Title: Victoria - more taxes Post by Bobby. on May 16th, 2025 at 11:05pm
As if the new land taxes were not enough:
This latest one will send farmers broke. paywalled here: https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/what-is-the-fire-services-levy-and-who-pays-it-20250516-p5lzs6.html Some can be seen here: https://12ft.io/proxy From The AGE - What is the fire services levy and who pays it? ByGemma Grant May 16, 2025 — 3.43pm A controversial increase to Victoria’s fire services levy was passed through state parliament on Friday morning. While the Labor government says revenue raised through the tax will provide emergency services workers with financial support, farmers and firefighters strongly oppose the legislation. My opinion: The Victorian Govt has put our rates up - by forcing the councils to charge us money for fire services by law. The councils have to do it - and be tax collectors for the Govt. - Any way they can raise more taxes by strong arming councils. So if the council told them to get stuffed they would be put in jail by the Gestapo. All Jacinta Allan can do is raise more and more taxes - taxes because you exist - you own a home and indirectly pay if you rent. Will this follow a pattern every time they want more money? Google AI. The Victorian government is increasing the Fire Services Levy, with the average homeowner facing a bill increase from $191 to $254 per year. This represents a median increase of $63 per year for residential properties, according to The Age. The increase is part of a larger plan to fund emergency services, including expanded coverage to other disaster response services. |

Firefighters to protest at parliament as controversial levy passes By Eleanor Wilson 7:35pm May 16, 2025 A planned mass protest opposing the newly passed emergency services levy in Victoria could cast a shadow over Treasurer Jaclyn Symes' first budget on Tuesday. Infuriated farmers and CFA volunteers are expected to take to the steps of parliament after the multibillion-dollar services tax passed through parliament in the early hours of the morning. It comes as members of almost 100 Country Fire Authority brigades last night walked off the job in protest. The controversial levy increase has caused major angst in regional parts of the state, where farmers and firefighters are expected to be among the hardest hit. What is the tax? The Emergency Services and Volunteer Fund aims to raise funds to support the needs of the state's fire response networks, including the State Control Centre, triple zero and the SES. Formerly known as the Emergency Service Levy, the fee has been in place for landholders since 2012, but new legislation will see the rate more than doubled. Every landowner in Victoria is required to pay the levy, but farmers will be hit particularly hard, with the tax expected to cost some primary producers tens of thousands of dollars. |

Yes Bobby, it's one of the problems with democracy.
The city dwelling fat public servants outnumber the productive farmers who contribute to society so they can rob them at will. Why not introduce an Apex tax. 10% of the proceeds of any Sudanese home invasion paid by the gang. This would seem a more rational tax |

The whole tax idea for owners of property is straight from Karl Marx.
It's communism where you don't own your land anymore - the State owns it and charges you rent. People have voted for communism. |

The Victorian government’s soaring tax grab in 11 charts
Victorians will soon be paying close to triple the amount of tax they did when Daniel Andrews came to power. These charts lay bare how the Andrews-Allan governments have ramped up key taxes, levies and fines on households and businesses. Mitch Clarke and Brendan Kearns 2 min read May 22, 2025 Wow - check all these Victorian taxes: https://archive.md/oBLJo#selection-4445.0-4445.114 even taxes I never heard of - e.g. "Victorian property owners pay this tax when the value of their land rises by more than $100,000 due to a rezoning." |

While not yet a failed state, Victoria is sailing close to the wind. Leaving aside the Allan government’s spin and obfuscation, this week’s budget told a sorry tale, but not a surprising one.
If there is one constant in Australian fiscal affairs, it is that the Victorian Labor government will spend excessively, mismanage major projects, swell the ranks of its public servants and – notwithstanding punitive tax assaults on investors and other unfavoured classes – further inflate the state’s debt. ... Why the fall from grace? The most obvious reason is that since the election of Dan Andrews in 2014, Victoria has effectively been a one-party state. The state Coalition parties – at least until the recent elevation of Brad Battin to the Liberal leadership – have been an opposition in name only. This has been justified as political expediency, but when put to the electoral test in 2018 and 2022, it signally failed. The result? The Andrews and Jacinta Allan governments have faced no challenge to their hard-left policy agenda. This has allowed them to commit to the most ambitious – read economically costly – emissions targets in the country and bet the house on intermittent wind and solar power. ... In a scathing 2023 report, the Victorian Ombudsman found that the integrity, competence and professionalism of the state’s public service had been compromised by its “creeping politicisation”. It reported “growing pressure to tailor official advice to the preferences of the government”, particularly on politically sensitive infrastructure projects; “decisions made in echo chambers not subject to the scrutiny of expert career officials”, and; a “culture of fear in the upper echelons of the public sector” that “does not support frank and fearless advice”. With a public service unable to fulfil its traditional role as a trusted, arm’s-length and credible adviser, another potential check on the government’s mismanagement of the state has been removed. The third, and perhaps most significant, reason Victoria has gone off the rails is that Canberra has not only allowed it to do so, but rewarded it into the bargain. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/commentary/failing-oneparty-state-an-ominous-warning-for-nation/news-story/7ae3cec6862fa58eeaecfdb10382daec |

Thanks Frank,
at least we could read that paywalled article from the Australian. Victoria is in a lot of trouble - Dirty Dan left us with an enormous debt. He doesn't care - he moves on and gets a huge pension for life. He should have faced trial for crimes against humanity - placing 5.5 million innocent people under house arrest and forcing many to take Covid jabs that were not properly tested - a medical experiment against the Nuremberg principles where those found guilty were hanged in 1946. |
