It's beyond a joke that none of the protesters who were arrested when they blockaded the Port of Newcastle, despite being repeatedly warned not to by Police, will not be given a custodial (jail) sentence even if they are found guilty by the Court. It makes NSW Premier Chris Minns look like an ass (and rightly so) when he says on camera the day before that protesters who ignore the exclusion zone will feel the full weight of the law, only to have a Magistrate say a custodial sentence wouldn't be a possibility. He looks like an even bigger ass when he refuses to consider mandatory minimum sentences for this kind of behaviour.

If people want to protest about coal ships, fine. They have every right to protest that if they wish. But they should be doing it from the beach, not on the water where they put their lives and the lives of Police at risk when they have to go and remove them for impeding the path of those giant ships. It's time for these eco-morons to feel real consequences by imposing mandatory minimum sentences for this kind of ludicrous behaviour.

It’s the adrenaline rush that gets them going, that and the adulation of their peers.

Hefty fines are the way to go and if they’re not paid, jail time in lieu , six months down the track when martyrdom won’t come into play.

They don’t have the money to pay and wouldn’t pay anyway. The only answer is to jail them, minimum 18 months.

The graffiti cars in Bondi should be OK and are off life-support, with a final wax and polish. Coal ships are another matter, they look steely but are sensitive to bright colours and chanting. Community service could be used for washing them like elephants  in the river to calm them down.

They like paddling boats?  There were slaves who were chained to the oars of galleys. Whipped to keep them up to speed. The convict system made us what we are today.

Now it's come to light that Clover Moore has had Sydney City Council donate $22,000 worth of ratepayer funds to the protest group that blockaded the Port of Newcastle. I don't know about anyone else, but this is an colossally inappropriate misappropriation of ratepayer funds. I hope the State Government investigates and makes her repay that money out of her own salary. I'd be furious if I were a City of Sydney ratepayer.
