Title: Tesla model Y top selling car in Australia
Post by Baronvonrort on Jun 3rd, 2026 at 9:49pm

Quote:
The Tesla Model Y has become the first electric car to lead the overall Australian sales charts – across all fuel types – as high fuel prices drive a surge in demand for EVs and hybrids.

An electric vehicle (EV) has topped the Australian new-car sales charts for the first time in the third consecutive record month for the market share of battery-powered vehicles, amid a surge in demand driven by high fuel prices.

The Tesla Model Y reported a record 5605 sales in May 2026 to become the nation's top-selling car, ahead of the Ford Ranger (4474) and Toyota HiLux (4005) utes, and Toyota RAV4 hybrid SUV (3865).

Toyota remained Australia's top-selling new-car brand, its reported tally of 16,342 cars a decline of 30.7 per cent compared to the same month in 2025.

The Model Y's tally of 5605 registrations is a record result, however, and the first time it has led the Australian new-car sales charts outright.

It has previously finished second – behind the Ford Ranger in June 2023 – and topped the passenger vehicle charts, but never the overall leaderboard.

Interesting how FSD is improving all the time many said it couldn't work.

If i was looking for EV i would go Tesla the Cybertruck looks good can't be sold here as some question pedestrian safety.
When you see other US truck like Dodge Ram and big Chevvys how can they justify this?

Yesterday, I’m thinking I will stop into a big shopping outlet called Brand Smart in Nunawading since I’ve driven that far for other errands.
I wonder if I’ve made a wrong turn.
I saw this huge T Tesla looking quite looming!
Driving past all the new gym area, cars galore, I’m thinking must be heading in the right area.
I see all these are huge signs…Tesla parking etc.
And I go right to the end and what do I see….all display models of Teslas.

I park to get my bearings!
Feeling a bit intimidated amidst all these other Tesla cars in car park with my old Subaru.
I look up on phone where the outlet shopping centre … sadly it closed down  :'(

And I couldn’t get out of there quick enough….heart broken.

Those huge looming T signs look like bulls horns!
Far out!

^ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You need to get out more!

But yes, what a strange experience to find a shopping centre closed and taking over by a Telstra dealership!

Byd seems a more online experience that will direct you to “ show days”.

Saves rent $$$$ with a showroom on line and then they can just drive a demo to your house to try!

And if you like it then they will ship you a new one.

Last car I brought was online.

I just don’t have the time to go kick tyre around and hassle with sales staff.

Plus I always get a better price
