Early settlers in north NSW had dragon problems. Bundjalung magil means 'Dragon (Eastern Water Dragon) Physignathus  leseuerii.'  'Moggill Creek was named after the water Dragon – Magil in the local Yuggera (Jagera) Nation language' of Brisbane.

Old Java language of Indonesia has: mahāgila  'a kind of sea-monster' which possibly became magil for smaller variants. The Javanese hero Bhima fought a dragon in the Southern Ocean.

It's possible that suspected shark attacks were by a mahagila, from Sanskrit words meaning 'great swallowing'. The number of sailing-ship wrecks is also suspicious.
