They'd be better to accept The Homeland and stage gladiator fights Wadeye style to draw in the crowds... FIFO tourists paying top dollar to see traditional fights etc...

It’s not a joke, every time the wind gets up the stuff spreads further, if the mining companies can’t be forced to clean up (probably long since gone into liquidation, or otherwise legally shirked their responsibilities), then it’s up to the WA Government to clean up.

The bloody mine closed in 1966 - 60 years ago so I'd go along with that, that the Govt should do something but from what I've read it will be a monumental task.

And there's no way in the world they should be giving $1.5 billion in compensation to the local Aboriginal group. It would be blown in no time flat.

It's not just Aboriginals that can't use the area & it will not clean up the tailings and make the area safe for use ..... so the problem will persist & it will remain a restricted  lock out area.

Any moneys should put toward some form of remediation of the area.

I agree any moneys should only go remediation .
One solution would be reverse mining, putting the tailings back into the mine, then sealing and revegitating.

Barraba had or has the same blue 'sbestos.

I don' see why remediation work hasn't been done.  Lot of low-knowlege decisions made in the past, that only come clear as time goes by.

Cut your balls off today and hey, presto - no nuts tomorrow...

Wadeye Colosseum etc isn't a joke either - but it's one way to earn a dollar.
