I have never paid that much for steak, let alone mince. For good mince, get roo - under $15/kg at coles and woolies.

I don't pay that much for meat. Whatever happened to rump steak? When I was a kid rump steak was tender - now it's almost always tough. :-/ |

Haven’t purchased meat from the Monopoly Coles/Woolies in years. Sick to death of low class meat full of water - browning mince for stews sees nothing but water steaming off and meat boiling in the water instead or browning properly. IMG_7686.jpeg (65 KB | 14

I get my roo mince from them, but rarely anything else. I agree with you about watered down mince. Beef mince tastes bland after you start eating roo mince. For steak etc, there are plenty of butchers that do decent rump etc for well under $25/kg. I think I got a whole rump at $11/kg recently at an IGA. Not that I am very fussy about steak.

Hereford is excellent eating but Hereford aren't suited to qld nt wa. Eyes get infected, no tick resistance, get sunburnt, pant and get very heat stressed. They are better eating but most of our beef is now from the boss indicus linage . Brahmans and particularly drought masters. I still have a dozen or so droughties and they are great cattle, very easy to get on with,no health issues really . Just need a few salt licks for fertility. Their meat is not as good as Hereford or Angus as you say. Regarding roo, it's very healthy , no fat, pretty much free if your a shooter but I just don't really like the flavour. I don't even eat much meat and certainly not my own . I find it hard to even kill fish....getting too soft. Eat a ton of eggs, a ton of sardines and salmon and heaps of avocado. I find that mix just gives me a lot of energy |

The right herbs in small amounts actually enhance the flavor: AI Overview Herbs that pair well with beef mince include classic Mediterranean herbs like oregano, basil, and thyme, which are excellent for Italian-inspired dishes like meatballs and pasta sauces. Earthier herbs like rosemary and sage add depth to stews and casseroles, while fresh herbs such as parsley and chives provide a bright, fresh finish to any mince dish. Classic Italian Flavors Oregano: A staple in Italian cuisine, it adds a savory, slightly bitter note to pasta sauces and meat dishes. Basil: Known for its sweet and aromatic qualities, basil complements the richness of beef and is excellent in sauces and toppings. Thyme: With its mild, earthy flavor, thyme pairs well with beef and can be used in combination with other herbs for a more complex taste. Earthy & Savory Flavors Rosemary: This pungent, piney herb is a fantastic addition to beef mince, especially in slow-cooked dishes like stews or savoury mince. Sage: Sage has a strong, distinct flavor that adds a deep, savory profile to ground beef dishes. Fresh & Bright Flavors Parsley: A versatile herb, parsley adds a burst of freshness and a hint of green flavor, making it a great garnish or an ingredient mixed throughout. Chives: Similar to parsley, chives offer a mild oniony flavor and a fresh lift, ideal for finishing a dish. |

Olive oil, salt & pepper. That's all you need. Coat the meat in olive oil, salt & pepper and leave it on the bench at room temperature for an hour before cooking. Beautiful! |

Does rosemary go well with beef? AI Overview Yes, rosemary is an excellent herb to pair with beef, adding a woodsy, earthy, and slightly minty flavor that complements beef well in various dishes like roasts, steaks, stews, and slow-cooked meats. It can be used fresh or dried, often in combination with other flavors like garlic, to create delicious rubs, marinades, or as a stuffing for roasts. |

;D Bobby - im not saying that you are the stupidest person on this forum - but you’ll want to hope that john smith doesn’t die. You get given great advice on this forum day after day - but you totally ignore it all and keep doing the same things that you complain about. You literally created your own miserable existence of Supermarket Dominance, high pricing and poo quality products. Then you have to kill the taste by covering it in all sorts of herbs and spices. And im not saying that herbs etc don’t have their place - but greggy is 100% right on how to prepare meat to bring out their natural flavour. 🤤 |

Is roo mince better than roo steak?
I found roo steak underwhelming. Do you cook it like normal mince? I wish there was goat mince. I try and support the local butcher but it can be hit or miss. Aldi steak is consistently great and cheaper. I really need to catch some fresh fish once the winds bugger off. |

“ No, neither Coles nor Woolworths admits to adding water to their fresh beef mince to increase the weight. The significant amount of water released when cooking supermarket mince is attributed to naturally occurring moisture, including moisture from using meat from bulls, which has a higher water retention rate, and from the normal cooking process. However, some consumers have reported concerns about the weight loss and water content of mince purchased from these supermarkets.
What causes the moisture? Naturally high water content: Meat from bulls, which is often used for mince, has a higher water retention rate than meat from cows. Cooking process: Water is a natural component of meat, and much of it is released during the cooking process. Comparison with butcher mince: Some consumers have compared the water released from supermarket mince to that from a butcher, noting a significant difference. However, the mince types used in these comparisons were both labelled "premium" and "grass-fed," making the comparison difficult without further information. Consumer concerns: Despite official denials, many consumers remain concerned about the amount of water released from their cooked mince, with some feeling they have received less product than they paid for. What are the supermarkets saying? Coles: A spokesperson for the supermarket stated that they do not add water to their branded mince and that any water present during cooking is naturally occurring. Woolworths: A spokesperson explained that moisture is added to some meat products to enhance their texture and flavour, but did not specify if this applies to their beef mince. What you can do Check the weight: You can check the weight of your pre-packaged mince by using the scales in the produce aisle. Some shoppers have found that the weight can vary by up to 300g from the labelled weight. Cook it: Cook the mince and weigh the cooked product. If the cooked weight is significantly lower than the advertised weight, you can contact the supermarket and request a refund. Buy from a butcher: Many consumers have reported that the mince from a local butcher has less water when cooked and that it is a better value for money. ” “ AI |

It's cryo packed.... you're probably right. Had that experience down at the farm when we went up the west end of the valley to a place that specialised in prime French something beef... all frozen and tough as nails. Arrrgh - could get nutrition out of it but I would likely grind my teeth down first... I thought we'd show up and get fresh ... handed out of a freezer. Up here the butcher I go to does the best rump..... I like rump without all the fat... and he does them 3/4" thick ... and good meat. I still feel sorry for the cows... but that's life... |

Yes - I can't stand tough steak - if it's like that I do a slow cook mild curry, 90 minutes simmering away - that makes it tender and yummy. |

Roo steak is probably better, but expensive. I get the roo mince because it is cheap and good. I substitute it for everything where I used to use beef mince. Mostly mexican and bolognaise. I've done the roo steaks a few times but they are tricky to cook. Odd shapes and low fat content that means you need a lot of oil or something to cook it. Easier to just cook a slab of rump, which you can get cheap if you hunt around. |

That's one reason I'm reluctant to buy Supermarket or grain fed feed lot cattle meat. Anything that phuks with how a cows ruminant system works can't be any good no matter what they say about it's safety. Just another added chemical. Cow & sheep burps & farts are the least of our worries. |
