I had the misfortune of watching some AFL here in Perth yesterday, and the supposedly tough sporting warriors turned into little babies when someone did so much as step on their feet.

I played a game of soccer in my 20s. I recall running back to retrieve a ball that looked like it was going out of bounds. I was looking around to see if there was any opposition looking to win the race for the ball. No one was around. Just before the sideline, I managed to roll my left ankle and fell to the ground. Some of the crowd gave me a bit of abuse, some claiming that I took a dive. I got up fairly quickly, not all that injured and kept walking back to get the ball. As I came back into the field of play, the referee said "Don't even think of asking for a penalty" (or something to that effect). I simply said "I won't" and continued on with the game. After the game, I still received some heckles from people, asking me what happened then. I told them that I had rolled my ankle. And though people accepted that explanation there, there was still some talk that I took a dive. Later, it was proven that I tripped on a hole made from a divot from a dodgy spot kick that someone had taken. Added to that was the fact that the next game, some other player had also tripped in the same spot.

Even when you explain to people what happened, they want to believe some far-fetched accusation of poor sportsmanship.

they say silly things -
example -

the ball was crossed  in front of Iran's goal by the Kiwis and it was kicked a bit too far.

the announcer said the ball was hit too deep.


No it wasn't - deep means it's in Iran's territory but all the players
from both sides were there -
so it was in no one's territory  -
he just kicked it a bit far - past everyone.

How did that work out for you?

Socceroos fell back to their old ways of wanting to exhibit their 'tough masculinity' and violent physicality than just get on with the job. FIFA have warned refs about this in previous world cups. It's our bad reputation.
USA knew this and sucked Australia back into that old form.
If they had played passively and stoic, like against Turkey - they could have won.
