Title: Bacon ain't Australian Post by John_Taverner on Jan 19th, 2026 at 4:36pm
At least the bacon you get in the supermarkets is mostly from overseas. If you read the label, it usually says sourced from at least 15% Australian ingredients. That figure normally refers to the brine, which is Australian. The pork comes from North America and Europe.
Try to find some bacon that is 100% Australian in the supermarket. I managed to find one in Coles - only one among many (not Primo) Read the labels. - and all this while Australian pig farmers are going bankrupt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSJrmS4fl14 |

Australian bacon is there if you look for it. Can be hard to find sometimes because it keeps selling out.

Good call. Australian packaged bacon is identified as such but is often absent in supermarkets. A good bet is to buy from a local deli or butcher you know and trust. Another advantage of this is that the bacon is not sitting in brine in a plastic package before it gets to you. |

I’ve been avoiding bacon for eons because of the nitrates.
But will look for those recommended ones to support Australian families so we can treat ourselves to some decent bacon occasionally. On cruise ships, at breakfast time, I noticed the amount of bacon and eggs consumed far outweighed the cauldron of porridge I went for! How boring am I, a little bowl of porridge. ;D I’m funny about eggs as I don’t know if it’s free range or not. So I avoid eggs when away from home. What’s interesting about egg prices is it went up to about $12 a dozen but now it’s come down to $8 a dozen. I also buy organic real butter, none of this margarine stuff. |
