Police have arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct in public office, Thames Valley Police said Thursday.

Police arrived at Mountbatten-Windsor’s home in Sandringham, north of London, according to UK media reports.

Police had previously said they were assessing evidence in relation to revelations in the so-called Epstein files.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The arrest comes after the US government released files that appeared to indicate he had shared official information with financier and convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a trade envoy for the UK. But the police have not given details of exactly what they are investigating.

It is important to be clear that the arrest is not related to accusations of sexual assault or misconduct. In 2022, Mountbatten-Windsor reached a settlement with the late Virginia Giuffre for an undisclosed sum that did not include an admission of liability.

Being named in the Epstein files is not an indication of misconduct. Mountbatten-Windsor has previously denied any wrongdoing in his association with Epstein and and has previously rejected any suggestion he used his time as trade envoy to further his own interests.

What was Mountbatten-Windsor’s official role and why did he lose it?
In 2001, Tony Blair’s government made the then-prince the UK’s special representative for trade and investment. According to the government at the time, his remit was to “promote UK business internationally, market the UK to potential inward investors, and build relationships in support of UK business interests”. He did not receive a salary, but he did go on hundreds of trips to promote British businesses.

Royal biographer Andrew Lownie says former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was allegedly leaking defence and military secrets during his time in public office.

PM volunteered Australia's support to remove Mountbatten-Windsor from succession

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed his desire for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to be removed from the line of succession.

"I certainly do [want him removed] and I think Australians will as well. These are very serious allegations. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will face the full force of the law. His Majesty, King Charles, has said that and the law must now take its full course," he told ABC's AM.

The prime minister says he voluntarily wrote to his UK counterpart Keir Starmer and texted him give him warning the letter was on the way.

"We engaged and he thanked me for our position," he says.

Any amendment to the line of succession would need to be initiated by the UK and then the 14 realm countries in the Commonwealth would have to agree.

"That's a process that obviously takes time," he says.

Albanese has also written to the state and territory leaders as any change must also receive the agreement from the states and territories.

The PM adds he'll also write to other realm countries such as Canada and New Zealand today.

"Australia likes being first and we make sure that everyone knows what our position is."
