Answer:  because he considered Jews in his time had turned away from the OT prophets (Jews had even killed some of them back in the OT days) who had preached the religion of the 'One True God" - for which Muhammad considered himself the last true Prophet (after Jesus...)

People invent new sects or religions all the time. We know how it works. But no-one claiming to be a new Jewish or Christian prophet would also incorporate slaughtering all the Christians and Jews in their revelations. Unless they understood that what they were creating was a new religion.

I already exposed your error: The Prophet considered he was reaffirming the religion of the OT prophets - which had been spurned by Jews, according to his understanding of  history.

Same as above: his followers were worshippers of the One True God  (Allah - Jehovah) , whom Jews had rebelled against, according to the Prophet's undestanding of history.
