Israel's air force says it has hit Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, after 12 children and young adults were killed in a rocket attack while playing football in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Israel has blamed the Lebanese militant group for Saturday's attack on the Druze town of Majdal Shams, but Hezbollah has strongly denied any involvement.

Early on Sunday, the IDF said it had conducted air strikes against seven Hezbollah targets "deep inside Lebanese territory". It is unclear whether there were any casualties.

The rising tensions have the potential to trigger an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, whose forces have regularly exchanged fire since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war in October.

A rocket attack on a football ground in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights
killed 12 people including children on Saturday,

Israeli authorities said, blaming Hezbollah and vowing to inflict a heavy price on the Iran-backed Lebanese group.
Hezbollah denied any responsibility for the strike, the deadliest in Israel or Israeli-annexed territory since the start of the conflict in Gaza.
The attack sharply escalated tensions in the hostilities which have been fought in parallel to the Gaza war and has raised fears of a full-blown conflict between the heavily armed adversaries.
The rocket struck a football pitch in the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, territory captured from Syria by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed in a move not recognised by most countries.
"Hezbollah will pay a heavy price, the kind it has thus far not paid," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a phone call with the leader of the Druze community in Israel, according to a statement from his office.
In a written statement, Hezbollah said: "The Islamic Resistance has absolutely nothing to do with the incident, and categorically denies all false allegations in this regard".
Hezbollah had earlier announced several rocket attacks targeting Israeli military positions.
The Israeli ambulance service said 13 more people were wounded by the rocket that hit the soccer pitch which was filled at the time with children and teenagers.
"They were playing soccer, they heard sirens they ran to shelter...it may take them like 15 seconds (to reach the shelter). But they couldn't reach the shelter because the rocket hit the site between the ground and the shelter," said Mourhaf Abu Saleh, a witness.
Footage posted on social media showed the moment the rocket hit. An air raid siren can be heard, followed by a big explosion and images of smoke rising. Reuters was able to independently verify the location with the buildings and road layout that matched the satellite imagery of the area.
Idan Avshalom, a medic with the Magen David Adom ambulance service, said first responders arrived to a scene of great destruction. "There were casualties on the grass and the scene was gruesome," he said.
Netanyahu, already due to head back from the United States to Israel overnight on Saturday, said he would bring his flight forward and convene his security cabinet upon arrival.
The United States, which has been leading diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating the conflict across the Lebanese-Israeli border, condemned it as a horrific attack and said U.S. support for Israel's security was "iron-clad and unwavering against all Iranian backed terrorist groups, including Lebanese Hezbollah".
The United States "will continue to support efforts to end these terrible attacks along the Blue Line, which must be a top priority," the spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said in a statement. The Blue Line refers to the frontier between Lebanon and Israel.
Moscow, which has ties with most of the key players in the Middle East, including Israel, Iran, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, condemned the attacks in the Golan Heights.
"We condemn all terrorist actions undertaken by any entity," Russian TASS state news agency cited Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Sunday.

That conflict has spread to several fronts and risks spilling into a wider regional conflict.
Israel has vowed retaliation against Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Israeli jets hit targets in southern Lebanon during the day on Sunday.
But there were expectations a stronger response could follow the security cabinet meeting convened by Netanyahu in Tel Aviv.
After the meeting ended, Netanyahu's office said the cabinet "authorized the Prime Minister and the Defense Minister to decide on the manner and timing of the response."
The White House on Sunday also blamed Hezbollah for the Majdal Shams strike. "This attack was conducted by Lebanese Hezbollah. It was their rocket, and launched from an area they control," it said in a statement.


ALL-OUT WAR FEARED
Iran's foreign ministry warned Israel on Sunday against what it called any new adventure in Lebanon.
Syria's foreign ministry said it held Israel "fully responsible for this dangerous escalation in the region" and said its accusations against Hezbollah were false.
The conflict has forced tens of thousands of people in both Lebanon and Israel to leave their homes. Israeli strikes have killed some 350 Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon and more than 100 civilians, including medics, children and journalists.
Hezbollah is the most powerful of a network of Iran-backed groups across the Middle East and opened a second front against Israel shortly after Hamas' Oct. 7 assault on Israel.
Druze communities live on both sides of the line between southern Lebanon and northern Israel as well as in the Golan Heights and Syria. While some serve in the Israeli military and identify with Israel, many feel marginalized in Israel and some also reject Israeli citizenship.

The incident has added to concerns that months of cross-border hostilities between Israel and the heavily armed Iran-backed Lebanese militant group could spiral into broader, more destructive war.
Late on Sunday, Israel's security cabinet authorised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant to decide on the "manner and timing" of a response to the rocket strike.
Israel's largest newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, quoted unidentified officials as saying the response would be "limited but significant".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Sunday appeared to threaten to invade Israel in support of the Palestinians, and to put an end to the nearly 10-month-old war Israel is fighting against Hamas in Gaza.

Turkey must be “very strong so that Israel can’t do these things to the Palestinians,” the Turkish leader said of the war. “Just as we entered [Nagorno-]Karabakh, just as we entered Libya, we might do the same to them. There is nothing we can’t do. We must only be strong.”

Washington is racing to avert a full-blown war between Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese movement Hezbollah after the attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan killed 12 youths at the weekend, according to the five people who include Lebanese and Iranian officials plus Middle Eastern and European diplomats.
Israel and the U.S. have blamed Hezbollah for the rocket strike, though the group has denied responsibility.
The focus of the high-speed diplomacy has been to constrain Israel's response by urging it against targeting densely populated Beirut, the southern suburbs of the city that form Hezbollah's heartland, or key infrastructure like airports and bridges, said the sources who requested anonymity to discuss confidential details that haven't been previously reported.
Lebanon's deputy parliament speaker Elias Bou Saab, who said he had been in contact with U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein since Saturday's Golan attack, told Reuters Israel could avert the threat of major escalation by sparing the capital and its environs.
"If they avoid civilians and they avoid Beirut and its suburbs, then their attack could be well calculated," he said.
Israeli officials have said that their country wants to hurt Hezbollah but not drag the region into all-out war. The two Middle Eastern and European diplomats said Israel hadn't made any commitment to avoiding strikes on Beirut, its suburbs or civil infrastructure.

The US response demonstrates that the US believes the missile that struck the Druze in The Golan Heights was an Israeli missile.

Furthermore, video reports of the location of the missile hit do not depict a crater.

An explosion is reported by Lebanese media in the Dahieh suburb of Beirut, a known Hezbollah stronghold.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said an Israeli air raid had targeted the area around Hezbollah’s Shura Council in the Haret Hreik neighbourhood of the capital and at least one person has been killed.

The Israeli military said it conducted “a targeted strike in Beirut on the commander responsible for the murder of the children in Majdal Shams and the killing of numerous additional Israeli civilians”.

BEIRUT/JERUSALEM/MANILA, July 30 (Reuters) - Israel believes its air strike on Beirut killed a senior commander of Lebanese armed group Hezbollah on Tuesday, Israel's public broadcaster said, in retaliation for a cross-border rocket attack that killed 12 youngsters three days ago.
A loud blast was heard and a plume of smoke could be seen rising above Beirut's southern suburbs - a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah - at around 7:40 p.m. (1640 GMT), a Reuters witness said.
Two unidentified sources told Israeli public broadcaster Kan that Israel assessed that "the target of the strike" was killed.
The Israeli military earlier said the target was the Hezbollah militant responsible for a rocket strike on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday that killed 12 youth in a football field in the Druze village of Majdal Shams.
Two security sources in Lebanon earlier named the target as Muhsin Shukr, also known as Fuad Shukr, head of Hezbollah's operations centre. They said he was critically injured in the attack around Hezbollah's Shura Council in the Haret Hreik neighbourhood.
Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad told Reuters that the strike also killed another person and injured 35, three critically.

Iraq condemns Israeli strike on Lebanon

Iraq joined a growing list of countries and groups that have condemned Israel’s strike on Lebanon.

“This attack is considered a blatant violation of international law and conventions,” Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. “Iraq asserts that this aggression poses a serious threat to the stability of the region and warns of its negative repercussions on regional security and peace.”

Iran, Lebanon, the Houthis and Hamas have condemned the attack.
The United Nations also said it is “deeply concerned” by the strike, according to the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

Israeli military declines to comment on death of Hamas political leader

The Israeli military told CNN they “don’t respond to reports in the foreign media,” after Iranian state media reported that
Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran.

In a separate statement, Hamas said Haniyeh was killed in what it said was an Israeli raid on his residence in Tehran after he participated in the inauguration of the Iranian president.

Haniyeh was a longtime senior leader in the group, after first joining Hamas in the late 1980s and climbing the ranks in the following decades.



Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran, according to Hamas and Iranian media, was a longtime political leader of the militant group.

The 62-year-old was born in a refugee camp near Gaza City, and joined Hamas in the late 1980s during the First Intifada, or uprising.

As Hamas grew in power, Haniyeh rose through the ranks – being appointed part of a secret “collective leadership” in 2004, then being named the prime minister of the Palestinian Authority in 2006.

By 2017 he had become chief of the group — and was named a “specially designated global terrorist” by the United States soon after.

Over the years, he participated in peace talks with former US President Jimmy Carter, and met with other world leaders including the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and Chinese diplomat Wang Kejian earlier this year.

In April, Israeli airstrikes killed three of Haniyeh’s sons and four of his grandchildren, according to Hamas.

At the time, Haniyeh – who was based in Qatar – insisted their deaths would not affect ongoing ceasefire and hostage talks.

“Whoever thinks that by targeting my kids during the negotiation talks and before a deal is agreed upon that it will force Hamas to back down on its demands, is delusional,” he said.

It's arguable that Haniyeh is a political leader, not a terrorist.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has released a statement saying its top political leader Ismail Haniyeh has been killed in Iran.

In the statement, the group mourned the death of Haniyeh, and pointed the finger of blame at Israel, saying he was killed in "a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran".

Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard also released a statement saying Haniyeh was "assassinated" but gave no details on how.

The US has deployed 12 warships to the Middle East amid the rise in tensions between Israel and Lebanon, the Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing a source in the defense establishment.

These are not Israeli children.  In fact, they are residents of a conquered land, and not Jewish.   Most of them do not want Israel rule.   Which is why the Israeli ministers got booed when they try to attend the funerals.   Its very complicated.
