Title: Huge solar storm here soon Post by Bobby. on Jan 20th, 2026 at 12:05pm https://edition.cnn.com/2026/01/19/science/largest-solar-radiation-storm-auroras Sun releases the largest solar radiation storm ‘in over 20 years,’ forecasters say Updated 4 hr ago Powerful solar activity released by the sun is heading for Earth and it’s likely to create dazzling auroral displays in unexpected areas Monday evening and early Tuesday morning. It could also disrupt satellite-based communications and GPS accuracy. A solar radiation storm, ranked at a level four out of five on a severity scale, is being tracked by the National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center, or SWPC. “An S4 severe solar radiation storm is now in progress - this is the largest solar radiation storm in over 20 years,” SWPC shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The last time S4 levels were observed was in October, 2003. Potential effects are mainly limited to space launch, aviation, and satellite operations.” |

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a rare alert that a "severe geomagnetic storm" is in progress, which may be seen in nearly every state. It is the strongest solar radiation storm in over 20 years, since October 2003. The powerful weather event is expected to trigger the stunning aurora Australis, also known as the southern lights. And Swinburne astrophysicist Dr Kirsten Banks told Yahoo News Australia this alert in particular is "very exciting". |

Polar Lights is when berserk goes really mad, good to trigger Ragnarok.

Is it the End Times? Ragnarök (or Ragnarok) is the prophesied "Twilight of the Gods" in Norse mythology, a cataclysmic end-of-world event involving a great battle, natural disasters, and the death of major gods, leading to the world's submersion and eventual rebirth, with survivors repopulating a cleansed Earth. |

If it turns into a Carrington Event we won't have electricity for months. |

Like in "good old times" ;) Seriously though, pedal generator for lights and portable radio communication can be used but have to be simple without microcircuits. Most of modern vehicles will be stuffed. |

When we've had previous internet outages the petrol stations wouldn't work - no one could get petrol. We are too reliant on electronics. |

Yes, never should forget old ways like siphon hose and gravity feed from 44gal drums. |

Well - the petrol stations don't run like that and never will. They should have back up batteries for the fuel pumps and we should be able to pay by cash when the cash register is down. They can't do either now. Our preparation for a Carrington Event is zero. |

We used to pick up few dozens 44gal drums from fuel depot when going to bush for a month or three. It is better to be ready then sorry. I think even in over-civilized Victoria farmers still have big fuel storage tanks for to keep machinery going without traveling to town too often. |

I used to do it on old CRT TVs with a magnet and fix it with "magic wand" saying "abrakadabra" 8-)

Actually it is phosphorus molecules start to radiate when hit by fast moving electrons. Magnetic field is used to direct electron stream. |

A magnetic field is used to steer the beam but it won't work well on a color screen if that screen is magnetised. Google AI: Color CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) televisions and monitors were equipped with a built-in degaussing coil. Purpose: The coil was designed to remove unwanted magnetization from the metal shadow mask inside the picture tube. How it Worked: It created an alternating magnetic field that decreased in amplitude, effectively "degaussing" the tube every time the TV was turned on from a cold start. Significance: Without this, stray magnetic fields (including Earth's magnetic field) could cause color distortion, or "color impurity," which appeared as patches of wrong colors on the screen. Sounds/Symptoms: When turning on a CRT TV, a distinct "whoomp" or buzzing sound is often heard, which is the degaussing coil activating for a few seconds. Limitations: If the internal coil failed, or if the magnetic distortion was too severe (e.g., from a nearby speaker), an external handheld degaussing coil or "wand" was required to fix the color issues. |

I still have this "magic wand", on early large colour tubes I also had to place little magnets on the back of tube to do rough adjustment first. |
