Who has raised their own chooks in the “backyard?” Deelish eggs, eh?

Anybody done this on a bit bigger scale than 3 birds?

Has anyone raised meat hens, placed them in the Cone of Death™ and cut their throat? Apparently, plenty boiling water makes plucking the things easy? And the gutting? 

Worthwhile?


(Orchards are great for burying bodies errr the evidence ah haha errr animal remains. Dig a hole near a tree, drop the evidence remains in, cover up the evi, errrrr remains and the trees will find it and, metaphorically, chomp it down happily. Deepish hole so the cadaver detecting dogs rats/smell etc are blocked.

In France there was a cemetery next to an apple orchard and an old grave had to be opened (for whatever reason) and what was in the coffin was a heap of apple tree roots, no corpse or skeleton, apple tree(s) scoffed the lot! The ULTIMATE in recycling!)


What about ducks? Room for a duckpond and a pony and enough room for a couple ducks. Worthwhile? I have never seen a duck egg here in Antarctica Tassie—and duck eggs are divine poached!

Yep, we've raised more than 3 chooks at a time.  Both
for eggs and meat—which is invariably tough to eat.  And
don't even bother trying to eat a rooster, even when
they're dead and cooked ha ha.

We now buy our googs from local, genuine free range farms,
rather than Coles or Woolies so-called "free range" eggs
—which aren't so at all.

Both supermarkets define free range as 10,000 hens
per hectare.  The CSIRO Model Code of Practice, says there
should be a maximum of 1,500 hens per hectare in order
to be "genuine" free range.

You must have killed your meat hens when they were past the ideal age? If they were tough? Or too much exercise?

1Ha = 10,000 square meters

1500 hens/Ha = 1500/10000 = 6.7sqm per bird. More than I can give except at particular times.
