Title: Albo dodges the 94-seat question!
Post by Armchair_Politician on May 13th, 2026 at 6:56pm
Anthony Albanese has been pressed by ABC host Patricia Karvelas over his political tactics, putting it to the Prime Minister that the polls may have read differently in the last election if voters knew what they were backing.

Mr Albanese reiterated his talking points from yesterday, saying he believes Australians will get behind what he believes is a tactic to even out the scales … by taxing the younger generation of middle and working class taxpayers more on their meagre investments.

Workers who already pay over 30 per cent on the bulk of their income are now being slugged further for investing in their country via shares and ETFs, with once-favourable capital gains discounts set to be scaled back.

“This is doing the right thing for the right reasons. We made the decision to not kick this can down the road,” he said this afternoon.

“When (the housing problem) is getting worse, in spite of everything we’ve thrown at it, through our $47 billon Homes for Australia plan, clearly we needed to do more.

“People can continue to invest in property, but it has to be new housing.”

His spiel was cut short by a very pointed question from the ABC Insiders host.

“Would you have won 94 seats if you had taken this to the election?” Karvelas said.

Mr Albanese hit back immediately, putting it to the public broadcaster that she “was the commentator” and not him.

He deflected the question by saying he was “very confident”.

“We are arguing our case, and I believe the Australian people will support this sensible reform,” he said.

“If you look at what’s happening in society, what you can’t have is people being defined as those who are homeowners (or those who will inherit one) and those who are locked out — a generation.”

The Prime Minister then threw in something vague about having a “fair go”.

This is the period for difficult change, by the time of the next election it will be a non issue.

Labor are building a defence against the Greens ...

The Greens prioritise phasing out negative gearing and the 50% capital gains tax (CGT) discount to improve housing affordability, arguing these tax breaks disproportionately benefit wealthy investors and drive up house prices.

Greens have strong support amongst young voters.

Down the track, Labor will have policies to try and minimise support loss of conservative oldies to 1Nation.

He just can’t admit he has broken a core election promise…

Dim Tim gets carved  up.  This is the LNP Shadow Treasurer!  Source Unknown but I watched the exchange and this is pretty accurate!

"Tim Wilson got absolutely carved up today.Jim Chalmers puIIed out Wilson's own book the one where he wrote that Capital Gains Tak, where he admitted Capital Gains Tax was unfair and hitting young people hard. Wilson went quiet.

Dan Tehan tried to rescue him, but Jim just smiled and kept going. Then the Liberals tried to $hut down Jim. No chance. Wilson got burłed by his own lnk. Poetic, really

But Jim had more. Wilson was ranting about migration again, so Jim said when you blow that whistle, Goldstein hears it. Then Wilson let slip he'd sit with One Nation, and Jim said Goldstein heard that too. Devastating Tim Wilson is a walking contradiction. Makes him FlSH in a barreI for a Treasurer who actually reads.

They love high migration behind the scenes because it keeps wages low. Then they perform outrage on camera. It's theatre. Someone worked out the real trick go CENTRlST, not EXTR£ME. That's why the oId brigade is collecting DU$T

Tim Wilson reading numbers? It's a Dl$A$TER every time. The guy looks like he's seen a GH0$T. $weating, $tumbIing, like Jim is breathing down his neck keep at it, Jim. This is must watch. Honestly, better than anything on streaming.”

This is a pretty accurate synopsis of what happened when Dim Tim stood at the podium with a question for the Treasurer

I know some of you rusted on Labor supporters will say this is no different to the GST and Howard. But it is - Howard took his change of mind to an election and won. Albo did not.

Tell us all about Mr Abbott then?
Tony Abbott Administration (2013–2015)

Funding for Public Broadcasters: Promised “no cuts to the ABC or SBS”. The 2014 Federal Budget subsequently stripped $43.5 million from their combined budgets.Health and Education Budgets:

Campaigned on "no cuts to education, no cuts to health". The subsequent budget reduced planned long-term state funding allocations for schools and hospitals by a projected $80 billion.

Personal Income Taxes: Stated "no one's personal tax will go up". A temporary 2% Temporary Budget Repair Levy was introduced in 2014 for individuals earning over $180,000.

Superannuation Guarantee Increases: Promised no unexpected adverse changes to superannuation. The administration subsequently delayed scheduled increases to the superannuation guarantee rate until 2021.Indigenous Community Engagement:

Pledged to spend one week every year working out of a remote Indigenous community. He only completed a single four-day stint in Arnhem Land during his first year.

Infrastructure Assessment: Committed to publishing a cost-benefit analysis for every infrastructure project worth over $100 million before funding. The rule was broken by allocating $1 billion to Victoria's East West Link project without a prior published review

We could also discuss Mr Morrison and Mr Turnbull
NBN Disaster
French Submarines
AUKUS Disaster
Airport Land in Sydney
Robodebt
Ministerial Portfolios
Water Buyback
Medicare Local Office Closures

I am sure others can do far better than the list above.   People who live in glass houses...sort f stuff

Yeap, they all break election promises.

Apply moral outrage and crock tears, when there are political points to be scored.

All politicians are professional liars -
you can't trust anything they say.

They all dodge questions in question time in parliament.
The usual method is to talk about what the opposition did instead
of answering the question.
Albo did that yesterday.

Most, not all. A few are decent, such as Senator David Pocock etc.

Needle in a haystack kind of rare.

Ah on education - He cut back on labor's cut back of the Gonski plan. The Gonski plan that Labor wouldn't fund until after the 2013 election. ::)
