Thousands of Aussies have shivered through the coldest morning of the year so far
as a polar air mass which brought freezing winds to the east coast continues to linger.

Thousands of Aussies have shivered through the coldest mornings recorded so far this year as a chilly polar air mass continues to hover above the east coast.

The weather system which sent temperatures plunging across the east has now moved to the NSW Tablelands and the Mackay and North Queensland areas.

Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said many suburbs of Sydney woke Monday morning to temperatures between 7C and 9C in the city.

Overnight, Canberra reached -3C and Hobart recorded only 4C.

Liawenee in Tasmania was the coldest minimum overnight, at -5C in heart of the isle.


Clear and windless skies at Guyra on the Northern Tablelands of NSW created a hoar frost Sunday morning, with the chilly conditions forecast to hang around into Monday.

Orange in NSW was barely one degree warmer overnight than Dubbo, which reached 0°C.

Mr Sharpe said many parts of Queensland had woken up to their coldest morning of 2024, with Mackay recording 9C and just 13C being recorded in Townsville, in the state’s north.

He said parts of the NSW Central Coast should experience showers throughout Monday.

The cold front has cleared to the east with a southerly airstream expected across Victoria during Monday and Tuesday as a high south of the Bight moves slowly east, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts.

"Edge of the tropics"? The tropics are really determined by how much rain we get in the summer. If it is a wet season, we are inside the tropics. Dry summer, we are outside of the tropics. I have been to Mackay and Proserpine in summer -
I found the heat and humidity to be unbearable.
It's hard to imagine 4°C temps where you are - even in winter.

Mowed the lawn this afternoon. 4:30 pm I had the mower going around an afternoon sun that felt like a cool dry evening was approaching. Went upstairs to rehydrate and cool off under the fan. I got up to have a shower. 10 minutes later, it was near dark outside and the cool was apparent, even with my fresh shirt, long pants and thick socks I was wearing.

We can go from a 25°C 2 pm temp to a 9°C 2 am temperature and we have to adjust. Other places well south of the Tropic of Capricorn tend to have cool days and cold mornings.

Three years ago, we had to leave our Toowoomba motel at 7 in the morning. It was 2°C outside as we had breakfast. I had my black tea in my thermos ready to drink during the 8 hour trip back to Rockhampton. The temperature rose sharply by 11 am, when we were half way on the journey. It fell a little as we went through Mount Morgan. Then the temperature was something like 26°C when we were driving through town here at just after 2pm that day.

It was cold in Toowoomba during the day and night, being that the city is at least 600 metres above sea level. But, I am accustomed to warm days and cool nights in Rockhampton. Temperature differentials are common.

11.7 was minimum recorded at my place on the beach in Sydney.

It rarely drops below 10 deg here in winter the water temp in the Pacific ocean keeps it warmer in winter and cooler in summer

We got down to 6 degrees C  this morning in Melbourne.

I had two heaters going, a few citronella tea lights burning in my toilet room, the doors and windows shut as much as possible. And it only got down to 13°C. I had to turn off the heaters, as it was getting a little warm by 4am.

Was down in Canberra when it was as Bobby described recently.  Absolutely loved it.

I have never seen Autumn colours live before.  Just amazing how the trees change their foliage/appearance in the space of a mere few days.

I confess we had the comfort of an air conditioned home with floor heating etc, a very mansion type joint, so I have to concede it might be a tad different in less salubrious accommodations.

The Nicholls/Gungahlin area is very visitor friendly, we enjoyed the Casey Jones Hotel, the Spicy Affair and the Cafe on a corner in Nicholls.  Best curry we have ever had at Spicy Affair.  Best haircut/beard cut I have ever had at Casey Market Town.  A young, (I think) Vietnamese bloke.  Fantastic!  Go there if you are in Canberra.  He did a great job, even using sign language!

That Tudor Hotel, the George Harcourt Inn in Nicholls on a cold night, lovely.

I'll take that over a stinking hot humid Qld Summer any time.

Mind you, watching netball in a 30 knot breeze at Calwell (the other side of the Canberra universe from where we were (yes, my Brother's home) with a chill factor below 0 was a tad challenging a Saturday or so ago but.....I'll take it.  I am a sport nut, especially when there are Family playing.

Yeah - i hate the cold - lived most of my life in QLD so extra shock for me. -5!!! argh. Its been in the minus every morning lately.

Last night was no colder than 5.8°C at 6:30 in the morning. I had 10 long burning tea lights in my bedroom. That did the job to keep the bedroom warm until this morning. I slept in my underwear.

I have just lit up some tea lights in this lounge room. I will light some more for the toilet room, just before I go to bed. Some nights I get up and go to the toilet to find that even when the tea lights have finished burning, the toilet room is still warm.

Last night, I put some boards over the window that does not completely close. But, I usually just close the door to the room. Not using more than one heater anymore. The circuit breaker cut in when I had two heaters going, plus the fry pan and microwave going at the same time.

Are you having another dig at Monk regarding how warm his dog is during the winter?

I think it will get to 5°C this coming morning, given that the weather charts are showing southerly winds coming right up from Tasmania. And Thursday might get very cold. In 3 weeks, I would say that it will be freezing weather in 3 weeks time, unless we get a rain event.

Bobby, my parents' dogs have their jackets put on them before they go out onto the landing where the beds are located. The veranda is shielded by coverings. The dogs also have tents to sleep under so that the cold weather is not that bad.

I would assume that Monk would do similar with Socks.

Wondering why I had not fallen asleep, I suddenly realised that I still had not put the recycling bin (complete with my scotch bottles) out on the curbside for the recycling truck. I got dressed and went outside to take the bins out. 6°C at 6am.

Toxic fumes and Carbon Monoxide. Enjoy.

We have 7°C forecast for the morning. I have lit up 10 tea lights in this loungeroom. I have 5 tea lights burning in the toilet room. These tea lights last about 8 hours burning time. I had a single tea light burning away for a few hours in my bedroom the other morning. It was nice and warm in the bedroom when I got in to sleep.

I have a lantern burning some citronella oil under the house. That lasts about 6 hours. But, at least it keeps the mosquitos away. Other than that, my electric heater is keeping the bedroom warm.

I am not subscribed to the Washington Post and I can access the article. New York does not get too hot during the summer. But it does get the occasional 37°C days. New York City is more north than Melbourne is south. NYC is in "the roaring forties"!

Even though I was being sarcastic, I did not know that there was not some kind of similar pattern of wind for that region. I was saying that NYC is further north than you are south of the Equator. Surely that would account for why it does not get too hot in northern USA states.

New York is 40 degrees North.
It gets the hot Southerly winds from the central parts of the USA
so hot summers can be normal.

The United States has a tropical storm, currently in the Gulf of Mexico. At a guess, I would presume that the winds could sweep up the desert air and get caught in a high pressure system and move east to raise the temperature of eastern states (as seems to be shown currently).

For myself with the cold weather of the other week, when a low is in the Tasman Sea, and a high pressure system is in the middle of Australia, it draws up cold air from the Antarctic... nearly as far away as Monk's place. Rain in the southeast might block the cold airflow. But, a dry airflow going northwards would see freezing temperatures in my suburb.

Well, if you live in the Frankston area, it definitely was as cold there as it was in Rockhampton.

Frankston beach is getting a bit of a gust of wind. So, even if the temperatures are not too low tonight, the wind factor really chills the area.

When I went on my walk through North Rockhampton, the wind factor was irrelevant. I only feel the cold if there is a constant breeze coming from the south.

Bloody hell. Over where Monk lives, it is 4°C at 8pm. It is 12°C where I am right now. That is more than 2°C cooler than this time last night. Perhaps that 8°C in the morning forecast is inaccurate. Might get down to 5°C by morning, if we factor in the cloud moving in. I will have to get my walking in before it gets too late, tonight.

I don't want to get into it now, but there is an issue about temperature regulation regarding weather events that leads to weather extremes at polar opposites of the country. India and parts of North America recently had a heatwave. A week later, we Australians had very cold weather. This is the homeostatic effect of weather regulation for the Earth -- unless there is a better term for it.

We are enjoying pleasant east to southeast winds for the next week. Even with the rain coming on Sunday, the lowest temperatures will be around 12°C.

I almost forgot. I saw negative temperatures in Melbourne observations, some years ago. The temperatures were getting down to -5°C in some suburbs.

Climate change to fuel stronger highs

It took more than half a century to break Australia's air pressure record, but if weather trends continue, the next challenge could occur in a much shorter time span.

Data from the BOM shows both the density and intensity of highs has increased since 1950 around Australia, meaning not only are high pressure systems more frequent, they are also slowly gaining in strength.


The weather station at Sheffield in Tasmania reported a pressure of above 1044.3 hectopascals on Thursday morning.
If confirmed it beats the previous Australian record from 1967.

It is contributing to extreme low overnight temperatures over south-east states and a lengthy stretch of showery days along the eastern seaboard.
What's next?

The Bureau of Meteorology expects sea levels over south-east Australia will drop accordingly.

Unprecedented high atmospheric pressure is currently being observed across south-east Australia, including a preliminary new national record measured in Tasmania this morning.

The weather station at Sheffield reported a pressure of 1,044.6 hectopascals (hPa) at 10:30am, which if confirmed beats the previous Australian record of 1,044.3hPa at Launceston on June 7, 1967.

The potential record is slightly contentious due to changing observation frequencies and techniques between now and 1967.

However, the high looks likely to peak again near 1,044hPa early Saturday, providing another opportunity for a record before the system weakens from Sunday.

The abnormal pressure is having a significant impact on the nation's weather, including extreme low overnight temperatures over south-east states and a lengthy stretch of showery days along the eastern seaboard.

I always knew that it seemed colder in July of every year. Not that the distance is a strong factor in weather events. But a contributing factor about how cold it gets.

Climate change to fuel stronger highs

It took more than half a century to break Australia's air pressure record, but if weather trends continue, the next challenge could occur in a much shorter time span.

Data from the BOM shows both the density and intensity of highs has increased since 1950 around Australia, meaning not only are high pressure systems more frequent, they are also slowly gaining in strength.


The weather station at Sheffield in Tasmania reported a pressure of above 1044.3 hectopascals on Thursday morning.
If confirmed it beats the previous Australian record from 1967.

It is contributing to extreme low overnight temperatures over south-east states and a lengthy stretch of showery days along the eastern seaboard.
What's next?

The Bureau of Meteorology expects sea levels over south-east Australia will drop accordingly.

Unprecedented high atmospheric pressure is currently being observed across south-east Australia, including a preliminary new national record measured in Tasmania this morning.

The weather station at Sheffield reported a pressure of 1,044.6 hectopascals (hPa) at 10:30am, which if confirmed beats the previous Australian record of 1,044.3hPa at Launceston on June 7, 1967.

The potential record is slightly contentious due to changing observation frequencies and techniques between now and 1967.

However, the high looks likely to peak again near 1,044hPa early Saturday, providing another opportunity for a record before the system weakens from Sunday.

The abnormal pressure is having a significant impact on the nation's weather, including extreme low overnight temperatures over south-east states and a lengthy stretch of showery days along the eastern seaboard.

Okay… here’s the explanation….
It was pitch black last night, daughter took photo as best she could hoping to get the flooded driveway.
I decided to match the photo so it was easier to see the differences.

That’s why angled.  :)

Oh and our water pump on top of water tank was under water too… tripped the safety switch. Hubby spent all morning drying the pump and then switching it on … lucky it was still okay.

Hopefully when that Supernova that is due 'now', lights up the sky for a month - things should warm up a bit. :D

The cold snap lingering over Australia's southeast is expected to worsen
in the coming days as an Antarctic blast brings even colder temperatures.

Sky News Australia Weather Meteorologist Rob Sharpe explained that the chilly conditions, driven by a series of low-pressure systems, are set to linger across Tasmania, Victoria, and NSW well into the weekend.

'Friday, Saturday, Sunday all look windy for the southeast, particularly Saturday, and there will be that little bit of wet weather going through at the same time,' Mr Sharpe said.

Meanwhile, a southerly air stream will cause temperatures to drop significantly across large parts of Queensland and the northern regions of the Northern Territory.

For these areas, temperatures are expected to be 4 to 8 degrees lower than the usual July average.

Wild winds, heavy rain, and hail are also expected to hit Western Australia, including Perth.


Melbourne

Residents in Melbourne are in for cold and wet conditions well into the weekend.

Showers are forecast for everyday, with the heaviest falls on Friday before easing to light showers by the start of next week. 

Maximum temperatures will struggle to climb over 15C, with lows of 7C and 8C on the weekend.

Friday and Saturday will also see windy conditions, with gusts of up to 45km/h in the city.


Hobart

Cold and wet conditions are forecast for Hobart as the low-pressure system lingers over the region.

Residents are bracing for a cold 2C on Friday morning, before temperatures rise to 12C during the day.

The mercury will drop to 5C on Saturday and 6C on Sunday, with highs reaching a maximum of 11C and 14C, respectively.

Showers are also forecast to fall from Friday through to mid next week.

Meh! Are you looking for an easy answer/solution?
Maybe opinions matter not, seems both side of argument have interesting inputs, but there’s that third question involved too… we should look at this HAARP thing also.

Yeah, it has been bloody cold up here, too. I walked from the Mater Hospital to my place on the north side of town in 8°C weather at 2 am, last night.

It might be humid up here. But it is going to be cool for much of the time.
