Title: Labors offshore wind lunacy Post by Baronvonrort on Jun 19th, 2024 at 5:29pm
Bowen announced offshore wind turbines for Illawarra.
The water depth means these turbines will be on huge floating pontoons moored to ocean floor. These turbines are top heavy with lots of windage from turbine. Anyone who has kept a boat on a mooring will know this is going to be very expensive with lots of ongoing costs. It's a harsh environment they will be lucky to last half as long as onshore turbines. It's a stupid idea much better to put them on Barrenjoey Head in Teal electorate. |

Does it matter that the humpback in the photo you posted is entangled in a lobster pot off the WA coast?
Surely with the ~12,000 offshore wind turbines around the planet, if only the handful proposed by the current government pose such a risk to the whales the rest would be killing them off in droves. It would stand to reason, assuming your claims are accurate, there would be 100's of photos of this happening all over the place, right? You wouldn't need to misrepresent and fake the images, yeah? Right? So why did you? I love it when those who clearly don't give a flying fork about the environment, try to co-opt environmental concerns to attack renewables in favour of using fossil fuels. It's like, oh I see what you did there... |

You should look at "incidental take" figures that the US Government allows offshore windfarms. "Incidental take" sounds so much better than "kills". ::) |

We can have the conversation about energy generation kill counts if you'd like.
Coal and Gas: A study by Benjamin K. Sovacool in 2013 estimated that fossil fuel energy sources, including coal and natural gas, cause about 5.2 fatalities per gigawatt-hour (GWh) of electricity generated, primarily through pollution and habitat destruction. Wind: The same study estimated wind energy causes about 0.27 fatalities per GWh, mostly from bird and bat collisions. |

Sovacool looked at precisely 7 wind farms. All in the US.
"The above studies, while useful and important, nonetheless suffer from three common problems: (1) they rarely compare their results with studies of other wind farms to contextualize their estimates; (2) most do not compare the possible avian deaths from wind electricity with other sources, and when they do, studies typically do not compare them to other energy sources; and (3) none attempted to calculate the number of avian deaths per kWh from energy sources so that more meaningful compar- isons might be made between different forms of electricity supply. 3.1. Variation and small sample size A majority of studies examined focused on individual wind farms but did not attempt to compare results across many wind farms or larger geographic areas. There are some notable exceptions, many of which are cited in this study. Still, in an evaluation of 616 studies on wind electricity and avian mortality examined by the author, more than 510 (or 80% of the sample) focused only on one or two wind farms. The problem with such narrow sampling is that a great deal of variability in the amount of avian death associated with particular wind farms exists, ranging from 0 to almost 40 deaths per turbine per year (see Table 1)." https://grist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/contextualizing-avian-mortality.pdf He complains of small sample size and then uses... a small sample size. ::) |

Care to address the text i posted? Mooring lines for wind turbines are far more substantial than lines for lobster pots. These mooring lines have to be checked and maintained anually since the depth of these turbines is deep it isn't going to be cheap. CSIRO puts the cost with offshore wind nearly 3x higher than onshore, these floating turbines will cost even more. Salt air and water kills electrics they will last half as long if that compared to onshore. Put the Turnines on the coast it will save over 20Km of high voltage power line Servicing will be more difficult perhaps you might remember the theme song to Gilligans Island which sums up labors lunacy and the servicing problems. Do you know the difficulty in maintaing Floating offshore turbines compared to fixed? Quote:

The risk of bushfires offshore should not be taken lightly, you're right... |

Poor Lachrymose. Perhaps you should look instead at the "Incidental Take" of offshore windfarms than relying on offshore bushfires. ;) "It's an offence to injure, take, trade, keep, move, harass, chase, herd, tag, mark or brand a cetacean in the Australian Whale Sanctuary without a research permit." https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/epbc/our-role/what-is-protected#threatened-species-and-ecological-communities https://www.dcceew.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/species-application-form.pdf https://www.agriculture.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/cp2021-0009-supplementary-form-a.pdf So it is not illegal to harass whales and dolphins if you have a research permit. Pile driving, either monopiles or multiple mooring points would seem not to be for "research purposes", but for "commercial purposes". Sonar use to establish best siting would also seem not to be for "research purposes". |
