"Community leaders have gone public with suspicions the rampant meth trade in northern Australia could be linked to a string of disappearances of young men in outback towns.

Five local men have vanished in strange circumstances in northern Western Australia within the last two years, with their families suspecting foul play.

The ongoing inquiries have shone a spotlight on what's long been a taboo topic in the northern towns: the escalation of violence linked to drug trafficking.

Former police officer Robyn Cottman has been hired by one of the families of the missing men to investigate.

She says she's been shocked by what she's uncovered.

"The drug problem is prolific in these areas, and with it's come a lot of criminal activity: retribution, drug debts, all of that sort of thing," she told the ABC.

"There have been lots of gang names mentioned that are running [the drugs] and using the Indigenous population up there to distribute, especially from Perth to Broome on a regular basis, and sell it to the locals.

"So it's a huge trade and as a seasoned private investigator and ex-police officer, I've been amazed by the drugs and violence in these remote areas."

Her comments are backed up by Aboriginal community leaders such as Keith Lethbridge, who has taken to social media to share his suspicions foul play may be involved.

"Young men are going missing all over the place: you hide this, it's going to keep on going," he says in the video.

"The drug problem that we've got with ice, nyarbies, gunja, it's real, it's happening.

"You want to put a stop to it, you got to have the guts to stand up and talk: go forward and do the right thing."

The men have vanished from locations near Geraldton, Roebourne, Port Hedland, Broome and Fitzroy Crossing within the last 23 months.

There is no suggestion that all of the men were using or dealing drugs, and police have downplayed suspicions the cases may be linked.

However, their proximity to the expanding hard drug markets in towns like Port Hedland and Broome has fuelled speculation there may be a connection to at least some of the cases.

And community leaders are increasingly speaking out.

In mid-September, the families of the men gathered for a rally at Parliament House in Perth, demanding more police resourcing to try to locate them.

Several people called out the suspected links to the illicit drug trade.

Doris Eaton, who is related to missing man Wesley Lockyer, told the crowd they were risking retaliation by doing so.

"We have to find our boys and bring them home, so the families can get some closure," she told the crowd.

"It's all about the drugs: there's a lot of money with royalties and now our own people are doing and selling the drugs.

"This has stirred everything up because we are losing our kids to drugs — we know it's drugs — they can't just go missing.

"We could be next in line because we're speaking out — we have to watch our back and come together."

In the Aboriginal communities of northern WA, injectable drugs such as meth are referred to as "nyarbies".

There's been a documented surge in usage in northern towns in recent years.

Noongar man Mervyn told the crowd the issue had been hushed up for too long.

"A lot of these people aren't missing — it's foul play," he said.

"A lot of our kids are addicted to the drugs, sadly … and a lot of our people are slinging it and flinging it for the bigger people, the gudiya [white people].

"Those people who what's happened to individuals, they need to be crucified and made to tell the truth."

After the rally, family members attended a private meeting with senior WA Police.

Some of the families have been critical of the police response to the disappearances, believing there would be more effort made if they were non-Indigenous men who'd gone missing in a capital city.

It's a claim WA Police have strongly rejected.

"Missing persons, regardless of where they are reported missing, are treated as a priority for WA Police Force.

"In all cases, regardless of who is allocated the investigation, the same standard of investigation is conducted, and in the case of land searches, the same specialist support and resources are made available."

"WA Police remains committed to finding answers for those families and communities."

At the meeting, WA Police committed to having a detective from Major Crime assigned to review the case of Wesley Lockyer in particular.

The 29-year-old disappeared from his home at the Jinparinya community in October 2022, with his family fearing he may have been abducted.

virtually non interest from the police.

Three kids Aboriginal (think it was three) - cold case - killed up north of here around Macksville area - took ages to get a response.  then there was that Aboriginal woman with two blokes on the beach who bled to death after some 'extreme sex' - and nobody wanted to know until a public outcry forced action.

Good start - 76/81 can't be wrong......... and how many of the other 5 - Asians and Whites etc - were killed by the same demographic, perhaps having been foolish enough to enter relationships with some of them?  An Aboriginal woman in the NT is 35 times more likely to be killed in a 'family' situation within that demographic than anyone else (and that is taking the entire demographic into consideration, men, women and children, so the real figure is much worse as regards perpetrators) ........ evidence too hard for you?  Not a far cry to suggest who may be responsible for these 'disappearances' and the drug dealing etc, given the evidence of the mothers and families.

Upon commitment to Northern Ireland the Royal Marines standard for 'marksmanship' was 5/10.... they soon found that was inadequate.
