More than 50,000 people have made the perilous Channel crossing to the UK in small boats since Keir Starmer became prime minister last July on a promise to “smash the gangs” of people smugglers.

The release of small boat crossing figures came as a UK town applied for a High Court injunction on Tuesday to stop asylum seekers being housed in a local hotel, following protests, some of which turned violent.

The council in Epping, northeast of London, applied for an interim injunction against the housing of of asylum seekers and refugees at the Bell Hotel, citing “the clear risk of further escalating community tensions”.

“The current situation cannot go on. If the Bell Hotel was a nightclub we could have closed it down long ago,” Epping Forest district council leader Chris Whitbread, from the Conservative party, said in a statement.

Protests broke out in the town in July after an asylum seeker was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, which he denies.

Since then hundreds of people have taken part in protests and counter-protests outside the Bell Hotel. Further anti-immigration demonstrations also spread to London and around England.

Europe has not yet corrected course. In Britain’s case, since Tony Blair’s period in office, the UK’s population has risen from 60 million to almost 70 million as a result of mass immigration, with an average of close to 500,000 net new arrivals per annum over the last eight years. The numbers include the 176,000 who have crossed the Channel since 2018, many of whom are among the estimated one million illegal immigrants in Britain.

The influx has produced dramatic changes: indigenous Britons are now a minority in London, Birmingham and other urban areas.  And up to three million of the arrivals since 2000 have been Muslim, with the consequence that they increasingly determine the fate of traditional Labour seats. Their wishes also increasingly influence Britain’s foreign, immigration and policing policies and have increased pressure for the erosion of free speech through ‘Islamophobia’ restrictions.

Labour attacked the Tories for losing control of borders and has pledged to reduce legal immigration and to stop the boats by ‘smashing the gangs’. But its heart isn’t in it. Although Britain has paid France £710 million to stop the boats, the people smugglers continue to operate and advertise openly. The pull factors are unprecedentedly strong – often luxurious hotel accommodation, free mobile phones, allowances, gold-plated access to the NHS, no detention and a good chance of working in the black economy. Plus helpful lawyers and judges who use Britain’s membership of the European Convention on Human Rights to ensure there is little chance of illegal immigrants ever having to leave, however weak their asylum claims. This year, which has already seen a record 25,000 cross-Channel arrivals, will probably see an all-time record. Starmer boasts he’s deported 35,000 people, but is more shy about admitting that only a pitifully small number are boat arrivals.

At the latest count there were 33,000 asylum seekers in 218 hotels – costing £5.7 million a day. The hotels are usually taken over without notice to local authorities, radically changing the character of small communities overnight. The arrivals have included terrorists and many criminals. Recently, eleven girls were sexually assaulted, raped or attacked by asylum seekers in 12 days. And in just three hotels in Bournemouth, 116 charges have been brought against 51 asylum seekers.

Middle England is steadily stirring to anger and protest. A Yougov poll has shown 45 per cent of Britons want zero net immigration combined with ‘large numbers’ of deportations, more than those opposed to such measures.

The number of sex crimes committed by foreigners in Britain has risen by 62% in just four years, and immigrants now account for one in seven convictions, new statistics on migrant sexual offences show.

According to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) data, which was obtained by think tank Centre for Migration Control, theft convictions by foreign nationals also increased by 77.9% between 2021 and 2024, while robbery convictions increased by 18.9%.

During the same period, sexual offence convictions by British nationals increased by 39.3%, those for theft rose by 55.8% and those for robbery went up by 2.8%, with the larger increases in foreign national convictions coming after record-high net migration of 906,000 in 2023, The Telegraph reported.

Of the sexual offence convictions where a foreign nationality was recorded, the highest number were committed by Indians, followed by Romanians, Poles, Pakistanis, Afghans, Nigerians, Sudanese, Bangladeshis, Portuguese and Iranians.

Indians also had the largest percentage increase over the four-year period, followed by Nigerians and Iraqis.

There was also a 110% increase in sexual offence convictions for the seven nationalities that made up the majority of illegal Channel crossings last year – Afghans, Syrians, Iranians, Vietnamese, Eritreans, Sudanese and Iraqis – between 2021 and 2024.

Of those nationalities, Afghans had the most convictions in 2024, followed by Sudanese, Iranians, Iraqis and Syrians.

The MoJ said the data had limitations, including that an offender could have multiple listed nationalities while being recorded by their “primary” nationality, and one individual could be convicted of multiple offences.

It would also overturn certain domestic laws, most notably the Human Rights Act, which incorporates the ECHR into UK law. Even migrants who arrive illegally and commit serious criminal offences can claim a right to stay indefinitely with the help of the ECHR. An Afghan national has admitted raping a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton.

Ahmad Mulakhil pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to one count of raping a child under the age of 13. He had previously denied the charge.

Mulakhil, 23 and of no fixed abode, also denied abducting a child, three counts of rape of a child under 13 and two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13.

He appeared alongside co-defendant Mohammad Kabir, 23, also of no fixed abode, and who denies attempting to take a child, aiding and abetting rape of a child under 13, and intentional strangulation of the girl. They are due to stand trial on 26 January
