Could this be the worst hurricane in history?

Could Trump's Mar-A-Lago home could be washed out to sea with him in it?

Is this more proof of the End Times?

Milton strengthens further; hurricane and storm surge warnings issued for Florida
From CNN Meteorologist Mary Gilbert

Milton continues to strengthen and is now packing
sustained winds of 180 mph with stronger gusts,

according to the National Hurricane Center. It remains a dangerous Category 5 hurricane.

Milton has strengthened an astounding 90 mph since 1 a.m. CT Monday, officially doubling its strength in under 24 hours.

Hurricane warnings have been issued for parts of Florida with impacts likely to start within 48 hours. Storm surge warnings have also been issued for parts of the coast.

Landfall is expected to occur in Florida Wednesday night, likely somewhere near the Tampa Bay area. Milton is forecast to weaken a bit ahead of landfall, but will grow larger in size and remain a formidable hurricane at landfall and after.

Hurricane Milton intensifies to 'potentially catastrophic' storm

Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified into an extremely dangerous category five storm as it tears its way towards the US state of Florida.

Ferocious winds of up to 180mph (285km/h) have been recorded prompting increasingly stark warnings of potentially catastrophic storm surges along coastal areas.

The storm is expected to hit the heavily populated city of Tampa Bay with full force on Wednesday, authorities warned.

Floridians have been told to prepare for the state's largest evacuation effort in years, with Governor Ron DeSantis warning that time for people to evacuate is quickly running out.

"We have to assume this is going to be a monster," Governor DeSantis said at press conference on Monday afternoon.

Warnings over Hurricane Milton come just 10 days after Hurricane Helene - the deadliest mainland storm since Katrina in 2005 - pummeled the US south-east, killing at least 225 people. Hundreds more are missing.

At least 14 of those deaths were in Florida, where 51 of 67 counties are now under emergency warnings as Milton approaches.

"Unfortunately, some of the Helene victims are in the path of this storm," DeSantis said.

Ken Graham, director of the National Weather Service [NWS], said Milton became a category five hurricane at record-breaking speed - with wind speeds intensifying by 80 knots (148km/h) over 24 hours.

"That's the third highest we have on record," he said.

Speculation - wait and see what happens .

If a cat-5 hits Florida a fortnight after Helene, it will indeed give cause for thought....

Were these wind gusts measured at 10m or from aircraft, interested people want to know?

Wind gusts are not the measurement for hurricanes, it is sustained wind speed.

Hurricane Milton: Forecast wind threat, heavy rain and storm surge

Oct 8, 2024

Milton grew to a Category 5 hurricane Monday morning. By Monday evening, Milton had sustained winds upwards of 180 mph.

The center of the storm is forecast to come ashore Wednesday evening into Thursday in the Tampa Bay region, which has not endured a direct hit by a major hurricane in more than a century.

According to KOMO Meteorologist Shannon O’Donnell, there are three big issues to worry about when it comes to these types of storms: the wind, the rain and the storm surge.

Milton’s forecast wind speeds are forecast to be over 155 mph surrounding the core of the storm moving into Wednesday.

Forecasters warned of a possible 8- to 12-foot storm surge in Tampa Bay.
That's the highest ever predicted for the region and nearly double the levels reached two weeks ago during Helene, said National Hurricane Center spokesperson Maria Torres.

The storm could also bring widespread flooding. Five to 10 inches of rain was forecast for mainland Florida and the Keys, with as much as 15 inches expected in some places.

Florida races to prepare as Hurricane Milton reaches eye-popping strength.

Here's the latest
From CNN staff

Hurricane Milton has reached a jaw-dropping Category 5 strength as it charges toward Florida’s Gulf Coast, triggering frenzied storm preparations and massive evacuations along its projected path.

The storm, now packing 165 mph winds, may decrease in category before it is set to slam into Florida on Wednesday. But its exceptional size means its impacts will be severe and far-reaching, causing widespread power outages and damage to areas still reeling from Hurricane Helene.

Milton, which reached wind speeds of 180 mph, is the strongest storm
to strike anywhere on the planet this year and
has also become one of the 10-strongest hurricanes on record for the Atlantic.

Many local officials are begging residents to evacuate and warning of deadly consequences for those who choose to ignore their orders and stay behind.

Here’s what you need to know:

Evacuations well underway: A mass exodus is occurring along roads on Florida’s west coast as thousands follow mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders ahead of Milton’s arrival. Hospitals and nursing homes in danger’s way are also taking steps to protect or evacuate residents. Up to 600 ambulances in the Tampa Bay region were actively evacuating medical facilities on Monday, according to Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie.

Cities brace for impact: Cities in Milton’s path are working around the clock to prepare for Milton’s impact, including by distributing sandbags and removing hulking piles of debris left behind by Helene. Residents in some areas have stripped grocery store shelves of bread and water, while others are reinforcing their homes and packing their belongings into plastic tubs to mitigate flood damage.

Air travel to be dealt a blow: Several airports have announced suspended operations beginning Tuesday, including Tampa International Airport and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. Major airlines are also preparing for the storm’s impact by issuing travel alerts and informing customers how to change and reschedule their travel if it is affected by Milton.

FEMA makes funding reassurances: Federal officials have assured the public that FEMA has enough money in its pockets to respond to both Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The agency is closely monitoring the balance of its disaster relief fund, which slipped into the red earlier this year before Congress unlocked more funding.

About 7,000 federal personnel mobilized: FEMA staff are among the nearly 7,000 federal workers who have been deployed to respond to Milton. “This is one of the largest mobilizations of federal personnel and partners and resources in recent history,” US Rep. Kathy Castor said.

Helene’s death toll rises: At least 235 people across six states have been reported dead due to Helene, according to CNN’s tally, and the number ticks upward each day.

I'm curious how the "round shape" attracts hurricanes from the Atlantic.

I'm not mocking you. I can see how that's possible. I'd just like you to explain it.

Well yes. Warmer oceans cause stronger hurricanes.

As I understand it, it's mostly about wind. More wind, more tendency to form 'eddies' which grow into cyclones.

On a lighter note, Americans call it a "hurricane" because they can't accept second place and call it an "anti-cyclone."

Another reason why the Gulf of Mexico is especially vulnerable to hurricanes and storm surge is because of its unique U-shaped coastline, which essentially traps a storm system into a populated region, no matter which way it turns, Truchelut said.

"When a hurricane gets into the Gulf of Mexico, it's hard for it not to hit somebody," he said.

Hurricane Ian: Why the Gulf Coast -- especially in Florida -- is so vulnerable to hurricanes, storm surge

Hurricane Ian could bring between 5 and 8 feet of storm surge to Tampa Bay.

The underwater geology of the Gulf of Mexico is what makes the Gulf Coast particularly unguarded against the massive influx of seawater. The shallow waters in the Gulf, combined with the symmetry of its shallow ocean floor, are what allow the storm surge to be pushed even higher onto land, Ryan Truchelut, chief meteorologist at Weather Tiger, a consulting and risk management firm, told ABC News.

The same geography conundrum also applies on a smaller scale to Tampa Bay, which is almost shaped like a cul-de-sac and doesn't have anywhere for the water that's getting pushed around to go, Truchelut said.

The only thing about the round shape of the Gulf of Mexico is that it's semi-enclosed rather shallow water and I suppose that leads to quite warm water. If it was a square patch of shallow water it would probably work the same.

Well OK.

From Australian experience, cyclones lose a lot of power over land. There's poo for them to smash up, and every bit of damage also detracts from the wind power.

Being a beautifully square nation, the only analogy is the Gulf of Carpentaria. East moving cyclones I think sometimes pick up power after passing North Queensland, but it's hard to tell. They're pretty lame after passing over land, and there isn't much to destroy on the West coast of the Gulf.

Cyclone Tracy (Australia's worst storm) came in from the Timor Strait. Nobody was prepared.

Hurricane Milton still a Category 5, outer bands beginning to impact Florida

Hurricane Milton is still a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 160 mph, according to the 5 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The storm is located about 300 miles southwest of Tampa, moving northeast at 14 mph.

“On the forecast track, the center of Milton will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico today, make landfall along the west-central coast of Florida late tonight or early Thursday morning, and move off the east coast of Florida over the western Atlantic Ocean Thursday afternoon,” the NHC said.

The official forecast now calls for Milton to be a Category 4 at landfall with sustained wind speeds near 130 mph.

Quite relevant to damage caused to people and their things.

Not very persuasive when it comes to the course or strength of hurricanes.

These things, whether you call them cyclones, anti-cyclones, or hurricanes, are a force of nature. We should firstly have building codes (which put the monetary cost of saving lives, on people rich and poor) but I think we should also offset those costs with government subsidy. Nobody should go homeless because the cost of a storm-proof house is too high.

There is always a cost for government to pay, if lives are to be saved. And there are lateral solutions, like requiring commercial premises to provide shelter in a storm. Only a coward pleads "my money" when lives are at stake.

What we're covering

• Milton’s impacts have arrived: Storm surge has started on the Florida Gulf Coast as the hurricane’s powerful winds drive ocean water onto normally dry land. Milton has also spawned several tornadoes, and torrential rain and thunderstorms are lashing the coast as the most dangerous parts of the storm move closer.

• Where will Milton hit? Milton will make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast overnight as a major hurricane, and could become one of the most destructive storms on record there. Exactly where it comes ashore could shift before landfall and alter where the most life-threatening storm surge occurs in the Tampa area and along Florida’s Gulf Coast. You can track Milton’s path with CNN’s storm tracker.

• Milton growing in size: Hurricane Milton’s wind field has more than doubled in size since yesterday and it is expected to expand more. This means its disastrous impacts will be felt over a much larger area. Tropical-storm force winds are expected to cover the entire width of the Florida peninsula.

Milton still a Category 2 hurricane as it brings “devastating rains and damaging winds"

About three hours after making landfall, Hurricane Milton is bringing “devastating rains and damaging winds inland over portions of central Florida,” the National Hurricane Center said.

Flash flood emergencies are ongoing in the Tampa Bay area, where rain will continue for a few more hours.

Meanwhile, the heaviest rain and significant winds are also now moving into the Orlando area. Winds have been increasing in the Orlando area over the past few hours and are now gusting at 60 mph.

Milton continues to be a powerful Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 mph,
according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center. The storm is now moving east-northeast at 16 mph and the center is located 75 miles southwest of Orlando.

Several feet of storm surge are lashing southwest Florida, especially south of where Milton’s center made landfall. That includes the cities of Venice, Fort Myers and Naples.

Hmm... not a cat 5, but equivalent to Tracy c.100mph.

Armageddon has been avoided.

Yes only a Cat 2 now - nowhere near as bad as a Cat 5.

Storm surge still to come:

Governor Ron DeSantis said he hoped Tampa Bay, once seen as the potential bull's eye,
could dodge major damage and that the worst of the predicted storm surge
could be avoided thanks to the landfall coming before the high tide.
Forecasters said seawater could still rise as high as 13 feet (4 meters).

The whole system may be weakened but there still can be highly charged supercells within it.

BTW, Australian BOM gave warning about supercells around Queensland-NSW border.

Hurricane Milton could hit $50 billion in losses for those insured, Fitch Ratings estimates

From CNN's Matt Egan

Hurricane Milton’s devastating wind, tornadoes and rain likely caused between $30 billion and $50 billion worth of insured losses, Fitch Ratings said Thursday afternoon.

That would be the most since Hurricane Ian caused $60 billion of insured losses when it took a similar path in 2022, Fitch said.

Importantly, the Fitch estimate does not include uninsured losses, which could also be significant. Last month’s Hurricane Helene likely caused more uninsured losses than insured losses due to historic flooding and a lack of flood insurance in some hard-hit areas.

The fact that Milton followed so quickly after Helene could complicate matters.

Fitch said that ultimate losses will depend on higher demand and limited supply of workers and materials “following multiple large-scale disasters,” noting this can increase insured losses by 20% or more.

Hurricane Milton is projected to lift insured losses above $100 billion in 2024, marking the fifth straight year insurers hit that milestone.

Milton is not likely to hurt the credit ratings of property/casualty insurers and global insurers because they have “very strong capital levels,” Fitch said.

However, Fitch said Florida property insurance specialists “are vulnerable to the extent the major hurricane generates losses in excess of reinsurance limits.”

“The Florida homeowners’ insurance market’s precarious position will weaken further with the destruction generated by Milton,” Fitch said.

Yes, I know but I witnessed the same in north west of Australia during cyclone near Onslow, there were plenty of fish in the desert where month before  were only dead  sheep  who died from lack of water. There also were biggest ants hills I ever saw and plenty of uranium ore.

Yes Tallow but you posted a pic without any text.
I thought wow - hurricane Milton did that.
Only when did a reverse image search  with Tineye did I find that it was
9 years ago in China.
It was misleading.
