Australia lifts US beef ban, sets stage for Trump tariff talks
Australia has moved to dump the ban on US beef imports that Donald Trump’s billionaire trade adviser Howard Lutnick slammed as “nonsense” in a major olive branch to end the tariff war. The big move removes the Trump administration’s key excuse for imposing steep tariffs on Australian beef exports to the US. Australia’s bans on fresh beef from the US was to protect against foot-and-mouth outbreak that could cost Australia $80 billion and Mad Cow disease. But in late 2024 and early 2025, the US introduced more robust movement controls which means that all cattle, from Canada and Mexico, can be identified and traced to the farm and through the supply chain. The Albanese Government confirmed the big move on Thursday with government sources confirming it was communicated to the US government overnight Wednesday (AEST). “The Albanese Labor Government will never compromise on biosecurity,’’ Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Julie Collins MP: “The US Beef Imports Review has undergone a rigorous science and risk-based assessment over the past decade. “The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is satisfied the strengthened control measures put in place by the US effectively manage biosecurity risks. “Australia stands for open and fair trade – our cattle industry has significantly benefited from this.” The announcement will allow for expanded access to include beef sourced from cattle born in Canada or Mexico which is legally imported and slaughtered in the US. Despite the recent tariff war, Australian beef has had back-to-back record-breaking export years, with last year worth $14 billion. The Albanese maintains it was a Departmental decision based on scientific advice following a review of the restrictions initiated more than 18 months ago, prior to Donald Trump re-election as President for a second term. The US buys in fresh beef from central and South America, where outbreaks of these diseases have been reported. Prime minister Anthony Albanese had previously warned we won’t back down on biosecurity protections. “The beef issue was about mad cow disease and about also the fact that beef to Australia couldn’t be guaranteed – whether it had also come from Canada or Mexico as well,” he said at a media conference. Mr Lutnick, who is the US Commerce Secretary had rubbished Anthony Albanese’s claims that the laws are to protect Australia from diseases insisting it is simply a protectionist tactic to block American imports. “Our farmers are blocked from selling almost anywhere. Europe won’t let us sell beef, Australia won’t let us sell beef,” Mr Lutnick said. The interviewer interjected to say this was “because of hormonal chemicals”. Lutnick replied: “No, no, that’s not why. It’s because they just wanna protect, they want to say: oh, what, the seeds are different? Other people in the world are using seeds? Come on, this is nonsense. This is all nonsense. What happens is they block our markets.” “When we open those markets ...the price of groceries will come down. Let Donald Trump run the global economy. He knows what he’s doing. Let him fix it. Let Donald Trump fix the US economy.” As Australia fights to secure a better deal Mr Lutnick had also warned the US President “won’t back off.” “I don’t think there’s any chance the President is going to back off the tariffs. This is the reordering of global trade,’’ Mr Lutnick told CNN on Friday AEDT. “The president is not going to back off. But countries can fix their tariffs, their non-tariff trade barriers, which are much, much rougher. They are the monster that needs to be slayed. “Then, and only then, will Donald Trump make a deal with each country – when they’ve really, really changed their ways.” “Negotiate is talking. No talking. Too late. These countries have abused us and exploited us, as he said yesterday. They need to change their ways, let’s see them change their ways. It’s going to be a long time, let’s see what they do. Not talking. Talking is nonsense.” Mr Lutnick previously come out swinging against Australia as he strongly defended the 25 per cent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on steel and aluminium “Look, you’ve got dumpers in the rest of the world. Japan dumps steel. China dumps steel. What that means is they make it, they over produce and they sell it dirt cheap to try to drive our guys out of business,” he said. “The President is here to protect American workers. He’s here to protect American industry. We’re going to stop that nonsense and bring steel here. https://www.news.com.au/national/politics/prime-minister-lifts-us-beef-ban-sets-stage-for-trump-tariff-talks/news-story/4604d86dad7f73142f5d73a25b3ad80a |

There has to be a different way to work with Trump on lowering tariffs than exposing our world's best beef industry to the risk of Mad Cow disease. I mean, it's not like we have a shortage of beef in this country. It's not like the tariffs are hurting our farmers, because they're having record-breaking year after record-breaking year. Our beef is keenly sought after abroad and we are the second largest beef exporter worldwide behind Brazil. Albo has once again shown what a dismally weak person he is and how utterly unfit he is to lead this country. First his weakness in dealing with Chinese Navy ships off our shores and now caving in to a convicted felon. Pathetic.

stop your crying you dumb arse.
The policy was always up for review. Australia's 'beef' was always that they had no way of determining what was coming from the US, and what was coming through the US from Mexico. That issue has always been resolved. The US improved their controls, we know where the beef comes from, and the regulators have now decided that the risk is minimised. That by the way was a condition on importing beef that the LIBERAL party supported when they were in govt. |

Yet the fact remains that we, as the second biggest exporter of beef in the world, do not need to be importing beef from the United States. Why expose our beef industry to even a miniscule risk when there is no benefit in doing so? Honestly, this is one of the dumbest and weakest things I've seen Airbus Albo do, period. |

I don’t understand why usa need to sell their beef to Australia. We have an abundance of our own Aussie grown beef. USA have mega millions of people, Australia doesn’t.
So where is there room for USA beef in our supermarket fridges or at our local butchers? Aren’t we in Australia, allowed to be independent and able to produce our own enough to feed ourselves? From what I can see there’s enough. Then there’s the ones that are vegan. And more push towards becoming vegetarian too! If I recall correctly, all the orange trees in Mildura were all pulled out, and we started getting imported oranges from USA. I was horrified! Just watch this space…. see what happens to our beef industry getting muscled out like our oranges. |

It’s a political game of power by Trump. It’s not a necessity for us in Oz, but Albo is being coerced into a corner, almost blackmail … it’s buy our beef, let us import to your country, or a tariff slapped on your country. This has nothing you do with respecting our country as great with the best beef in the world, it’s about trump favouring his own country. He couldn’t be happier if our beef industry falls apart… all the more to make us dependent on their exporting to us. MAGA? Is this how? |

It's not like he's going to be affected by trade deals - he couldn't care less. This is about him throwing his weight around and wanting people to fall over themselves to appease him and tell him what a great leader he is and so on and so forth. It's all about ego for Trump. He couldn't care less if he shafts US consumers in the process. |

Have you seen the price of meat products in Australia? Australian Lamb, beef and pork are in many cases DEARER here than the same goods overseas. Unless you are prepared to pay top dollar for meat at a Butcher, where in most cases they personally select the beast, you are stuck at the supermarkets and the low quality, high price product they serve - usually an inferior product to what goes overseas. We only get access to reasonably priced Meat and Seafood when the Overseas markets don’t buy and the Producer has to get rid of it to the 2nd class Aussie. Remember the ban by China on our seafood? SA Fishermen were begging Aussies to buy because they were going broke. Instead of enjoying the best of what our country produces at reasonable prices, we are the consumers of the products they can’t sell overseas.
If Australian Primary producers put the needs of tyhe Australian Market first - instead of going for the lucrative overseas markets, I would have some pity - but I don’t - especially as they also suck on the Taxpayer teat for any Government Benefits available when the overseas market reduces It may well be that we get access to good imported quality meat products that will compete here and cause competition in the market. It seems all the rigours are in place to ensure all is ok, so whilst I buy Australian whenever possible, I don’t see why I should pay some Beef Producer for an inferior product when a better quality and cheaper alternative is avaiable |

Australia is a net exported of beef. We export about 75% of the beef we produce, and we are the second largest exporter globally. Our beef is generally cheaper than American beef.
So I can't see how this is going to hurt Australian farmers. There will be bugger all imports from the US into Australia. But if it gets rid of the 10% US tariff on Australian beef, it will be a great help to our farmers. Quote:
It has taken a long time for the US to tighten up control to achieve traceability. The timing may not be a coincidence, because previously it was considered a non-issue, given no-one was wanting to import American beef anyway. |

An interesting viewpoint here:
"Cattle Australia 'comfortable' with decision on US beef Will Evans, the chief executive of the peak body for the grass-fed cattle industry Cattle Australia, says he feels comfortable a decision to remove the remaining restrictions on US beef is based on science. "The cattle industry is a $75 billion industry. The department has undertaken a technical, scientific assessment and we have to put faith in them," he told ABC's Radio National Breakfast. "We are a global advocate for rules and science-based trading. Unfortunately in this circumstance it means we've had to open a door that as a producer you probably wouldn't want to open. But we have to recognise that the science has been used here to make this decision." "For us, the US is an incredibly important trading partner. We need to maintain access and we need to maintain relationships with them." Evans says he does not think it would impact trade too much. "If I'm being honest, the trade terms here are not in favour of the US exporting to us. The way this economy works for us is that we [our beef products] go to them." https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-24/federal-politics-live-blog-parliament-july-23/105565032 |

Very few local Butchers breakdown bodies of beef anymore. They buy their meat in boxed from wholesalers. Boxed t-bones, boxed rumps, boxed rib fillet, boxed blades, rounds, topsides, etc, etc, etc even very few bodies of pork or lamb. They buy in boxed offal as well. We won't be importing top quality US Beef I'd bet you. For over 40 years most of the beef exported from Australia into the US has been for their "Hamburger" trade........ old culled bulls & cows. That has changed & now includes good grass fed beef which is liked by US consumers. In general our beef quality is better than US - so why would we want their beef on our shelves? |

Will it mean we will get Yanky grain fed beef eye fillet at a good price? yummy
Google AI Eye fillet from grain-fed beef is generally considered more tender than grass-fed. This is because grain-fed cattle typically have higher levels of intramuscular fat (marbling) due to their diet, which contributes to a more tender and buttery texture. Here's why: Marbling: Grain feeding enhances marbling, which is the intramuscular fat distributed throughout the muscle. This fat melts during cooking, resulting in a more tender and flavorful steak. Tenderloin: Eye fillet, also known as tenderloin, is already one of the most tender cuts of beef, as it comes from a muscle that does little work. When grain-fed, the marbling further enhances its tenderness. Texture: Grain-fed beef tends to have a more buttery and softer texture due to the higher fat content, making it a preferred choice for those seeking a melt-in-your-mouth experience. While grass-fed beef has its own benefits, including a leaner profile and potentially more robust flavor, grain-fed eye fillet is generally considered the more tender option. |

I guess I have been spoilt over the last few years by a local butcher who still has contacts with local producers. I fully agree our beef quality is better than the US, which is why most of our decent beef goes there. Whilst in the US this year, I wandered around the local markets and noted our produce was much cheaper than we pay. I love BBQ lamb loin chops, but at $15 for 4 small ones at Coles, I don’t buy unless I have a “ping” for them - in the US, those same ones were a lot cheaper, even taking into account the exchange rate. We are getting screwed by our primary producers because they chase the big dollars with the premium meat whilst leaving us with the remains. I don’t know which is better, low quality Aussie beef/lamb/pork at high prices or imported produce at (at this stage) unknown prices. I am hoping the big thing this will do is introduce competition. Unfortunately, Australia seems to favour export of everything rather than country first, export the rest. All well and good if your exports are priced appropriately for the quality, but nothing more than a cash grab for the few if they are not. |

Woolies and Coles started selling up to 12 month old calves as veal and now the standard for veal has gone from 4 months to 12 months. It should have been stopped in the beginning. |

This household will be checking the origin of all meat we purchase to avoid US products.
The majority of what we source is with a group of families in bulk so we know where it's coming from on a farm level, but sometimes when we don't feel like breaking down a whole bunch of chooks or defrosting and cubing up a chuck roast, I'll run down to Woolies or Coles since there no decent butchers in a 5-10 minute radius, so I'll be sure to check country of origin on those from now on. Of course not.
But to be fair it was Scomo LNP government that allowed the last plane out of wuhan to land and release the covid virus into Australia via Melbourne airport. It was also the Scomo LNP government after his visit to see Trump and the big dinner, marching band plus his medal awarded by Trump himself that convinced Scomo and his LNP government to just cancel the French sub deal at the cost of tens of millions for nothing and agreed to go with American submarine deal at the cost of billions with no guarantees we will actually get the submarines. Scomo and the LNP has left us with billions wasted and if Trump talks Australia must jump. Albo has nothing to negotiate with that is why Trump can’t be bothered to meet him. Trump is not smacking with them, Australia can have these two baboons representing them and trump will just ignore Australia. |

Most of the meat from Woolies and Coles isn't cheap and isn't worth eating or trying to eat. |

Definitely! Best to go to the old fashioned butcher shop or I buy from 2 sources. One is Butchercrowd I have a delivery once every 2 months. And a grass fed, organic butcher is about 25 mins drive away … not cheap but it’s beautiful meat! What I don’t mind buying from the regular supermarkets are their organic chickens or free range eggs. As for fruit… since the orange trees were destroyed in Mildura to have usa oranges imported… I refused to buy them and I’m still wary. Apples … here’s a photo my daughter sent me… she put 2 next to each other and one had hot water poured over it….that’s white wax covering the skin. I’m really put off fruit, except for our Qld bananas and pineapples. 754C29F5-B153-4CBC-B026-35C73653D0C6.jpeg (75 KB | 3

I found this interesting:
"Although the US has been able to send beef to Australia since 2019, any cattle raised in Canada or Mexico before being slaughtered and processed in the US was previously barred due to biosecurity concerns.” https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/the-big-biosecurity-question-at-the-centre-australias-us-beef-move/csjqal9ek I thought the embargo was on the US and it’s homegrown product but, it appears that product has been allowed in to Australia since 2019 and only Canada and Mexico beef is the issue. I assume his tariffs will stretch to “imported” beef from Canada and Mexico and processed in US abattoirs and processing facilities? I am personally happy to accept the US only Beef and the Yanks can have the tarriffed Canada/Mexican bulls! I must say, I still don’t have 100% confidence in our ability to maintain biosecurity on imports. I would be happy to see an independent review of the Biosecurity data used to establish their view of risk |

I'm a beef producer and mad cow disease was a bit of a covid moment .
I don't think it's a problem The main issue is that farmers are on average 65 and older and they are selling up to tree changers, hipcamp operators and big vietnamese, American , Brazilian and Canadian feed lot operators. The cattle are often tagged with Woolworths or Coles ear tags from birth and woolies and Coles source the corn and sorghum to fatten them up for the Aussie market. A pretty vertically integrated model designed to deliver sick meat from sick cattle full of hormones, antibiotics and diabetic food. Then they monocrop broadacre to feed the cows. Terrible model for the environment. Without cattle to graze rough country it reverts to lantana, thorn apple, cat's claw and wild tobacco fairly quickly leading to a complete death of native fauna and a soil collapse as these pests need to be bombarded with chemicals as does the corn paddocks. Should result in a total soil collapse in the next few decades ::) ::) |

We need to be assured as to the safety of the US beef. The US has lax standards on it's slaughtered beef compared to Australian standards. In the US food poisoning from bad food is a common problem. Their inspection regime is primitive, based purely on, "touch and smell" whereas ours is based on scientific tests. >:(

And here’s a link to tell the difference … grain fed or grass fed.
Decades ago we saw the Charlton feedlot (one of the very first feedlot in Australia) and how cows are virtually not free range. They are kept in enclosures and fed grain. I knew from then I would be extra vigilant about meat I buy, and in fact, started buying less and eating less meat as time went by. Guess I was lucky I knew of it back then. So that was my quest… organic and free range… beef, eggs, chicken, milk, whatever … I decided to pay the extra $$$ … after all, let food be your medicine. https://www.butchercrowd.com.au/blog-post/is-grass-fed-beef-really-better-for-you?campaignid=22674938571&adgroupid=180426716785&adid=761202311222&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22674938571&gbraid=0AAAAABOeDJLvq4TzqD8n5y1CQsyFBy1MR&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5fS8p7bVjgMVXNsWBR2qdQCbEAAYASAJEgISevD_BwE 1F0D990E-277D-4137-9D4F-E65E8625AD5C.jpeg (133 KB | 8

Trump is telling anyone who will listen about this deal, and ridiculously claiming it's proof that US beef is the best and cleanest in the world. What a douchebag! Does he ever listen to the utter crap that comes out of his mouth? America has had seven confirmed cases of Mad Cow Disease just from 2003 to 2013 alone. Australia has had, wait for it, a grand total of none - ever. Oh, and Australia is the second largest exporter of beef. India even exports more beef than the US and cows are sacred to them!!!

Title: Re: Albo the coward sells out Aussie farmers Post by Bobby. on Jul 25th, 2025 at 8:08pm Google AI: Cooking beef does not eliminate the risk of getting mad cow disease (BSE). The abnormal protein that causes BSE, known as a prion, is resistant to normal cooking temperatures and cannot be destroyed by cooking. While the risk of contracting vCJD (the human form of BSE) from eating properly inspected and regulated beef is extremely low, cooking does not reduce that risk. Here's why: Prions are heat-resistant: Unlike bacteria and viruses, prions, which are misfolded proteins, are not easily deactivated by heat. Normal cooking temperatures aren't high enough: While high temperatures can denature prions, the temperatures typically used for cooking beef are not sufficient to render them harmless. Regulations are in place to minimize risk: Governments have implemented measures like banning certain cattle parts from the food supply and recalling potentially contaminated meat to significantly reduce the risk of BSE transmission. In short, even well-cooked beef from a potentially infected animal could still pose a risk, though the risk is currently very low due to regulatory measures. |

Yeah, seven cases isn't "almost untouched". Especially an advanced country like the US. It does prove, however, that their biosecurity and quarantine laws aren't nearly as effective as ours here in Australia. In fact, the only other country to have more cases was the UK. The latest case in the US was confirmed in 2023. |

“The Albanese Labor Government will never compromise on biosecurity’’
"Prime minister Anthony Albanese had previously warned we won’t back down on biosecurity protections" But only when it comes to protecting business and the economy. When it comes to Covid, flu, measles, mpox and other diseases entering Australia and killing and sickening people (especially the elderly and other vulnerable people) the government's response is "Biosecurity? What's that?" f_____g hypocrites. Especially Albanese. |
