France has sent extra police to try to quell riots in New Caledonia, after an eruption of violence this week in protest against plans to allow more people to take part in local elections.

    Violence continued despite a night-time curfew on Tuesday that banned public gatherings.

    What's next? The French National Assembly adopted the constitutional reform late on Tuesday, but it would still have to pass a second round to become law.

France has sent extra police squadrons to quell riots on the Pacific island of New Caledonia after the French Pacific archipelago was rocked by a night of rioting against a controversial voting reform that has angered pro-independence forces.

Shots were fired at security forces, vehicles torched and shops looted in the rioting — the worst such violence in New Caledonia since deadly unrest in the 1980s.

More than 130 people were arrested, according to the French high commission of the republic in New Caledonia.

The proposed reforms would allow French residents who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years to vote in provincial elections — a move local leaders fear will dilute the vote of pro-independence Indigenous Kanaks.

According to French media, the French National Assembly adopted the constitutional reform late on Tuesday local time, but it would still have to pass a second round to become law.

Kanak journalist Andre Qaeze said the situation remained tense in the capital, Noumea.

"The French government, they are very specialised. They have the means, they have guns, they have the cars."

"This evening, there is a plane which will arrive from Paris with soldiers, they are arriving to help the police forces to try to stop all this violence."

One business group said about 30 shops, factories and other sites in and around the capital Noumea had been set ablaze, while an AFP journalist saw burned-out cars and the smoking remains of tyres and wooden pallets littering the streets.

Firefighters said they had received about 1,500 calls overnight and responded to 200 blazes.

Unrest flares as lawmakers in France support increasing the number of French nationals eligible to cast ballots in the territory’s elections.

Protests against the changes turned violent on Monday night, with shots fired at security forces, vehicles torched and shops looted in the worst unrest the French overseas territory has seen since the 1980s.

In response, authorities deployed a heavy security contingent, imposed a curfew, banned public gatherings and closed the main airport.

No. Kanaks are Melanesians (like Papuans). New Caledonia is part of Melanesia, not Polynesia (or Micronesia).
Kanaks are Coconuts or Fuzzy-wuzzies. Polynesians are Pineapples.
Kanaks have Negroid in them. Polynesians have Mongoloid in them. Kanaks are Black. Polynesians are Yellow.

Indians are Caucasoid. Even the Dravidians.
They have 'wavy' hair follicles.
Mongoloids have 'straight' hair follicles
Negroids have 'curly' hair follicles.
Even a European with very curly or very straight looking hair actually has 'wavy' hair follicles - proven by microscopes.

    Riots have taken hold after the French parliament supported voting reforms for the territory earlier this week.

    A police officer has become the fourth person to die amid the unrest after being shot.

The move came as the French government confirmed an additional 500 members of the French national police and Gendarmerie were being sent there to try and quell the violence.

The last time France imposed such measures on one of its overseas territories was in 1985, also in New Caledonia, the Interior Ministry said.

There are other tribal people around the world that use "Kanak" as their name.

Kanaks of New Caledonia are Melanesian ... they were one of the Pacific Islands peoples Blackbirded into QLD for the Sugar Plantations/Farms as indentured(called slave) labour.

Melanesian like Papuans, Solomon Islanders, people from Vanuatu and Fiji.

You should learn to tell the difference.

After France occupied the territory in 1853, Paris purposefully populated it with French citizens, meaning Kanak communities now make up only 40 percent of the population, while the Caldoches – local people of mostly French descent – make up about 25 percent. The rest of the population is made up of newer French arrivals, people from the French island territory of Wallis and Futuna and from Tahiti, as well as a mix of people from Indonesia, Vietnam and other Asian countries.

This week’s changes would add thousands of these newer French arrivals – at least 40,000 have arrived since 1998 according to official figures – to the country’s electoral list, which Indigenous groups say will undermine their push for self-rule.

Ah, the same old story, the colonizer wants to retain his sovereignty.

I have a feeling that the Kanaks are a lot better off under French rule
than a failed, primitive society as they would have been without them.

I was at the airport there once - that's all.
I wanted to go there one day for a holiday but yes the prices were too expensive for everything:
hotels, food, shopping etc.
