Title: Dr Michael Mosley Post by Gordon on Jun 8th, 2024 at 8:21pm
I wonder if he had lunch or breakfast before he set out for his walk?

It’s devastating… he looked so healthy and was such an influential health guru … last he was seen on that Greek island walking holding an umbrella. I bet he was on uneven rocky formation while holding a brolly and maybe taking photo with other hand…and lost balance. Hubby says the island looks like a shyt-hole! I said we’ll be going to a Greek island as one of cruise stopovers in a couple months. Let’s wear sensible clothing, sturdy walking shoes and sun hats, but no brolly! People tend to relax much and forget safety with uneven terrain when on holidays. That’s when we need to be more focused. Place feet steady before looking at scenery taking photos. When we went to China and had a day at Great Wall… it was 36 degrees in the midday hot sun and steel hand rails were scorching hot so was careful to take steps as they were all built unevenly and steep! I went half way up and decided to stay put and enjoy scenery from there. I heard how some people push themselves climbing to get to top without realising and have had heart attacks. Not me, not that day, and not there! Hubby went all way up show off, but he had backpack with my water bottle in there. I felt like whacking him! He says he was waiting for me! Oh well I still have good scenic photos from my mid vantage point. Then going down precariously and into souvenir shop for a cold drink! Lesson learnt… keep my water bottle on me no matter what! |

Odd the way he was found in this report …
Local cameraman Antonios was on the boat with the mayor when the body was spotted near Agia Marina beach. He told Sky News the body matched the description of the TV doctor. While watching back footage, Antonios said he “clearly” saw a man “lying down with his hand on his belly”. https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/incidents/not-lose-hope-missing-tv-doctors-wife-speaks/news-story/0f1cf2b76ad94bf3795f2e55b5096919 |

Further about how…
“The mayor said that the body appeared to have fallen down a steep slope, stopping against a fence and lying face-up with a few rocks on top of it. "It is unclear if he had an accident or if he felt unwell," Mr Papakalodoukas told State TV ERT.” In time we will know if he fell as an accident or fell having a medical episode and then fell. But in a foreign place, and had he NOT left his phone back at motel, he may have been found earlier, maybe unconscious/still alive. Lesson is… even on holiday keep your phone on you. |

True. He would have been rescued if he had that phone! I'm wondering why his wife took so long to alert the authorities. She didn't report him missing till 7:30 that night. And especially considering he decided to walk back to their accommodation because he wasn't feeling well. I will really miss his documentaries. They were so entertaining and informative. |

Sort of cardiac symptoms? So he walked on his own? On doctor's advice? |

The best explanation I've read us his type 2 diabetes made him more susceptible to dehydration and blood sugar spikes so he probably collapsed then perished in the extreme heat.
As a doctor, he should have known he was more vulnerable. |

As a type 2 diabetic, my only issue with dehydration is if I go without water for long periods of time after exercising considerably. Mowing the lawn for an hour, you bet I will be under the fan drinking down a bottle of water. But, if I went for a walk and got lost, I would be sure that I could manage through 6 hours without needing a drink of water. A doctor should be able to know how to seek out help or find their way back to where they came. Something is amiss if an adult could not find out where he is when he is close to other people. |

I'm not exactly sure but I think he had to walk 20 minutes and then get a bus. But he didn't get the bus although he was seen standing at the bus stop. I thought he might have been suffering from heatstroke because it was 40C and he wouldn't have been used to those temps. |

'Symptoms of heat stroke include: Confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech'.

It's a very sad story, that's for sure. Tragic loss. I have to say though, I've never heard of the guy. I checked out all of his TV shows/specials on Wiki, and I've never heard of any of them. Was he just popular in the UK? |

Heatstroke is bad news. In the Bradford soccer grandstand fire in UK, a man walked away from the fire and fell over instantly dead.

Gosh no, his programmes were televised in Melbourne for years, his shows were very medically scientific and educational. He was such a lovely down to earth happy person. I enjoyed his shows. If you get a chance to see his shows from past, you will see what he was like and was so well liked. He, being English and from what I’ve read was 40 deg on that Greek island, even if he were still alive/unconscious… having been out in the heat for days/nights… would be perishing for anyone! And wearing dark/black colours isn’t helping the body to stay cool under a hot sun. I thought earlier why wear black and have a black umbrella … then I remembered the English are like us in Melbourne, black fashions are just the thing. When I go interstate to Qld I have to remind myself not to wear Melbourne black too much! |

Post mortem information reveals a clearer idea of how he came to pass away.
Makes me think about what Gordon wrote, wondering if the doctor had breakfast etc that day or if it was a fasting day, hence not too well in searing heat. I think it pays to not just have water with you but a snack for emergency sustenance. I’m sure Bear Grylls would agree. And ALWAYS a mobile phone … don’t leave it back in motel room! Could make a difference between life and death. https://www.news.com.au/world/pcmosley06241/video/818918da3b0fab8150b8185c9db2b363 Also, re: his diabetes as discussions leaned towards…here is a statement about it… 1824A59D-B364-48FF-AD4A-5EC15759B007.jpeg (93 KB | 7

Not sure what you mean. Despite having a current respiratory infection -- actually, it cleared up this morning -- I was out last night in 10°C temperatures walking around a 4km course. Needing to rehydrate at the halfway mark, I drank about 400mL of water. If this was the middle of the day, I would have finished that canister of water in one sitting. But, then again, I am not walking around a Greek island with no apparent knowledge of where I am. Dr Mosley must have had a medical episode and was delirious. After many hours of wandering aimlessly, Mosley would have succumbed to heat exhaustion. He would have died in the next 24 hours after that. |
