Greens senator’s lobbyist husband gets free pass on $50k of taxpayer-funded flights

A watchdog review of Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young’s expenses did not investigate the almost $50,000 she billed taxpayers to regularly fly her lobbyist husband to Canberra, where he works.

Hanson-Young became embroiled in the spending saga when it was revealed she had charged taxpayers $49,902 for flights to Canberra for Oquist, a senior lobbyist for lobby firm DPG Solutions, whose clients include Wesfarmers, Rio Tinto and Catholic Education.

IPEA’s report into Hanson-Young’s expenses said it had flagged for further investigation two interstate trips with a family member. The watchdog requested details from the senator, but was ultimately satisfied with the evidence and explanation she provided.

One of those was a trip to the Gold Coast in 2023, for which Hanson-Young claimed flights, ground transport and three nights’ accommodation, the report said.

The prime minister's office approved last-minute flight changes for Communications Minister Anika Wells and two staffers that cost taxpayers almost $100,000, Anthony Albanese has confirmed amid an ongoing expenses furore.

Ms Wells has been under fire since it emerged during Senate estimates she had spent $94,827 on three business-class flights to New York, where she delivered a speech on the incoming social media ban on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

She was initially scheduled to travel with the prime minister for the September meeting, but delayed her departure when news of the Optus Triple Zero (000) outage broke.

The minister has repeatedly defended her spending, insisting it falls within the guidelines, as the Coalition called for an independent review of her expenses.

70% of the men in office are also chubby. It is almost normal for older people to gain a few pounds. Being a little overweight isn't in the top 20 reasons to be critical of any politician.
