An extra 7,000 social housing properties will be built in Victoria in the coming decade, with an initial $860 million investment in the upcoming state budget, the Allan government has announced.   :)

More than 56,000 households are on a housing waiting list in Victoria, with even those deemed a priority facing average delays of 17 months, according to the most recent publicly available data.

Treasurer Jaclyn Symes said the May state budget would include an extra $860 million for the Social Housing Growth Fund, established in 2018 to pay community housing organisations to build and operate more properties.

"This will deliver even more social homes sooner, giving people in need a secure foundation," Ms Symes said.

More funding is expected beyond the forward estimates to meet the 7,000-home target.

Community Housing Industry Association chief executive Sarah Toohey said extra funding would be necessary in coming years to deliver the commitment, and that the government should be building thousands more a year to catch up with other states and territories.

Last year Infrastructure Victoria recommended the government commit to building 4,000 new homes a year for 15 years to make up the difference, saying social housing made up just 2.8 per cent of homes in Victoria compared to 4 per cent nationally.

"But you have to start somewhere," Ms Toohey said, welcoming the announcement as a significant investment.

"It's going to build 7,000 homes that we wouldn't have had otherwise.

"We'll work with the government to ensure they can invest more and build more to meet the needs of the community."
The government established the fund in 2018 with a $1 billion promise to add thousands of homes.

Ninety homes in St Albans and 73 in Bendigo are among the completed projects, though the government was unable to immediately confirm the total number that have been constructed.

The Victorian Labor government has weathered criticism for its focus on community housing over public housing, which is owned and run by the government.

The most vulnerable people tend to live in public housing, given community providers have the flexibility to choose their own tenants.

All 44 public towers in Melbourne will separately be razed and rebuilt by 2051, to increase the number of tenants from 10,000 to 30,000 across the estates.

However, the number of social tenants will only increase by 1,000, with the majority to be private and market rate housing.

Must be an election year.

And not just in Victoria. The problem is nationwide.

Governments all around Australia have been trying to get rid of public housing for decades, selling off as much as they could to community providers and private developers and badly neglecting the rest maintenance wise.

The idea apparently was for governments to get out of providing public housing altogether and instead relying on the private rental market to look after those who couldn't afford to buy their own home.

Only problem now is - greedy landlords and real estate agents have made private rentals so unaffordable (especially for someone on any sort of Centrelink pension or benefit) that people are now applying for public housing in large numbers - WA's waiting list has increased by about 2,000 in the past year or two going from about 21,000 applications to 23,000. And, they are just applications - the actual number of people waiting is a lot more with 2,3 or more people per family in many applications.

Of course having the government look after housing is the smartest thing to do. When the government is in charge things will be cheaper and easier. There will be less red tape, far more productivity and maintenance will be cheap and top notch. It should make housing far more affordable.

Once more unto the breach - "investment in housing" has failed to produce the goods, and instead of generating HOMING for the many, it has become nothing more than yet another transfer of public monies into private hand without real effort or earned merit.

The banks adore it - they reap higher rates of interest off the backs of the struggling Jo and Joe Bloggs striving to own a home for selves and family - such a 'business plan' cannot fall into divorce, famly disintegration (primarily due to economic pressures these days), untimely death or disability - a business plan, like cancer - goes on forever in one way or another.

Even in the event of 'collapse' which theoretically creates 'suffering' for the foolish bank .......... the endless chain of people owing or holding money to that 'failed business' persists until the bank winds it all up and gets back most of it anyway, leaving the small 'investor' who has staked life savings in one way or another - via deposit or actual shareholding - out in the cold.  On top of this the banks have already skimmed all the cream off the top of any loan via the repayment process, which takes much cream and a little milk every time.

Only the business organiser and the banks come out of it smelling like roses.

On top of that - our governments have bought into this farce of 'investment housing creating homes' on purpose - and not only for the reason that many politicians and fat cats are directedly involved as 'investors' in this artificially created 'market', and hold shares in the banks as well!! 

The prevailing view PERSISTS that 'what is good for business is good for Australia' - a total lie given the current realities for the many - and in regard to the banks, our government of two parties considers them to be the mainstay of the economy and 'too big to be allowed to fall due to their own malfeasance'.  Ergo - We The People, must foot the bills for them if they stuff up - as it is clear they never can actually do, since they live off the cream constantly!

In other words - the whole thing is a pack of lies written on cards and installed into a house of cards cemented irreversibly together over the will and intersts of the people.

Now mention mass immigration and its impact craters on everything in site..... devastating everything but the runway coming in.....

It could well be fake news but it doesn't matter.
No one cares about the truth and creating a post of an islamistist jumping the queue is a piece of cake.

The result is that governments will have to bend to the will of those who learn how to harness outrage.

It would be a very smart move for one nation to flood  social media with pictures of women oin burkhas relaxing on a lounge in a new apartment with jacinta allen photoshopped in.

Exactly. 

And this musso immigrant already had a social housing unit but wanted something better and closer to family.  She was given that unit even though she originally had a home with family whilst Australians - many with children and living in tents and cars are not considered a priority for housing and languish indefinitely on the lists because there is no housing.

Fat lot of good to Australia.  I thought immigration was supposed to be mutually beneficial.  But in this case, like far too many mussos, this disability pensioner is getting ALL the benefits without ever having made any contribution to our country.
