reduce costs. Drivers using the app can see predicted wait times and prices at every station on their route before they leave home. Norway did not just replace petrol cars with electric ones. It replaced an entire fossil fuel retail infrastructure with something cleaner, cheaper, and smarter. The fuel stations are closing. Nobody is mourning them. |

Interesting that Norway wealth is STILL tied to selling vast quantities of fossil fuels
