Title: Pet insurance?
Post by Daves2017 on Jul 4th, 2025 at 12:19am
Is it worth it?

Who would be best to go with?

I normally have a thousand dollar limit I will spend on a vet at anyone time.

If that doesn’t cover the costs then I’ll pay for a needle to solve the suffering.

Is pet insurance a good thing?

Asking for my cat .

Hey Dave,

Not sure about pet insurance.

First dog was a family pet rather than my dog. Killed in a car accident.

Second dog was a gift from someone to Mum after Dad passed. The chihuahua lived to 14 BUT being a pure breed went blind at 10 years of age. Insurance might have payed for fixing at least one eye.

Third dog was my dog, a Jack Russell/Maltese Terrier, 8.5Kg of character. Died aged 13.5 after eating rubbish that perforated her gut and pancreas and blocked her bowel—no point to performing surgery the vet said.

So—one dog run over by a car, one blind age 10, one healthy until greed caused her death.

I know nothing about cats not believing they belong in Australia.

Generally, with annual checkups and vaccinations I think pets generally die when they are ready to die.

You will have to weigh up whether a small weekly payment is worth it. Maybe spend it giving your cat a healthy diet. I would add “lifestyle” but how the hell do you do that for a cat? A cat cage with climbing/scratching posts?

I am of your thinking.
Rescue pets are VERY good. There are too many cats and dogs anyway.
They are better animals, more ethically obtained at a lower price.
Buying a pedigree pet enables animal breeders to misuse animals.
Many pedigree animals are VERY expensive to own.

LOL. When I was still living in Adelaide I took Socks to a big dog park about a 20 minute walk away. Socks always attracts attention because she is so beautiful.

Twice there I was asked where I had obtained Socks. Angrily disappointed looks followed—obviously these two ladies had spent $4-5000 buying a dog from a breeder and they were outclassed by a mutt from the pound.  ;D
