https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-10-05/man-arrested-after-shooting-in-sydney-croydon-park/105854454

In short:
A 60-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly firing a number of shots from a residential premises in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Croydon Park.

One man in his 50s suffered chest and neck wounds and was transported to hospital in a critical condition.

What's next?
Police are continuing investigations.

He told reporters it was unclear exactly how many shots were fired "but there could have been anywhere
between 50 and 100 shots that have been discharged".

Looks like this offender didn't have a license guns were unregistered.

To buy ammo in NSW you need to show registration papers proving you have a legal firearm that requires that specific ammo.

Some reports say it was a semi auto due to rapid fire.

If the guns we’re licensed we’d know by now as Firearms Registry would have all the details.

Sydney father Artemios Mintzas identified as alleged Croydon Park gunman
06 / 10 / 2025

The Greek Herald

The man accused of opening fire on pedestrians, drivers and officers in Sydney’s inner west has been identified as 60-year-old Artemios Mintzas.

Mintzas, who lived alone in a Croydon Park apartment, allegedly fired dozens of high-calibre rounds from his window on Sunday evening, injuring 16 people and striking several cars, including a police vehicle.

He was arrested after a two-hour siege, treated for minor injuries, and is now in police custody awaiting firearm charges.

Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry said the operation was “highly dangerous” and praised officers for their swift response, adding it was “incredible nobody was killed”.

Mintzas, a Sydney Trains employee and father of two, has no known criminal record or links to organised crime or terrorism. Detectives are investigating his motive and how he obtained the .30-calibre rifle used in the attack.

Premier Chris Minns condemned the violence, calling it unacceptable in NSW.

a .303 British bullet can penetrate 1/3rd of an inch (approximately 8.5mm) of steel.

If it was a .30 cal as reported - it sounds like an M1 Carbine. pop.. pop.. pop... no popwowww .you can hear a high velocity round in the air when it is fired ....  POSSIBLY an SKS 7.62 - same diameter....but definitely a lower velocity round used.

An M1 Carbine .30 cal in flesh is pretty nasty ... the report said .30 cal... the range was close... he was a poor shot or drunk...

Could be - good point.  I wouldn't respond to a rifleman with a pistol... only if there was nothing else... and no street cop is going to tackle a gunman in a raised position with a pistol - that's what the SOG are for with their HKs and stuff... in which case you'd hear roller bolt brrrr after BANG as the door goes down (depending on how it is done - could be BOOM BOOM BOOM on the hinges and catch with a heavy gauge shotgun solid shot - faster than a bam bam weight but a line of C4 could do it, but that takes time to set up) and then flash bangs to confuse and blind and immobilise the perp.....

Semi auto for sure - not even Lee Harvey Oswald can recycle a bolt that fast... (snide comment - Oswald didn't do it)...

I would go with SKS (Chinese AK47) in 7.62x39 going from size of bullet holes.
I don't like 7.62x39 it's slow lots of drop and piss poor BC.

We imported over 300K of them before 1996 didn't see that many handed in back in 1996.
They were around $399 back in 1994.

Old guy no glasses Iron sights with a rifle that wasn't very accurate to begin with might explain the luck people had in being missed.

Unlicensed unregistered so instead of cracking down on illegal firearms the government is likely to further restrict licensed firearm owners to give the appearance they're doing something.

Crime figure Mick Gatto fined over discovery of loaded shotgun in ensuite

Melbourne gangland figure Mick Gatto has been fined $2,500 for keeping a shotgun hidden at his home for more than ten years because he feared for his life.

The Heidelberg Magistrates Court heard that police found a loaded sawn-off shot gun concealed in a cavity behind a cabinet in the ensuite of Gatto's home while executing a search warrant over an unrelated matter in February.

They also found a box of shotgun cartridges and two boxes of ammunition.

His lawyer Sean Cash said the 60-year-old got the unregistered weapon in late 2005

Sawn off shotguns cannot be registered.

$2500 fine for having an illegal firearm isn't going to hurt a millionaire like Gatto.

Do the gun grabbers ever say we should have tougher laws for illegal firearms like mandatory jail terms?

They should be jailed... Labor would oppose it.

SKS good for very close quarters... but essentially a piece of shot worthy of a mass attack.  Hardly a sniper rifle..  Long ago I said I would prefer a heavy round with solid guidance... knew a bloke who was shot and fell and his defenders shot his attacker through a palm tree.. soft tissue vegetation.  Not an AK etc....

a .303 British bullet can penetrate 1/3rd of an inch (approximately 8.5mm) of steel.

That is a measure of power not of height.

The height of what?    :-/

The height of a high calibre of course.
Things that are physical and are high must, presumably, have height [does not include odours].

What is the height of a high calibre ?    :-/

When we know what a high calibre is then we can determine its characteristics.

Ahhh - it WAS an M1 Carbine.. not an AK or SKS ..... 25 charges including a number for 'shoot to kill'... OK up to 200 yards or so.... the magazines were the problem with weak springs... he was still a poor shot... silly buggar....

Maybe he didn't like living in the Khalifate of Bankistan and thought he was starting the war against Islamists (note) -  (Islamist/Islamics are two different things - but not exclusively - we tolerate Islamics... but not Islamists, capisce? ... LEARN the difference - DO BETTER)...

Unlike youse lot - I've studied terrorism/counter-terrorism - both kinds..... and I know of what I speak...

You're thinking of the Bull Goose Lesos... they're a special category at the Olympics...  at least two of the Brisbane NRLW team were blokes who 'identified' ... that has to stop...

https://www.facebook.com/savewomenssport/posts/in-australia-the-nrl-nrlw-permit-players-to-register-as-per-their-gender-identit/1291988376265327/

.. bloke on the team got up and made a speech after the 'win'... whole body etc and voice were man.... and at least one other on the Brissie team was a bloke ....this HAS to stop... much bigger and stronger and smashing opponents unlike demonstrating skills..

Here is the hedging....

"No, the NRL Women's Rugby League (NRLW) does not currently allow transwomen to play in sanctioned women's international matches, following a 2022 International Rugby League (IRL) ban and the development of an eligibility policy based on physical differences and safety. The policy aims to balance inclusion with the safety of all participants but has not yet permitted transwomen to compete in international competitions."

Note the shifty spin.... a cunning stunt reversal indeed....

High calibre is a bullshit term used by the media for anything bigger than a Daisy in .177

High powered is another term what some might think is high powered migh be average it just comes down to opinions.

I don't think .243/.260/7mm-08/.308 are high powered they are common hunting rounds

Many will say .308 and 30-06 are higher powered than 7mm-08 they have more muzzle energy yet the higher BC of the 7mm outperforms them at distances over 300 yards.

For me high powered would be anything like the 7mm .300 win magnums etc i would include 28 Nosler which is similar to 7mm RUM.

The 280 Ackley improved gives 7mm magnum performance with less powder i would rate the 280 as above average.

Barrett is Australian owned look at the .416 Barrett for what manufacturers come up with.

In 50 BMG the 750 Gr Hornady Amax outperforms M33 military ammo which shows ammo plays a big part in performance.

No AK ammo 7.62x39 in this list

I’ve been trying to put rhyme or reason to this.
All I could think of (without knowing him, his life situation or interviewing him) is a build up of emotions over time until boiling point. Sone people don’t know how to diffuse pent up feelings. Especially getting older and maybe not so much support around them as parents are gone, kids grown up and doing their own thing. Etc
The other reason is new medication (anti depressants etc) scripted by doctor.
Now there are some of these that have made people do unimaginable crimes when having a clean record all their life. Mind altering anti depressants prescriptions are not for everyone and like anything, no yardstick to go by if a person can tolerate it until too late.

This is where conspiracies come from because the media leaves out some important fact that makes it all make sense.

It could be an old .303 ?

A .303 British bullet can penetrate 1/3rd of an inch (approximately 8.5mm) of steel.

What more danger and power would impress you?

It wasn't a bolt action rifle take note of earlier post i made with cases being found by public. If it was a bolt action rifle cases would be in his unit or on shop awning.
Semi autos eject fired cases a fair distance from rifle.

A .308 has more power than old .303 i would say .308 is one of our most common hunting rounds.
By todays standards the old .303 wasn't that good lots of bullet drop along with poor BC means it gets blown further sideways than most in crosswind.

Quote:
The 61-year-old was arrested inside his unit about 9.30pm where police allegedly located and seized an M1 Carbine rifle and ammunition. Police allege his gun license expired in the 1992 but he had secretly kept the weapon.

Police will allege the suicide note lines up with what he allegedly told police after the shooting, including that he didn't sleep the night before the incident and sat in a chair into the early hours of Sunday thinking about how his life had turned 'bad'.

M1 carbine is semi auto uses 7.62x33mm.
.308 is 7.62x51mm
30-06 being 7.62x55mm.
Shorter case with M1 holds less powder

Note said he was suicidal.

Grappler picked it as M1

Yes they said people heard - "bang, bang, bang" so it definitely sounds like a semi auto ....

and an M1 carbine sounds like a good suspect.

NSW Police is investigating how Mr Mintzas allegedly came into possession of a
.30-calibre, M1 Carbine rifle, as his firearms licence had expired in 1992.
