The ABC is reporting that many websites are down and it's true.
It's a worldwide problem right now.
Is it a major cyber attack?

All flights from several major US airlines – including Delta, United and American Airlines – were grounded Friday morning due to a communication issue, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The ground stop impacts all flights from the airlines, regardless of their destination, said the FAA.

It’s unclear how long the ground stop will last, though the FAA suggested an update would be available by 5 a.m. ET.

Their grounding comes after a significant Microsoft outage brought Frontier Airlines to a standstill for hours on Thursday – though the ground stop for those airlines has since been lifted.

Earlier Thursday, Frontier said its systems had been impacted by the outage, and offered refunds to inconvenienced passengers.

Short version, looks like an update to CrowdStrike's anti-malware tools is to blame.

When it loads the DLLs for the service, it causes the device to blue screen.

Once it blue screens enough times, it will boot to the recovery console.

For servers, this is bad.

Also not great for workstations but at least there are people in front of them.

If you can boot into safe mode, there are things you can do to disable the CS service from starting, and get back into things as normal.

CS should be pushing an update out soon which will stop further devices from having the problem.

The issue is, any device that already installed the update and is blue screening will probably not stay online long enough to receive the fix, so it's going to need someone physically at the device to login to safe mode, so they'll need local admin access, and rename or delete some files then reboot.

It's a sneakernet fix...

Live report from Bobby on location.

Coles was OK  -
2 self serve machines out of 12 were still working so I got through.
Lucky it wasn't busy or there would have a long queue.

Microsoft says the underlying cause for the global outage has been fixed but impacts continue
From CNN’s Maisie Linford

Microsoft said the “underlying cause” that caused the global outage “has been fixed,”
adding that residual impact is still affecting some services.

“The underlying cause has been fixed, however, residual impact is continuing to
affect some Microsoft 365 apps and services,” Microsoft said in a post on X Friday.

“We’re conducting additional mitigations to provide relief,” the post added.

More on what’s behind this: The outage appears to stem at least partly from a software update issued by firm
CrowdStrike, experts tell CNN.
The CEO of CrowdStrike said that the IT issue causing a global outage
has been identified and that a fix has been deployed.

Being too reliant on card transactions only is asking for trouble.
Cash should always be accepted as legal tender (and not to force us into becoming a cashless society) and the old fashioned advice, such as my daughter has done … put $50 inside the cover of your phone just in case …. Will lessons be learnt by all?

I will go out tomorrow driving to Peninsula and will see what’s happening in the area…

Only admin people -  IT staff are allowed to do that in any company -
one computer at a time - what if there are 2,000 computers?

That's why my night is so buggered.

I've got everyone available heading to sites now, they all know what to do, I'm heading gout now too.

Gonna be a long night...

I bet they don't pay you enough?

Do you get overtime rates?

I don't take a wage, I pay others.

All those who chose to help out tonight will be getting 2.5x for their trouble, plus all travel and food for those who went right from the office without getting to eat first.

It's been an expensive night.

Will let the AMs sort out the billing next week.

Given that IT outages require only a few cash dollars to get by, compared to the tens of thousands of dollars each of us annually transacts electronically, if cash is still king, it's a very small one in a rubber boat.

It's up the the vendor.

If they don't want to accept cash, that's fine.

I can understand why they might not.

For example, cash is a target for robberies.

And, there's the hassle of having to take it to the bank.

I carry $185 (one of each note) in my wallet all the time, but I can't remember the last time I've ever used cash.

Cash in large amounts is dangerous - robbers will kill people to get it.

Exactly.

I can perfectly understand why, for example, a young woman running a small fashion/jewellery shop wouldn't want to accept cash.

If it's just her running the business, with no employees, she wouldn't want to be sitting in the shop alone with a pile of cash.

She'd be an easy target.

It's also why pay packets filled with cash are never given out in large companies.
Armed robbers would turn up on payday and take everyone's envelope
just before they were handed out.
You have to be paid into a bank account - there is no other option.

That actually happened to me.

The office girls at the place I worked were carrying the pay packets to an adjacent building about 50 metres away and a car pulled up and robbed them.

They threw the office girls to the ground and stole all the pay packets.

That was about 40 years ago.

Just been reading about this in today's West Australian.

I was rather amused to see a picture of a "Cash Only" sign in a Liquorland store. And I bet there were many others just like it.

However, the biggest 'crisis' of the day seemed to be the cancellation of 7 Jetstar flights to Bali from Perth Airport and the bogans were not very happy.

For those with typically juvenile analytical depth commenting on physical payment being too prone to theft when compared to Cyber-Payment:

"Cybersecurity Ventures expects global cybercrime costs to grow by 15 percent per year over the next five years, reaching $10.5 trillion USD annually by 2025, up from $3 trillion USD in 2015. This represents the greatest transfer of economic wealth in history, risks the incentives for innovation and investment, is exponentially larger than the damage inflicted from natural disasters in a year, and will be more profitable than the global trade of all major illegal drugs combined."

Imagine War and a lot of these places get bombed and put out of action? So many industries and businesses will fall flat.
When it comes to the 'WEB' - one only has to burn a few silk threads and the whole web collapses.

Yes. You never know? You might have one of those rare slightly made different ones that make a lot more money on the Collectors scene.

Every 100 years or more - there's always a Monetary change to deal with inflations.
The $50 note becomes the new 5cents.  ;)

You will never get rid of a 'physical' presence of Money.
Just like you'll never get rid of the world's first and oldest Market - the 'Black' Market... because the colour of Money (and Mathematics) is 'Black'.  ;)

Someone from the company called her RE: transfer.
She did the right thing to phone the company and asked if the guy worked for them, she was assured he does work for the company.
What happened was this scammer was posing as the rep, had details and the name of the guy at that company. Sadly she lost the money. My friend telling me said it’s not just gullible people that are scammed.

Cyber-crime has grown to undoubtedly sophisticated enough levels to fool even highly alert and capable members of society. In reality they are sophisticated enough now to even fool "experts" in Cyber security itself. There has not been anywhere near enough spent on mitigation against and preparation for, system interference. Just wait until the first really expansive internet sub-sea cable attacks happen. We are not even close to being ready with fail-safe back up systems.
That aside however, I tend to also get drawn towards statements like this: "This represents the greatest transfer of economic wealth in history"
What could that level of monetary empowerment mean for society generally, considering the beneficiary makeup? North Korea for example purportedly earns roughly 50% of it's income from Cyber-crime with an estimated work-force above 10 000 specialising in the field.

A similar issue was reported in 2010 when a defective update from McAfee, known as "DAT" file version 5958, triggered a worldwide shutdown of Windows XP PCs.

George Kurtz, co-founder and CEO of CrowdStrike, who is at the center of this current issue, was also the CTO of McAfee during its notorious 2010 glitch with Windows XP.
This connection further intensifies concerns over the recurring nature of such critical technical failures under his leadership.

Like what?

I'm so old that the first coding I did was in Fortran.
The next was Basic using a desktop back in the late 1970s.
The micro I learnt was the Intel 8085  - at Uni - I passed well -
I still have my SDK8085 development kit from then.
I did many applications and wrote my own assembly language.
I was one of the first people to go on the internet with an 80286 back in the early 90s.
It would take 5 minutes to load the home page of CNN so I didn't bother with it.
I must have done 1000s of firmware upgrades in my life.

My only failing is that I haven't worked with servers except to reboot them -
so I'm not an IT professional.

At Uni—LIAR!

Oh you couldn’t tell Aussie and myself what course you did at “Uni.” If you were telling the truth (part of it) here then you did a standard IT course which does not take 6 years.

I believe the BASIC programming—who didn’t do that back in the day?

Very bad if you had Windows and the 3rd party app from CrowdStrike loaded.   :-[

Windows is highly susceptible to things like that, and viruses.

It's junk.

I'll keep using my Chrome OS, with a smug look on my face (and no viruses).

No operating system you can buy is bullet proof -
there is no redundancy.

The same happened when Optus went down -
they had no redundancy either.
Was Optus using Windows?

Crowdstrike has also taken out Linux servers in the past and it has nothing to do with your fanboi ChromeOS fixation, servers don't run on ChromeOS.

You show the same fanboi fanatacism with IT as you do with politics. Not a good look.

Indeed.

And it just keeps getting worse.

Now that multi-hyphenate billionaire Elon Musk has fully outed himself as a Trump fanboy, it didn't take long for his online echo chamber X-formerly-Twitter to turn into a MAGA-infested enclave.

In a new and beyond-parody move, the social media network has now added unremovable Trump 2024 hashtags on top of the trending list, campaign ads on the Explore tab, and cascading American flags when you click one of the hashtags.

Instead of trying to provide a "digital town square" for all, as Musk promised prior to his acquisition of Twitter in 2022, he's now fully leaned into using the platform to promote his own polarizing worldview.

In short, Musk has given up on impartiality — and the latest move bookends his years-long descent into right-wing nutcase conspiracy theories, racist tendencies, and generalized bigotry, all of which have found a place to flourish on the platform once known as Twitter.

Even though I post "Tweets" or "X's" quite often - especially in the Coronavirus section, I'm glad I don't have an X account... and I plan on NEVER having one. Especially while Elon Musk owns it.

I facebook friended some girl that claimed to be from the same town as I. When I checked her friends list, I noticed that it was almost exclusively males. I unfriended her straight away. I noticed that my computer was struggling to work for a while until I did an antivirus scan. It was just a minor malware problem.

It turned out that the lady was a real person from my town. But, people had hijacked her profile and used it against the locals, to... dox... people.
