I got tricked by some tomatoes I bought at Woolworths.

They were the best tomatoes I had ever tasted and were expensive at $21.42 per kilo.
I bought a small punnet of them.
They were much larger than a 50 cent piece - not small cherry tomatoes.
The flavor was strong and delightful and the skins were thin
and they were not watery like so many tomatoes I've tried before.
I thought - why not grow some of my own from the seeds?
I saved 5 seeds and a friend of mine grew them for me a year or so later.

Guess what? -
they must have been hybrid tomatoes as they didn't breed true.
They must have been cross pollinated with another variety.
What came out were tiny cherry tomatoes with
thick skins that didn't taste very good.

Only what's known as heirloom tomatoes will give
exactly the same tomatoes from their seeds.
Oh well - I should have known the growers would
protect their special high cost tomatoes from copy cats - LOL

I bought one so that I could grow my own at home.

That hasn't worked out so well   :-/

It's not so easy to copy the top produce we sometimes find.    :)

put foreign tomato pollen onto the flowers.

Try planting a whole tomato; I saw this on a video clip that I stumbled across.
Small pot with growing mix, paint the bottom of the tomato with a growth enhancer [or whatever it’s called] and put the tomato base first into a small depression, just enough to hold it upright water in, then water a little daily,
Roots will grow and a new stem will grow out the top.
Dunno if it really works but I’m going to give it a try.

He's trying to punch WAY above his weight.

MY best advice to him was to keep battling out with the baby cherry tomatoes

That won't make a hybrid tomato breed true.
