Title: China put tariffs on AUS beef.
Post by Leroy on Jan 1st, 2026 at 12:24pm

Quote:
China has announced a new raft of trade measures to protect its domestic beef industry.
These include an added 55 per cent tariff on beef imports that exceed quotas from several countries, including Australia.
The Australian Meat Industry Council says the measures could cost the industry about $1 billion.

So much for a free trade agreement with cheating, lying bullies.

It will lower our beef prices so that's good.

The Chinese don't deserve our top beef.

How? The beef is sold at auction. The middlemen take their cut, then the slaughterhouses, and of course the transports. Unless you think the Chinese are paying top dollar.

Supply and demand -

the more supply - less demand, causes the price to go down.

Little bit more complex with livestock Bobby, if demand drops then they keep their livestock and don't sell them creating a supply shortage which drives up the price.

There will be more supply at the saleyards so prices will go down for farmers who will take a big hit.

The middlemen and retailers shouldn't be impacted business as usual.

If you think prices will go down at the supermarkets you might be delsuional we have seen this happen before.

I was watching the news yesterday and the subject of american tarrifs on aussie beef came up.   It seems like the tarrifs had no effect on our exports and Americans were willing to pay whatever they had to pay to enjoy a quality product.  In the meantime, we went out and found new markets.  This is what our Politicians, Farmers and Corporations should be doing all time - looking for new markets and taking advantage of them - rather than wringing our hands and crying foul when another Country cracks a wobbler.

If China wants it’s people to pay more for our beef then look elsewhere!   Trade with China has always been perilous - in spite of any free trade or other agreements and there must be better and more stable export opportunities elsewhere.

So just like the lobster and wine ban we can expect meat exports to Hong Kong to increase x 3000%?
