‘We have to have it’: Trump renews push for Greenland as Denmark protests

US president cites national security as rationale for his efforts to take control of the self-governing Arctic island.

United States President Donald Trump has stepped up his campaign to take over Greenland, declaring the Danish territory essential to Washington’s national security and appointing a special envoy he said would “lead the charge”.

Trump’s comments on Monday came as the leaders of Denmark and Greenland protested against remarks by the new envoy, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who said he would make the Arctic territory “a part of the US”.

Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, Trump reiterated his position that Greenland is vital to US defence interests.

“We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals,” the US president said. “If you take a look at Greenland, you look up and down the coast, you have Russian and Chinese ships all over the place… We have to have it.”

The remarks followed Trump’s Sunday announcement of Landry’s appointment, in which he praised the governor for understanding “how essential Greenland is to our national security”.

Landry subsequently posted on X that it was “an honour to serve… in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US”, adding that the role would not affect his gubernatorial duties.

Landry’s statement drew a sharp rebuke from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who issued a joint statement asserting that “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders”.

“You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security,” they said. “The US shall not take over Greenland.”

Nielson wrote separately on Facebook that the US moves “may sound big, but it does not change anything for us”. “We decide our own future,” he said.

Frederiksen added in an Instagram post, “It is a difficult situation that our allies for a lifetime are putting us in.”

Earlier on Monday, Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he would summon US envoy Kenneth Howery to express his country’s deep anger over Landry’s appointment. Rasmussen also called the governor’s comments on annexing Greenland “totally unacceptable”.

The Trump administration also put further pressure on Copenhagen on Monday, when it suspended leases for five large offshore wind projects being built off the East Coast of the US, including two being developed by Denmark’s state-controlled Orsted.

The European Union, meanwhile, swiftly rallied behind Denmark.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa declared “full solidarity” with Copenhagen and emphasised that “territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law”.

Trump, who returned to the White House in January, has repeatedly declared that the US “needs” the resource-rich island and declined to rule out the use of military force to secure it.

The self-governing territory, which lies between Europe and North America, hosts a key US ballistic missile defence system and has substantial mineral deposits, which could reduce US reliance on Chinese exports.

According to an opinion poll conducted in January, the vast majority of Greenland’s 57,000 people want to become independent from Denmark, but they do not wish to become part of the US.

Greenland is the size of SA and the NT combined, with a population of Wagga Wagga.

It could never be an independent country.

French propose to give up Greenland without resistance in exchange for unconditional protection for Ukraine

Will French arrest King Frederik X and Queen Mary if Denmark refuse to give Greenland?

If so: should Australia protest as Queen Mary is Australian born?

The French are daft, once again.

Germany's unconditional protection of Austria and Russia's unconditional protection of Serbia led to WWI.

Greenland is an island of spongers who will sell out to any country.
Trump is just putting in his bid at the ongoing Auction.

The Inuit are racists too. They want their tobacco and grog from other countries but don't want white people living there.

If Donald doesn't arrest Greenland, some other crim will grab it. The population of Mar a Lago will be overjoyed when Greenland is liberated.

Watch those Greenland Inuit programs on NITV and they express their dislike of white Norse Denmark feeding them and providing for them.

No greater tell that you're waving a white flag than your quick jump to personal attacks and insults.

You surrender quicker than a tiny dog set free in a dog park who rolls over and pisses on his own belly when face to face with a bigger dog.

It will never ever happen, no matter how much Trump complains. Denmark is part of NATO and there's no way Trump will move against an ally in NATO. There's more chance of Trump jumping from the roof of the White House than him invading or taking over Greenland.

The  arctic is being extensively colonized by the Chinese and the russians.
Trumps duty is to safeguard american access to the minerals and resources of the arctic.
He offered to buy greenland.

Sounds like a very strategic move

He has Alaska as a state. Otherwise, Airport Road, Maine is his northern boundary. Trump Tower is his. Venezuela and Greenland belong to another guy. Federal law says larceny, broadly defined as stealing property is wrongful taking.

Please explain?

Oh?! It 'belongs to, eh? Colonialism hasn't ended too soon after all.

Salute the master, paki..

The Order of the Elephant is complete with jigaboo. That's the spirit. Holger Danske.

No no, I asked you which country Greenland belongs to.

Please explain?

Belongs to in the colonial sense, paki arse sniffer.

There is no other sense in which it can 'belong', ya gibbering paki.

Suddenly, you are all for colonialism continuing.

Thank you for standing up for Danish colonialism, paki.  Ten rupee and a banana. Have two.

Sorry, are you saying you won't say which country Greenland belongs to, or you can't?

Why would that be, Frank?

You were grimacing inconsolably when I said colonialism ended too soon.

Now you are very eager for Danish colonialism to continue and NOT end.

Thank you for your support, paki, I will always remember it. It can be hard to justify colonialism in this age but you and I agree for once - Danish colonialism is a GOOD THING.

Thank you.

You can't give a straight answer, can you?

I do feel you may have English as a second language. It's the only explanation one can assume for your verbose incredulity.

May one ask which country you're from?

Cheers.

Are blind, not just a stupid arse sniffer, paki??

You really don't want to provide a simple answer, do you?

Look, I'm curious. Why are you highlighting verbs and playing no-speaka? Why won't you provide a simple answer to the question?

Is there something you're trying to to hide here?

Danish is not a verb, illiterate no-speaka paki.
Not even in Urdu.

Good point, dear boy, it's an adjective. University of Balogney, innit.

We'll start again. What's the correct noun?

"The US cannot harm us more than Denmark has done" - Leader of the opposition in Greenland

Quote:
Discussions of US force in the Arctic following the Trump administration's intervention in Venezuela are exaggerated, and fears about US plans for Greenland say more about Denmark than about Washington's intentions, said Pele Broberg, leader of Greenland's only opposition party, Naleraq.

Broberg spoke to Euractiv after weeks of harsh rhetoric about US ambitions in Greenland, fueled by statements from figures close to US President Donald Trump. The US leader has expressed interest in exercising control over Greenland, a self-governing territory within EU and NATO member Denmark.

After Greenland held elections in March, center-right politician Jens-Frederik Nielsen built a coalition to lead the local government. Broberg's Naleraq party is the only party in parliament that did not join, despite winning 24% of the vote

We can see Europe's over-reach at first base for starters.

Denmark should end it's occupation of North America.

'One analysis placed the total value of Greenland's resources (including oil/gas, though exploration is banned) at around $200 billion, with specific minerals like coal, chromium, and feldspar valued in the billions'.

There should be no surprise about Trump's expansion. The US has invaded and colonised Pacific Islands (Hawaii, Philippines, Guam, etc) and Puerto Rico etc. It bought territory from other colonial powers and now assumes regime change is the US privilege in any (weaker) country. The US is an empire blowing the trumpets of democracy and has been since the 13 British settlements expanded into Indian proclaimed lands. If Trump gains acreage then that makes his empire greater in area.

Well, the US defended Greenland against Nazi Germany when Denmark and Norway were occupied.

The US has a military presence in cooperation with Denmark (not NATO).

China is interested in Greenland for its natural resources. As is the EU for the same reason. The EU relies on China for rare earth needed for the European defence industry.

The US will not invade Greenland militariy as long as China is kept away. The moment Greenland or Denmark opens the door to China the US will seize Greenland. But that scenario (Greenland or Denmark preferencing China over the US) is very unlikely although not impossible.

The Greenland issue is brought to you by the words 'strategic' and 'competition' and the number 57,000 (the popuation of Greenland and Wagga Wagga).

Thank you for supporting Danish colonialism.

I'm not supporting anything other than the fact that Trump should not act against Greenland in any way - especially militarily.

We know you don't like questions, dear boy, but kindly inform the leftards here whether you support your DL seizing Greenland.

Cheers.

Interesting question.

But perhaps Trump can avoid the ire of the 'woke' world by taking a leaf out of Xi's book, eg, Xi intends to reunite Taiwan with China - by force if necessary, the catalyst for which will be a DPP declaration of independence which the US and most of the UN won't support, and Trump himself wants to avoid WW3.

Otoh, Trump already has military bases in Greenland  - a NATO territory, so he doesn't need to declare sovereignty over Greenland.

If the US makes a move on Greenland, Germany, the UK and other NATO allies have to fight them, if they don't it effectively signals the end of NATO.

It's effectively Russia's wet dream.

If Trump goes ahead with this he's effectively cutting ties with the rest of the world.

It will cause irreparable damage to the US and destabilise the entire global economy and global stability.

We knew Trump would be an insane lunatic but even this is worse than even the most dire positions.

Yet the faithful idiots keep cheering this on.

You're calling me deranged, yet you're casually endorsing the idea of Trump seizing Greenland as if it's trivial.

That leaves two possibilities. Either you're so ignorant of what's actually at stake that you don't even grasp the consequences, or you do grasp them and simply don't care, because cult loyalty demands you defend whatever Trump does, no matter how reckless or destructive it is.

This misses the point of NATO entirely.

NATO isn't a mercenary air force Europe "borrows" from the US. It's a mutual defence treaty. If the US becomes the aggressor, especially against a NATO-adjacent territory like Greenland via Denmark, the entire legal and political logic of the alliance breaks.

Yes, US air power is formidable. That's irrelevant. NATO isn't about who has the biggest planes, it's about trust, deterrence, and shared commitments. Once the US shows it's willing to invade or annex allied territory, it ceases to be the alliance's anchor and becomes its primary risk.

At that point NATO doesn't "clutch pearls", it fractures. Europe doesn't need to outgun the US to respond, it needs to stop relying on it, rearm independently, and build security structures that exclude an unpredictable and hostile Washington.

If your argument is "America is too powerful to be constrained by alliances", congratulations, you've just described the behaviour NATO was created to defend against.

The difference is that this time it isn't a dictator-led communist superpower. It's Donald Trump, and it's the United States itself that has become the threat to global stability.

A lot of you MAGA types here are going to owe a great many people an apology for the abuse you hurled at them during the election, when you were warned that Trump would govern like a dictator. Those warnings weren't hysterical, they were accurate.

You're a dreamer.
The US has a $trillion dollar defence budget -
their air force now has built up over the last 50 years and more.
Europe can't ever hope to match the Yanks.
They need the Yanks - now more than ever before
and Trump knows it,
so he know he can get away with taking Greenland.

and no other job to go to.

Take off the blinkers, pal. Your 'it's only' and 'nothing more' stance is idiotic and reeks of TDS.

Defence & Security

Missile defense & space monitoring
The US operates Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base), which hosts radar systems critical to missile detection, space tracking and homeland defence.

Control of key sea lanes
Greenland anchors the GIUK Gap (Greenland–Iceland–UK), a strategic chokepoint used to monitor naval and submarine movement between the Arctic and Atlantic.

Great power competition
As Russia and China expand their Arctic presence, the US sees Greenland as key to maintaining Western influence and limiting rivals’ access to Arctic resources and infrastructure.

Longstanding military role
Greenland has been central to US defence strategy since World War II and the Cold War, a role now growing as Arctic tensions rise.

Strategic Arctic location
Greenland sits between North America and Europe, along the shortest routes for missiles and aircraft, making it vital for early warning and surveillance

Natural Resources

Rare earth elements & critical minerals
Essential for electronics, renewable energy, batteries, electric vehicles, and military technology — areas where the US wants to reduce reliance on China.

Uranium & industrial metals
Significant uranium, iron and base metal reserves could support nuclear energy, defence needs and large-scale manufacturing.

Oil and gas potential
Offshore Arctic regions may contain oil and natural gas, offering long-term energy security, though development is difficult and controversial.

Freshwater & renewable energy
Greenland’s ice sheet contains vast freshwater reserves, alongside strong hydropower and wind potential as the climate warms

The US Virgin Islands used to be called the Danish West Indies. THe Gunea cost in Africa was called the Danish Gold Cost before it was sold to the British in 1850.

The Danish West Indies were bought for $25 Million a hundred years ago because strategically these islands were more important for the US at the time than Greenland due to teir proximity to the panama canal. Part of the deal was the US ceding the whole  of Greenland to Denmark.

After WWII the US wanted to buy Greenland because of its strategic position for interccontinental  bombers flying between te Soviet Union and the US. Instead of selling it outright, Denmark facilitated a bilateral agreement giving the US military access.   So strategic interest in Greenland predates economic interests by decades.

After moving to an island off the coast of western Iceland, Erik the Red had a dispute with a man named Thorgest over some prized wooden beams. Erik took the beams back by force, and some oil in barrels, which led to a fight. This resulted in Erik being declared an outlaw and banished from Iceland for three years by the local Congress (Althingi), a common punishment for manslaughter in Norse society.
During his three-year exile from Iceland around 982 AD, Erik the Red decided to sail west to a land that had been sighted earlier but never successfully colonized. He explored the ice-free fjords and coastal meadows of the new land, which he named "Greenland" as a marketing ploy to attract future settlers, hoping the appealing name would entice people to join him in his real estate empire.  His son was Donald the Orange.

Impossible. Frank likes Danish.

He's a true patriot, you see. Frank refuses to assimilate here because he loves the Motherland ever so. It's core to his superior culture, his virtue, his entire way of being, always absolutely never ever.

U.S.  in 1917 issued a declaration recognizing Danish sovereignty over all of Greenland, solidifying Denmark's claim to the entire island for centuries.  Never 'ceded' by US.

Analogy - telling your boss to go and get stuffed
when you have a mortgage and a wife and kids to look after -
and no other job to go to.

If DL takes Greenland, NATO's over, Bobby.

The US joins Chi-na and Russia Russia Russia in a new arrangement to divvie up the globe.

In your preferred course of action, this leaves Australia stuck precariously in the Pacific, just another bare butt in the showers.

Is this what you want?

Would you prefer the Chows used lube?
