Title: KI’s war on feral cats

Not on all of KI, on the narrow peninsula:

Drones, AI and one long fence: Kangaroo Island’s war on a clawed predator that kills 1.5bn Australian animals a year

Feral cats are a menace to wildlife but South Australia’s KI has taken a stand in a bold eradication program that is at a critical point

When there are a lot of cats shooting/trapping them is easy. When 1% are left it is harder and if they breed the eradication program is in danger of failing.

Quote:
he cat-proof fence drops off a sheer cliff on one side of Kangaroo Island, and disappears into the ocean on the other. The top section is floppy and electrified – a rude shock for wily cats seeking to climb over – and the bottom is burrow-proof.

Gaps left for humans and wildlife funnel any would-be trespassers through a minefield of traps, which are closely monitored.

Kangaroo Island’s 38,000 hectares Dudley Peninsula eradication program, run by the KI Landscape Board (Kilb), has decimated the island’s feral cat population from a high of about 1,600 to approximately 150, although it’s hard to pin down precise numbers.

Cat-detecting dogs, drones, artificial intelligence, and thermal optics all play a role, as does the feline hotline, where residents can report a cat sighting.

Fencing off an area is essential to local feral cat eradication.

High-tech is used to identify feral cats. Article is worth reading:

At best, feral cats are sparsely distributed and nocturnal—hard to reduce numbers with shooting and if they breed eradication becomes even harder.

KI may need to subdivide the Dudley Pen with more fences to finish the eradication. Eradicate a smaller area—no breeding there, local eradication successful and permanent!

I sincerely wish them the very best with their campaign!

Why do we not see posts like this in Environment? Why is it all off topic shit?

Environment of Inflation—move to Finance and Economics

“Cats and Critters topics now here” —move to this MRB, the thread I told the little turd he can use.

Then demand environmental posts, boot the Mod when he cannot comply. It is bloody obvious that when Booby broke with DuByne he became totally lost as to what to do with Environment.

Environment should be citing and posting multiple scientific links to NASA, Nature etc, raising OzPol SEO ranking.
