Mouse plague threatening Western Australia’s billion-dollar grain crop as numbers explode!

Let’s look at the positives.

Plague and pestilence is another sign of the End Times.

Matt  24   KJV

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled:
for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

Revelation 6:8    (NIV)

I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!
Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him.
They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword,
famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth

That's from a fictions book Bobby.
Mythology of primitive people, trying to explain away their world around them. It's outdated.

Thank goodness the Pisces Millennium is behind us. Aquarius Millennium is fact based.

Bye to cult religions.

Google AI:

house mice (Mus musculus) were brought into Australia, and they are considered an introduced, invasive species. They are not native to Australia and were introduced by European settlers, primarily arriving as stowaways on British ships, including the First Fleet, in 1788.

Key Facts About Mice in Australia:

Arrival History: While the First Fleet in 1788 is the most likely primary introduction point, mice may have also arrived on earlier Dutch ships.

Source Region: Genetic studies suggest that Australian house mice originate from Western Europe, specifically showing a strong link to the British Isles.

Distribution: Mice are now widespread across the continent, particularly in agricultural and urban areas.

Impact: They are a major agricultural pest, causing significant economic damage by destroying stored grain and chewing through infrastructure.

Mouse Plagues: Australia is one of the few places in the world where mice reach, on average every four years, plague proportions (up to 3,000 per hectare), often occurring in grain-growing regions.

Native vs. Introduced Mice
It is important to distinguish the introduced house mouse from native Australian mice (such as the hopping mouse) and native rodents. Native rodents have been in Australia for millions of years, whereas the house mouse has only been there since European colonization. The introduced house mouse is responsible for competing with and disrupting the habitats of these native species.

ai :

Yes, humans can eat mice, and they have been consumed in various cultures for centuries, particularly in parts of Africa (such as Malawi and Zambia) and Asia (such as Vietnam).  However, eating them is generally considered a last resort due to significant health risks.

...

Preparation: To make them safe, mice must be skinned, gutted, and cooked thoroughly (e.g., roasting, grilling, or stewing) to kill pathogens.  Some sources suggest eating them whole if cooking immediately after capture to minimise exposure to internal contaminants

Mice plagues are a common phenomenon.

The country has been dealing with them for nearly 200 years.

Just as they do with the native Australian Plague Locust.

The only difference being the mice(house mouse) is introduced.

Are you fair dinkum?

As I said we have been dealing with them in Australia for nearly 200 years.

The rest of the globe has been dealing with rat, mice & locust plagues since biblical time - thousands of years.

If it was a sign of End Times - why the phark are we still here?

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

are figures from the New Testament’s Book of Revelation (Chapter 6), interpreted as divine messengers or harbingers of doom at the end of times. They ride white, red, black, and pale horses, symbolizing Conquest, War, Famine, and Death, respectively, unleashed when the first four seals are broken.

White Horse (Conquest/Antichrist): Riders on this horse often represent conquest, imperialism, or religious deception. The rider is given a bow and a crown.

Red Horse (War): Symbolizes civil war, strife, and conflict. The rider carries a sword, representing destruction.

Black Horse (Famine): Symbolizes hunger and scarcity. The rider carries a pair of scales, representing the rationing of food.

Pale Horse (Death): The final rider represents death, often followed by Hades, and can represent pestilence or pandemics.

By all reports the locust have had a perfect breeding season and soon to let fly.

Rabbits have also enjoyed a favourable breeding season and ready to take our crops.

Being a positive person I can guarantee even though fire ants  now have a strong and growing foothold on the east coast of Australia no politician will mention their abject failure in defending what eventually be the greatest failure by boarder security in the history of Australia.

Air rifles like PCP (Compressed air) are good for these critters.

.22Lr has too much for using in sheds puts holes in everything.

This setup with thermal scope isn't cheap i doubt any buyback would even come close to cost price.

It's why I don't like farms -

all the rats, mice, possums, roos & insects want to eat all your crops and
the snakes want to bite you.
In Victoria the snakes are all deadly from one bite.

“ Dry conditions in the Northern Tablelands are beginning to bite, turning paddocks into dust.
Farmers around Ashford haven't seen decent rain in months and say they're worried about how they'll get through the weeks heading into winter. “

Controlling kangaroos:

Google AI:

Farmers use a combination of methods to stop kangaroos from eating crops, ranging from physical barriers and electric fencing to non-lethal deterrents and, where necessary and legally permitted, lethal control. Because kangaroos are highly mobile and intelligent, an integrated approach combining several strategies is typically the most effective.

Here are the main strategies used:

1. Fencing and Physical Barriers

High Exclusion Fencing: Wire mesh, chain mesh, or prefabricated fences (like Hingejoint™) that are at least 1.5 to 1.8 meters high can prevent kangaroos from entering paddocks.
Electric Fencing: Highly effective when properly installed, often using two or more hot wires at different heights (e.g., 600mm and 1.2m) to deliver a deterrent zap, discouraging them from jumping or pushing through.

Fencing Visibility: White electric tape or netting is added to the top of fences to make them more visible, reducing the likelihood of kangaroos crashing into them at night and getting entangled.

Tree Guards: Individual young plants and trees are protected with plastic, mesh, or wire guards until they are large enough to withstand browsing.

2. Non-Lethal Deterrents
Livestock Guardian Dogs: Maremma dogs, often used for sheep, are effective at patrolling boundaries and keeping kangaroos away from areas.

Scare Tactics: Motion-activated sprinklers, strobe lights, and loud noise devices (like gas guns) can disrupt feeding patterns, though kangaroos can sometimes become accustomed to these.
Reflective Tape/CDs: Hanging reflective objects can act as a visual disturbance.
Smelly Repellents: Spraying strong-smelling substances like urea, blood and bone, or commercial odor-based repellents can discourage browsing, though these often require frequent reapplication.

3. Habitat and Property Management
Reducing Attractants: Keeping lawns, grass, and fodder crops short around high-value areas can make the area less attractive for grazing.
Water Management: Removing or fencing off artificial water points and using stock-activated troughs can discourage them from settling near crops.

Strategic Planting: Placing crops further away from bushland, which is their natural shelter.

4. Legal Culling
Authority to Control Wildlife (ATCW): In Australia, kangaroos are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. Farmers must apply for permits to legally shoot them.
Lethal Control: Culling is generally considered a "band-aid" solution that is most effective when part of a broader, long-term management strategy (such as fencing).

Anything that a sheep can feed on is also palatable to kangaroos. Stock-activated troughs? How would that work? How would the controller differentiate between stock and kangaroos (just stock of a different sort)?

it's very difficult to fight off Kangaroo pests.

Then there are: rats, mice, possums and insects too.   ::)

Well yes - farming creates millions of tons of food -
no wonder it causes plagues of pests.

In the city of Melbourne - I don't know anyone with a fruit tree
that hasn't been ravaged by possums and giant fruit bats.

I was going to mention snakes. Even if they eat 2 mice per day, the snakes are going to have a lot of leftovers. Snake populations would just explode.
