Footage appears to show hospital workers bragging about killing Israeli patients

The NSW Health Department has called in police and launched an urgent investigation into social media footage appearing to show two hospital workers from Bankstown Hospital bragging about killing and refusing to treat Israeli patients.

Premier Chris Minns said the pair were identified on Wednesday morning and were stood down pending a full investigation.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the footage, which has been shared widely on Instagram, made him feel “sick to my stomach”, while Israel’s deputy foreign minister has called for the man and woman shown in the video to be fired.

“The comments are vile, dehumanising and unacceptable,” Park said.

Park said the comments in the video did not reflect the values of the NSW community.

The NSW Health Department has called in police after footage surfaced appearing to show Bankstown Hospital workers bragging about killing Israeli patients.

“I have asked NSW Health to launch an urgent investigation to identify the individuals, and they have also referred the matter to NSW Police,” he said.

“If the investigation concludes that this behaviour has occurred, these individuals will no longer be working for NSW Health.”

Israeli social media personality Max Veifer posted a video on Instagram and TikTok showing him talking to a man in NSW Health scrubs and a woman in what appears to be a hospital.

Asked what would happen if an Israeli patient came into the hospital, the woman says: “I won’t treat them, I will kill them.”

She also says: “One day, your time will come, and you will die the most horrible death.”

The man adds: “You have no idea how many [Israelis] came to this hospital, and I sent them to Jaheem” – the Islamic equivalent of the underworld.

Veifer uses the social media platform Chatroulette – which allows users to speak to randomly chosen strangers around the world – to expose antisemitism.

This masthead has been unable to independently verify the authenticity of the video. Veifer and the NSW Police have been contacted for comment.

Fairly typical for Bankstown Hospital I would say. It’s a” culture “ in certain hospitals in NSW.

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital: Director of Medical Services - Dr Wendy Harmer and the rest of the leadership team may care to comment?

It’s interesting that they are so busy that they filmed this at work in the hospital.

The issue being if they are sacked they will simply find another job nursing.
They need to be deregistered from nursing all together and an investigation launched into their “ colleagues “ .
I don’t believe that they are acting alone.

Mr Nadir fled Afghanistan as a 12-year-old, becoming an Australian citizen in 2020. He also worked part-time at a Sydney CBD medical centre, which has in the past hour scrubbed 27-year-old Mr Nadir from their website.

As the journalist approached the house a middle-aged woman confronted him yelling: “Get the f..k off my property”. The journalist was on the footpath and at no stage on the property.

She continued yelling at the reporter to “get the f..k off my property” until a young man approached the reporter and tried to take his phone as he was asking questions.

The young man then snatched the reporter’s phone from his hands and walked back to the house with it, ignoring requests for it to be returned. An older man then came out of the house as the pair demanded that everything on the phone be deleted.

“I don’t give you permission to record me” the older man said, before the reporter pointed out that he didn’t need permission to record in a public space.

After several minutes the younger man eventually returned the phone.

That attack was awful but it was still just another atrocity in a conflict that has been running in its current form for around 70 years. There are no good guys in this. The IDF responce has been much worse if that or just as bad if thats possible.

I’m happy with how our politicians have handled it thus far ( and I never say that!).

It’s a terrible thing at a horrible time but we should allow the police to do their job and everyone is entitled to be innocent till proven otherwise.

Jewish students and academics are facing discrimination, intimidation, and hostility in our universities.

John Monash, our greatest Australian, attended the University of Melbourne 130 years ago. He served as Vice Chancellor 100 years ago.

Yet, today, the University of Melbourne is one of the worst offenders.

It's a damning reflection on Australian universities that, despite all their rhetoric on diversity and inclusion, these institutions were more enlightened and more welcoming toward Jewish students and academics a century ago than they are today.

The evidence is clear - academics are spreading antisemitic tropes, university leaders are failing to act, and Jewish students are left feeling unsafe.

Vice-Chancellors claim their institutions reflect broader society.

But the reality is far worse:

Australian universities have become incubators of antisemitic thought.

Enough is enough.

That's why we are demanding an independent Judicial Inquiry into antisemitism in Australian universities - one with the power to hold institutions accountable and drive real change.

Every major Jewish organisation in Australia agrees. Yet, despite rising antisemitic violence across our cities, the Government continues to drag its feet. Jewish Australians deserve immediate action, not more empty promises.

The threats to our cohesiveness as Australians are thick and fast.

Australia has a long history of being anti-semitics. It mainly dates back to the 1880s:

During this period, Arthur Calwell, the minister of immigration adopted measures to ensure that Jews would not constitute more than 0.5% of the country's population.[11][26] Calwell also halted all immigration of Jews of Middle Eastern origin.[27] There was a 25% cap on Jewish passengers travelling on Australia-bound ships and planes.[11][28] In the late 1940s, Australian antisemitism continued to involve a strong focus on the prevention of Jewish immigration.[29] In 1959, Sam Goldbloom, a prominent activist and a federal Labor candidate, was specifically targeted in the publication and circulation of antisemitic pamphlets.[30][31] Also in 1959, the World Jewish Congress reported that antisemitic literature produced in Australia had turned up in Turkey.[32] In January 1960, a series of antisemitic graffiti was reported in Melbourne including at a Jewish community centre.[33] The incident was condemned by Melbourne's two archbishops.[34] Also in January 1960, antisemitic graffiti in Canberra targeted a Jewish bakery,[35] and other buildings.[36] And later, the Central Synagogue in Sydney was targeted by antisemitic graffiti.[37] And later, antisemitic graffiti appeared in Queanbeyan.[38] By the end of January, Jewish community groups reported that 20 to 30 antisemitic acts had taken place.[39] This period saw similar incidents elsewhere around the world and became known as the Swastika epidemic of 1959–1960.

From 1960, Eric Butler's far-right and antisemitic Australian League of Rights, became a national movement.[40] The organisation promoted The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and other antisemitic libels.[11] The League assisted Holocaust denier David Irving with his visits to Australia. And Veritas, the League's publishing company, published Irving's work in Australia.[41][42] There were also strong antisemitic sentiments from some non-Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe that had settled in Australia.[11] They established Australian branches of the fascist, antisemitic movements such as the Ustaše from Croatia and the Hungarian Arrow Cross.[11]

Former prime minister Bob Hawke, who was deemed a vocal supporter of Israel, was also considered for attack.[47] 1978 saw a Melbourne synagogue defaced with swastikas. The local community reported instituted new security measures to prevent additional incidents.[48] In his 1989 review of early history of antisemitism in Australia (colonial period through the immediate postwar period), Sol Encel, observed that aside from its impact on immigration policy, antisemitism in Australia in this period can be viewed as a relatively minor social problem.[8]

A 1969 survey found that approximately 20 per cent of Jewish refugees to Australia and 30 per cent of non-refugee Australian Jews reported to have experienced antisemitism in the country.[49][50] The most common form of antisemitism reported involved antisemitic insults or threats, and a minority of cases involved economic discrimination, social discrimination, and physical attacks.[50]

In 1982, the Sydney Israeli Consulate and Hakoah Club bombings occurred. In this event, an explosive device was detonated inside a vehicle parked outside a Jewish centre in Bondi, NSW. Initial police investigations led to the arrest of a 31-year-old man who was charged in relation to the Hakoah Club explosion. The case went before the court, however, charges were later withdrawn by the NSW Attorney General.[8][51][52][53][54] Other threats against Jewish community institutions stemming from Arab terrorist groups arose in the late 1980s.[8]

In 1988, a speech by Taj El-Din Hilaly, a prominent Muslim cleric, at the University of Sydney was treated by the Australian Jewish community as a significant attack against Jews. In a lecture to a group of Muslim students at the university, Hilaly made statements that aligned with major antisemitic tropes concerning Jews.[55] Despite the subsequent critical coverage of the incident, Hilaly refused to apologise or retract his comments.[56][9][57] The following year, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry began tracking antisemitic incidents across the country.[58] In November 1989, three synagogues in Melbourne were vandalised with various antisemitic slogans and slurs.[59] In 1995, over 60 graves and headstones in the Jewish section of West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide were desecrated, leading to condemnations from Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin and Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating.[60][61] The late 1980s and 1990s saw a number of significant attacks on Australian synagogues (see § Attacks on synagogues).

Töben was ordered to remove the contents of the Adelaide Institute website from the internet and not to re-publish the content of that website in public elsewhere. He was also ordered to make a statement of apology.[65] In the following years, Töben was unsuccessful in his efforts to appeal the ruling. In 2009, after Töben's website continued to house antisemitic material, Töben was sentenced to prison for three months for contempt of court.[66][67] In 2011, during an open day event at the Lakemba Mosque, a visitor reportedly discovered that copies of the antisemitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion were available for sale at the mosque.[68][69][67] The same year, reports were made of extensive antisemitic literature being housed by the Australian League of Rights.[67]

Attacks on Jews also appeared linked to conflicts overseas, such as the 2014 Israel-Gaza war. Incidents included various acts of violence and harassment of Jews on the street, at universities, the use of newspaper cartoons relying on Jewish stereotypes, and the use of anti-Israel discourse to intimidate Jews.[70]

Australian antisemitism was linked to extremist ideology concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.[71]

A notable case of antisemitism directed at Jewish students involves the allegations raised by Jewish students at Brighton Secondary College. Jewish students alleged that they faced extensive antisemitic bullying and harassment and that the school administration was notified on multiple occasions but took no action.[72][73][74] Victorian MPs David Southwick and James Newbury advocated for an investigation into the school's response. Subsequently, former students filed a lawsuit against the school and alleged that the school principal, Richard Minack, had referred to Jews using derogatory language,[75] and had spoken positively about his father who served in the German army in World War Two.[76] other schools noted for allegations of insufficient administrative response to antisemitism includes Lindfield Learning Village in North Sydney.[77]

Might have been stealing it and selling it. - my old school mate told me about his once gf nurse and the way she would steal morphine and replace it with water.... she liked her drugs, had done before she took up nursing but she sure had 'the con' and could work her way around people.

Not only did Wyld receive generous government grants, but she was also appointed by Creative Australia to sit on various peer assessment panels to decide on which artists should be entitled to further taxpayer funding. Imagine appointing a terrorist sympathiser to act as a de facto custodian of public money? We did say the dysfunction was rife!

But Wyld is not alone. Natalia Figueroa Barroso posted her admiration for Hamas on Instagram; she received $25,880 in March 2023. Another grant of $42,452 was given to Matt Chun and Amy McQuire to produce a children’s book.

Quoting Sinwar on the day he was killed, Chun posted on Instagram: “A minute of living with dignity and pride is better than a thousand years of a miserable life under the boots of the occupation.” This while Anthony Albanese was rightfully calling Sinwar an “enemy of peace-loving people everywhere”.

Chun and his affiliates are entitled to their views, to run their own delusional piece of software. But must they be funded and legitimised from the public purse? Is there not a single piece of hospital equipment that could be purchased instead of paying these people to propound their sick ideology?

Meanwhile, Collette’s leadership fumbles plainly extend beyond the smashed urn of the Venice Biennale and the fallout of the past week. His side hustle involves chairing the board of Music Australia, another grant-funding body that’s umbilically linked to the Creative Australia mothership.

Its seven-member council – each of them paid an annual salary of $25,000 – includes Fred Leone, a self-described Aboriginal cultural leader whose social media underwent a vigorous scrubbing in January following bizarre statements posted about Jews.

“Zionists are stopping artists from performing around Australia,” Leone claimed in one post. “Hands up all the proud zionists in the Australian Music Industry! Wave ya flag instead of hiding behind ya money and power. We are boycotting you! Across the board, you don’t get to thrive here any more.”

Ah, yes, the old trope of the greedy, avaricious Jew. Was Leone really suggesting that Jewish artists won’t get funding traction or a fair hearing while he’s on the council?

No serious chair – although we are talking about Collette – would want to keep a guy like that on their board. A public company director wouldn’t survive the hour if they broadcast such hate or dragged their organisation into disrepute.

But Fred? He’s thriving! Still on the Music Australia council and still being paid – except now he’s keeping his thoughts to himself. “I will no longer be expressing my personal opinions on the matter while acting in a public position,” he said in a statement.

Arts Minister Tony Burke, who appointed Leone to the council, has done nothing to remove Leone from this discredited body.

And Creative Australia’s response? “We have spoken with Fred Leone and as a result he has issued a statement.” With responses as feeble as that, it’s no wonder the whole place is a mess.

Detectives released CCTV vision of a car — a white Kia Stonic SUV — and said they hoped to speak to the driver and passenger captured in the footage, who they believe can assist with inquiries.

The car was first seen travelling on the M5 on-ramp near Kingsgrove Road, about 5.20am on Thursday, January 30.

Detective Superintendent Darren Newman said the male driver was spotted getting out of the car near a school in Maroubra which was defaced with antisemitic graffiti that same day.

"I specifically am requesting members of the public to look at an image that has been circulated today which has been taken from one of our tunnels south of Sydney of a male seated in the passenger seat of that vehicle wearing a jumper with a hood which we are saying is dark blue in colour," he said."

NSW nurse charged over video threatening Israeli patients

A Sydney nurse stood down over a video posted to social media where she claimed she would refuse to treat Israeli patients has been charged by police.

A New South Wales nurse who was stood down from her duties over a video posted to social media where she claimed she would refuse to treat Israeli patients has been charged by police.

Sarah Abu Lebdeh, 26, was arrested on Tuesday night at Sutherland Police Station.

She was charged with three commonwealth offences including threaten violence to group, use carriage service to threaten to kill and use carriage service to menace/harass/offend.

In the filmed conversation, which took place on cam chat app Chatruletka, Ms Lebdeh and fellow Bankstown Hospital worker Ahmad Rashad Nadir allegedly bragged about refusing to treat Israeli patients, killing them, and saying they would go to hell.

The two had been stood down pending investigation.

Mr Nadir has not been charged.

The Condell Park woman was granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, March 19.

Investigation 'not straight forward'

Earlier this month, the NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said there was so far "no evidence" patients had been adversely affected.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed on ABC Radio Sydney police had found no evidence that anyone at the hospital had been harmed but said NSW Health was continuing its own investigation.

She said the investigation was "not straight forward".

"Given the nature of this offending, where we had two people here in NSW and the recording made overseas. It's been a complex investigation given the nature of, we're talking across borders," she said.

"[There] has been a lot of work by investigators and support from overseas jurisdictions to get the statement from the influencer and have it converted to English and have it admissible in court.

"So not straight forward, and that's why we've gone with commonwealth offences, through the advice of the Commonwealth DPP."

This is the 14th arrest under Strike Force Pearl. A total of 76 charges have been laid.

"Students have gathered outside a Western Sydney high school to protest a decision to bar Muslim Vote convener Sheikh Wesam Charkawi from working on the premises.

Granville Boys High School student support officer Sheikh Wesam posted a video on social media criticising Australian politicians for "selective moral outrage" after the emergence of a video showing two Bankstown nurses threatening to harm Israeli patients.

The Western Sydney Imam, who has worked at the school for 13 years, was subsequently instructed by the NSW Department of Education to work from home.

On Wednesday, students chanted "bring him back", "Sheikh Wesam" and "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free".

Sheikh Wesam has taken on the role of convener for the Muslim Vote, a "teal-style" movement endorsing independent candidates for the next federal election with a tougher stance on Israel and strong support for Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Among the students, parents and teachers supporting Sheikh Wesam was the Muslim Vote endorsed candidate for Watson, Ziad Basyouny, who is taking on Labor minister Tony Burke at this year's federal election.

"The people of Western Sydney are feeling the scourge of the double standards. If you say something that the elites or the big parties don't like, you get punished," Dr Basyouny said.

"The students don't like that, they asked people to attend, parents, teachers and community volunteers like me will attend, because of the double standards in dealing with the issues that we're facing currently."

He described the actions against Sheikh Wesam as "a clear slap on the hand to silence someone who has an opinion".

Public school teacher Eppy Najjarine, from Teachers for Palestine, came to support Sheikh Wesam's students.

"There are so many students here because they're outraged at the fact that Sheikh Wesam has been stood down," Ms Najjarine said.

"He's well-known in the community; everyone respects him; he's speaking out against injustice with what's happening in Gaza in Palestine."

Ms Najjarine said she condemned the nurses' comments.

However, Ms Najjarine said she agreed with Sheikh Wesam's social media post saying there was a double standard applied to her community.

"Those statements were wrong, we agree they were wrong, but the hypocrisy is a Muslim woman was attacked in Bankstown, two Muslim women were attacked in Melbourne and we don't see the outrage there. It's hypocrisy," she said.

"We are allowed to have personal political views, we are allowed to speak up against injustice and genocide. They're just trying to silence us. Who are they going to come after next?"

Israel has consistently and strenuously denied allegations it is conducting a genocide in Gaza.

Sheikh Kamel Hamed, the Imam at Rahme Mosque in Guilford addressed the crowds outside the school's front gate saying, "listen to the voice of our youth, they want Sheikh Wesam back".

Shiekh Kamel told the ABC that he did not believe Shiekh Wesam's statement was offensive.

"There was no sign of hate speech, no sign of agreeing with the phrasing of the nurses. All I've seen from Sheikh Wesam is basically fairness," he said.

"The department of education should listen to the students."

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Ossip said the rally outside the school was "troubling" and "outrageous".

"These are incredibly troubling scenes.

"Serious questions need to be asked about how this was allowed to proceed," he said.

A NSW Department of Education spokesperson on Wednesday said "any student who did not follow directions from staff" would face "appropriate disciplinary action".

The spokesperson also said that all NSW Department of Education employees "have been reminded of their duty to uphold the reputation of the department as apolitical and impartial".

The subject of the department's response to Sheikh Wesam's social media post was brought up at the NSW budget estimates hearing on Wednesday afternoon.

In response, NSW Premier Chris Minns said at the hearing: "Disciplinary matters have already been taken in relation to this individual by the department."

I heard this morning, on the wahless - in regard to the bill to repeal the 'hate speech' laws - that prior to these 'laws' being set in motion, the NSW Police advised the State Attorney General that the Judeophobic attacks were the actions of 'organised crime' for its own ends.

In the video, Abu Lebdeh allegedly says of Israeli patients at the hospital: “I won’t treat them, I will kill them.”

In the video, she allegedly says to Veifer: “One day, your time will come, and you will die the most horrible death.”

Nadir adds: “You have no idea how many [Israelis] came to this hospital, and I sent them to Jehannam.”

Jehannam is the Islamic equivalent of the underworld.

At the time, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese slammed the video, labelling it “sickening and shameful”.

The duo were stood down without pay from their roles at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital following the incident.

Their future employment will be determined by an internal investigation set to be finalised imminently, however Health Minister Ryan Park promised last month the nurses would never work for NSW Health again."

Now they’re all shocked. The progressive activists. The influencers. The Greens. The podcasters. All those impeccably right-on people who’ve spent two years making “Zionist” – or “Zio” – the dirtiest word in the Australian vocabulary. Who marched down Oxford Street during the Mardi Gras holding a sign that said “Globalise the Intifada”.

Well, congratulations. The Intifada’s here. Globalised. Mission accomplished.

It arrived on Sunday night, on the first night of Hanukkah. The so-called resistance moment – that noble struggle for liberation we’ve been hearing so much about – manifested as gunmen opening fire on Jewish families celebrating their festival by the sea. Fifteen dead. At least. A 10-year-old girl among them. The motive? Oh, we don’t officially know the motive yet. But of course we know the motive. We’ve watched it incubate in this country since October 7, 2023: anti-Jewish rhetoric in the guise of morally urgent criticism of a war in the Middle East.

Dressed up by the very people now eagerly posting their condolences. Their horror and devastation and disbelief.

But here’s what needs to be said to the people who’ve spent two years treating Israel as a uniquely evil state. Who’ve made “Zionism” synonymous with racism and slavery and every conceivable sin. Who’ve said Zionists should not be platformed, should not have culturally safe spaces, should essentially be drummed out of polite society. Who’ve chanted “from the river to the sea” at rallies, in parliament, and posted it on their Instagram stories with little watermelon emojis:

You built this. You laid the foundations, brick by rhetorical brick, post by viral post, march by march with your inverted red triangles and your signs bearing the words “Zionists are neo-Nazis”.

What exactly did you think “intifada” meant? It means blood. It has always meant blood. And now they’ll be cleaning up the blood on Bondi Beach for weeks.

Take Nasser Mashni, now sending “love, care and solidarity” to the Jewish victims. The same Nasser Mashni who for two years, in his role with the Australian Palestine Advocacy Network, has painted Zionism as “settler colonialism” and “Jewish supremacy”. Who thinks Israel’s destruction would bring about – and I quote – the “liberation of the earth”. Who won’t call Hamas a terrorist group but who, sure, stands in solidarity. Very meaningful.

Or Randa Abdel-Fattah, the author and academic, who’s expressing sadness online at this “horrific act of anti-Semitism”. Who’s on record saying Zionists have “no claim or right to cultural safety”. Who quite literally, the day after the October 7 massacres – the day after families were burned alive in their homes – changed her profile picture to a paraglider in Palestinian colours.

Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi said: “My thoughts are especially with the Jewish community.” The same community whose state is “rogue” and “genocidal”. Abbie Chatfield is “heartbroken” and “sickened” by the “anti semetic (sic)” attack. Despite refusing to “platform Zionists” on her podcast. Despite publicly shaming a man as a “genocide supporter”. Just politics, right? Nothing personal.

Anti-Semitism has always been like this. It never goose-steps into the ball dressed as anti-Semitism. It doesn’t wear a sign. It arrives in the costume of the moment. As nationalism. As anti-capitalism. As social justice. It makes itself sound reasonable, even righteous. It speaks in the gentle language of decolonisation and human rights.

And then people die; that’s how this story goes.

Yes, you can criticise Israel. You can oppose settlements and protest civilian casualties in Gaza. But there’s a difference – and it’s a life-or-death difference now – between protest and incitement. Between holding a government accountable for its conduct in war and demonising an entire people.

Because when people talk about Russia and its war in Ukraine, none of it metastasises into graffiti on Russian restaurants. Into harassment of Russian students. Into boycotts and firebombings. Or bullets on beaches.

But with Israel? With Jews? It always does. Every single time. And the Jewish community kept saying this. We saw it coming. We saw it in Europe and America. We saw it in England.

So spare us the shock. Save the thoughts and prayers. You don’t get to globalise the intifada and then act all surprised when it finally shows up.
