Title: Tasmania government determined to go broke

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-09-17/tasmania-hobart-afl-macquarie-point-planning-commission-findings/105781448

“ The report provided a $974 million upfront construction cost, including car park, buses, lifecycle costs and state subsidy for the Tasmania Devils AFL club.

The cost-benefit ratio is less than 0.5, meaning that for every $1 spent, less than a 50-cent direct benefit will be returned.”

I ask, why do governments continue to prop up private companies while failing to provide adequate funding for public services?

Just follow the money.

Friends and donors and relatives will always profit financially from the project.

Eventually when the politicians leave they will gain employment with these same people at impressive salaries.

The chance to stroke their egos at the opening ceremony and photo shoots is also a bonus.

They don’t have to pay for it. Why would they care about the people they are elected to represent want?

Apparently there is a good stadium in Launceston needing hardly any work.

That is what I heard, couldn’t care less about spectator sport or AFL.
